Version: 4.0.47--><div><\/div>\n<div id=\"speechkit-wrapper\" class=\"speechkit-wrapper\">\n<p><span class=\"label-bg\">NEW<\/span>You can now listen to Fox News articles!\n  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"speakable\">An estimated 6.5 million Americans ages 65 and older are living with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/nervous-system-health\/alzheimers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alzheimer&#8217;s disease<\/a>, according to a new report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">In an annual update released by the Alzheimer&#8217;s Association, the group wrote that 73% of those individuals are age 75 or older and about one in nine of those age 65 and older has Alzheimer&#8217;s.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Almost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alz.org\/alzheimers-dementia\/facts-figures\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">two-thirds<\/a> of Americans with Alzheimer&#8217;s are women, and older Black Americans are about twice as likely to have Alzheimer&#8217;s or other types of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/mental-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dementia<\/a> than older White Americans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/deaths-alzheimers-increased-29-percent-first-year-covid-pandemic-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>DEATHS AMONG ALZHEIMER&#8217;S PATIENTS INCREASED BY 26% DURING FIRST YEAR OF COVID-19 PANDEMIC: STUDY<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In addition, older Hispanic Americans are about one and one-half times as likely to have Alzheimer&#8217;s or other forms of dementia as older White Americans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One in three seniors dies with Alzheimer&#8217;s or another dementia and the association noted the disease kills more than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined.<\/p>\n<p>Alzheimer&#8217;s deaths have more than doubled between 2000 and 2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At age 70, seniors with Alzheimer&#8217;s are twice as likely to die before age 80 than those without the disease.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While people age 65 and older survive an average of four to eight years after a diagnosis of Alzheimer\u2019s, some live as long as 20 years with the disease.<\/p>\n<p>Around the world, 50 million people are living with Alzheimer&#8217;s and other types of dementia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>By the year 2050, the number of people age 65 and older with Alzheimer\u2019s may grow to a projected 12.7 million.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/alzheimers-disease-nasa-vaccine-tested-boston-hospital\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>ALZHEIMER&#8217;S DISEASE PREVENTATIVE NASAL VACCINE TO BE TESTED AT BOSTON HOSPITAL<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nearly half of the caregivers who provide help to older adults do so for someone with Alzheimer&#8217;s or another dementia and 70% of the total lifetime cost of caring for someone with dementia is borne by families.<\/p>\n<p>Alzheimer&#8217;s disease \u2013 a degenerative brain disease that involves the parts of the brain that control thought, memory and language \u2013 is the most common type of dementia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as many as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/aging\/aginginfo\/alzheimers.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">5.8 million<\/a> Americans were living with Alzheimer&#8217;s disease in 2020.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The agency explained that the number of people living with the disease doubles every year beyond age 65. Younger people may get Alzheimer&#8217;s disease, but it is less common.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms of Alzheimer&#8217;s can first appear after age 60 and warning signs include memory loss, mood changes, decreased or poor judgment, difficulty completing familiar tasks, trouble handling money or bills, and misplacing things.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scientists<\/a> do not yet fully understand what causes Alzheimer\u2019s disease, though age is the best-known risk factor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The CDC notes that researchers believe genetics may play a role in developing Alzheimer\u2019s disease and are studying whether education, diet and environment play a role in its development.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/apps-products\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The disease is treated by helping maintain brain health, managing behavioral symptoms and slowing or delaying symptoms.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There is currently no known cure for Alzheimer&#8217;s disease.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
