The move comes as many begin to worry about the safety of children in Facebook\u2019s new \u201cMetaverse.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<div id=\"attachment_18507186\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/media.breitbart.com\/media\/2021\/10\/facebook-meta-name-change-mark-zuckerberg.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mark Zuckerberg introduces Meta (Facebook)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Facebook (now known as Meta) has previously stated that its Quest headset is designed for those aged 13 and older, but younger children have regularly been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/02\/07\/facebook-metaverse-horizon-worlds-kids-safety\/\">reported<\/a> to be using VR apps. Many younger users are using VR apps designed for older users, including Meta\u2019s own Horizon Worlds, which has raised concerns about children being exposed to inappropriate content.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook now says that from April onwards, parents will be able to ban their children from certain apps. In May, the company announced that it will automatically block teenage users from downloading apps rated too old for them.<\/p>\n<p>Parents will now have access to a dashboard where they can see which VR app their children have downloaded, track how much time they spend in VR, view a list of their child\u2019s friends, and get alerts when they make purchases.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Facebook is also developing a \u201cFamily Center\u201d hub that will bring together parental supervision tools and educational resources across all of its apps, including Instagram. However, Mark Zuckerberg has made big claims on its plans to protect children across its platform in the past and failed to deliver.<\/p>\n<p>Breitbart News previously reported that at a Senate hearing in December 2021,\u00a0Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri revealed that the company is still considering developing an \u201cInstagram for Kids\u201d app despite reports on the platform\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2021\/10\/01\/report-instagram-continues-to-promote-eating-disorders-and-diet-pills-to-teens\/\">negative effect on teens\u2019 mental health<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2021\/09\/27\/facebook-stops-development-of-instagram-for-kids\/\">previous promises to halt the development of such an app.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2021\/09\/14\/wsj-facebooks-internal-documents-show-company-knows-instagram-is-terrible-for-teen-girls\/\">a report\u00a0titled \u201cFacebook Knows Instagram Is Toxic for Teen Girls, Company Documents Show,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0<em>WSJ<\/em>\u00a0claimed that Facebook was aware that Instagram can have a negative effect on the body image of young women.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>WSJ\u00a0<\/em>wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThirty-two percent of teen girls said that when they felt bad about their bodies, Instagram made them feel worse,\u201d the researchers said in a March 2020 slide presentation posted to Facebook\u2019s internal message board, reviewed by The Wall Street Journal. \u201cComparisons on Instagram can change how young women view and describe themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe make body image issues worse for one in three teen girls,\u201d said one slide from 2019, summarizing research about teen girls who experience the issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTeens blame Instagram for increases in the rate of anxiety and depression,\u201d said another slide. \u201cThis reaction was unprompted and consistent across all groups.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Recent\u00a0<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.sanity.io\/files\/k97a60yb\/production\/579f4d97875580eb08d4c28fe1d123f79d224226.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">research by the activist group SumOfUs<\/a>\u00a0showed that Instagram still displays posts promoting eating disorders, diet pills, and skin whitening products to teenagers.
