Taxpayer-funded NPR <a href=\"http:\/\/view.nl.npr.org\/?qs=22d4bf85a85c320fdbaf58ecc1ada89b69c273b668447c793870a4e78166bda1fdad86a87553c1aea814d8820cde92276959de8ba03daa8ee1175aa615825563a607dc9fb9496fd7b441d8f8f939ec63\">claimed there were \u201cred flags\u201d in the\u00a0<em>Post\u2019s\u00a0<\/em>story<\/a>, including unfounded claims from intelligence officials that Russia was involved, and claimed the story could not be \u201cverified\u201d \u2013 despite doing no work to verify it.<\/p>\n<p><em>Politico,\u00a0<\/em>similarly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2020\/10\/19\/hunter-biden-story-russian-disinfo-430276\">published a story<\/a> with claims from \u201cintelligence officials\u201d calling the story \u201cRussian disinfo,\u201d without doing any independent work to verify the material in the laptop, which was widely available to news publications.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>NewsGuard followed along with this narrative. In an interview with CNBC at the time, NewsGuard co-founder Steven Brill said \u201cMy personal opinion is there\u2019s a high likelihood this story is a hoax, maybe even a hoax perpetrated by the Russians again.\u201d<\/p>\n[embedded content]\n<p>NewsGuard has a track record of giving negative ratings to conservative-leaning publications, while giving a positive \u201cgreen\u201d rating to establishment media outlets with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2021\/09\/08\/newsguard-gives-green-rating-to-repeated-hoax-publisher-rolling-stone-red-to-critics\/\">track record of publishing hoaxes, like\u00a0<em>Rolling Stone.<\/em><\/a>\u00a0Newsguard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/01\/27\/teachers-union-left-wing-news-rating-system-push-censorship-tool\/\">recently partnered with a major teacher\u2019s union<\/a> to teach kids how to spot \u201cmisinformation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In comments to Breitbart News, Newsguard general manager Matt Skibinski defended Brill\u2019s comments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSteve Brill argued that big tech platforms\u2019 censorship of the <em>New York Post<\/em> story about Hunter Biden\u2019s laptop was misguided, and that social media platforms should not have prevented the story from being posted or shared. He said, \u2018It doesn\u2019t matter what I think \u2014 what matters is that people ought to be able to read [the story] and decide, and they can decide by reading and comparing what the New York Post says to what lots of other media institutions say.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cOur process for rating sites is based entirely on our nine criteria and an evidence-based assessment after a thorough review of a site,\u201d continued Skibinski.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe laptop story had no bearing on NewsGuard\u2019s assessment of the <em>New York Post<\/em>, which has a Green rating from NewsGuard, because there was no evidence the story was false.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Skibinski did not address the fact that the\u00a0<em>New York Times\u00a0<\/em>took two years to admit the veracity of a major news story that it ignored, nor the widespread efforts to discredit the story, nor the failure of establishment media organizations to independently verify the material.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Skibinski said news organizations would be negatively rated according to a much narrower standard, directly claiming that the story was false.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf any website claimed the laptop had been proven not to be Hunter Biden\u2019s and failed to correct that, this lapse would be taken into account in our ratings,\u201d said Skibinski.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur ratings do not mean that a site with a poor rating will never get a story right, or that a site with a strong rating will never get a story wrong. We assess the general practices of each site by evaluating how well it adheres to nine journalistic criteria. If any news website falsely claimed that the laptop had been proven not to be Hunter Biden\u2019s, we would take that into account in their assessment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Skibinski also noted that, with diligent searching, NewsGuard users could even find criticism of the\u00a0<em>New York Times\u00a0<\/em>on its platform.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn our detailed \u2018Nutrition Label\u2019 for each news source we rate, we provide an in-depth description of the site\u2019s content and our rationale for the rating. In some cases, a site may have had high-profile mistakes or controversies related to its reporting, and we want readers to know about those kinds of things so that they can judge for themselves, so we include them in our written explanation of the rating. For example, in our rating of the New York Times, we mention several instances in which the site was criticized or admitted that it had failed to meet its usual standards\u2013such as its retraction of its \u2018Caliphate\u2019 podcast in 2018, the controversy over the 1619 Project, and even the Jayson Blair scandal from 2003.
