Mayor Muriel Bowser calling on her to provide them with a plan on how she will address the rampant violent crime in the nation\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Caller first obtained the letter spearheaded by Ranking Member Rep. James Comer and signed by all Republicans on the committee. In the letter, the Republicans criticize Bowser and D.C. Democrats for cutting the budget for the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), saying it has resulted in fewer resources which has led to more crime.<\/p>\n<p>Congress\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/statehood.dc.gov\/page\/congressional-intervention#:~:text=Under%20the%20District%20Clause%20of,or%20even%20overturn%20such%20legislation.&#038;text=Challenged%20DC&#039;s%20efforts%20to%20control%20gun%20violence.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">can exercise authority over DC local affairs<\/a>, according to the District Clause of the Constitution (Article 1, Section 8, Clause 17), and Congress reviews all D.C. legislation before it can become law. Congress can change or even overturn D.C. legislation and can impose new laws on the district.<\/p>\n<p>There has been a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/07\/20\/dc-mayor-muriel-bowser-police-overtime-violence-guns-crime\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">surge<\/a>\u00a0in violent crime in D.C. throughout 2021. MPD data shows the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mpdc.dc.gov\/page\/district-crime-data-glance\">number of homicides<\/a> increased 14% in 2021 and has remained constant this year, the Washingtonian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonian.com\/2021\/07\/19\/whats-really-happening-with-crime-rates-in-dc-right-now\/\">reported<\/a>. Carjackings have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2022\/jan\/20\/carjacking-spike-dc-area-mirrors-violent-nationwid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tripled<\/a>\u00a0since 2019. City vaccine and mask mandates are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/02\/01\/the-big-board-dc-rand-paul-thomas-massie-vaccine-mandate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hurting small businesses<\/a>\u00a0and killing jobs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cD.C. Democrats\u2019 efforts to defund the police have led to out-of-control crime in our nation\u2019s capital. From armed carjackings to innocent families victimized by random attacks, every day we hear of more horrific crimes committed in the District,\u201d Comer told the Daily Caller.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOversight Committee Republicans are calling on Mayor Bowser once again to provide us with her plan to address rampant crime. D.C.
