U.S. officials described an intense seven-hour meeting in Rome with Yang Jiechi, Xi\u2019s top foreign affairs aide, appearing to set the framework for Biden\u2019s call. Yang is a Chinese Communist Party Politburo member and director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do have deep concerns about China\u2019s alignment with Russia at this time,\u201d the official told reporters this week.<\/p>\n<p>Beijing has attempted to walk a tightrope as Russian President Vladimir Putin\u2019s war machine attempts to crush its western neighbor. Shortly before the talks, U.S. officials disclosed Russia\u2019s requests, raising the temperature on Beijing.<\/p>\n<p>The senior official declined to comment on the nature of the request, but later reports said it included armed drones. A U.S. official <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/i8LcdVpius\">told<\/a> <i>Bloomberg<\/i> that it came early in the conflict.<\/p>\n<p>A lifeline from Beijing could extend the conflict and also hamper U.S. efforts to isolate and punish Russia for the war. So far, the U.S. has declined to detail publicly the penalties Beijing would face for cooperating with its neighbor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are some serious concerns right now about what role China has been or could play in supporting Russia at this very critical juncture,\u201d <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/biden-administration-tries-to-cut-off-chinese-lifeline-to-russia\">said<\/a> Emily Kilcrease, a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security.<\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s press secretary reiterated the White House\u2019s position in remarks at the White House this week and said it would watch China\u2019s actions \u201cclosely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was conveyed by our national security adviser in this meeting is that should they provide military or other assistance that, of course, violates sanctions or supports the war effort, that there will be significant consequences,\u201d Jen Psaki said.<\/p>\n<p>Sullivan\u2019s talks with Yang were described as \u201cconstructive,\u201d planned originally as a follow-up to the president\u2019s video summit with Xi in November of last year. A readout from the White House says the officials \u201calso underscored the importance of maintaining open lines of communication between the United States and China.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, in a moment of possible tension, Yang reiterated China\u2019s call for \u201call parties\u201d in Ukraine to refrain from attacking civilians, according to a Chinese ministry readout. Further, Beijing was concerned about information that could \u201cdistort\u201d or \u201csmear\u201d its role.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChina is committed to promoting peace talks,\u201d Yang said. \u201cAnd the international community should jointly support the Russia-Ukraine peace talks to achieve substantive results as soon as possible and push the situation to cool down as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Xi has forged close ties with Putin \u2014 a bond that now faces intense scrutiny amid Moscow\u2019s bombardment of Ukrainian cities.
