For a small stretch in Michigan\u2019s Straits of Mackinac, which connects two of the Great Lakes, the pipeline separates into two pipelines, which sit at the bottom of the water.<\/p>\n<p>Nessel contended that if Line 5 were shut down, \u201cWe know that the impact on gas prices in the state of Michigan would be incredibly minimal.\u201d Nessel added that \u201cthe thing that would affect gas prices,\u201d which are currently at record <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/economy\/2022\/03\/11\/gas-prices-soar-record-high-fifth-consecutive-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">highs<\/a>, is a rupture in the pipeline that results in what she said would be a multibillion-dollar cleanup response.<\/p>\n<p>Nessel and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enr.com\/articles\/53646-enbridge-to-issue-rfps-for-500m-straits-of-mackinac-oil-gas-tunnel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sued<\/a> to shut down\u00a0Line 5 in 2020, but Enbridge, the company that owns the pipeline, has fought back with its own legal arguments, according to the <em>Engineering News-Record<\/em>. The magazine detailed that Enbridge has proposed a solution to create a tunnel for the Straits of Mackinac portion of Line 5 to remove the threat of oil spillage into the Great Lakes.<\/p>\n<p>Nessel\u2019s comments come after President Joe Biden began his presidency by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/presidential-actions\/2021\/01\/27\/executive-order-on-tackling-the-climate-crisis-at-home-and-abroad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">declaring<\/a>\u00a0in no uncertain terms a \u201cclimate crisis,\u201d halting new oil and natural gas leases on public lands and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/presidential-actions\/2021\/01\/20\/executive-order-protecting-public-health-and-environment-and-restoring-science-to-tackle-climate-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revoking<\/a> a critical permit for the Keystone XL pipeline project. Environmentalists applauded the pipeline project death blow at the time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrdc.org\/stories\/what-keystone-pipeline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claiming<\/a> the pipeline would have moved \u201cdirty energy\u201d from Canada to the U.S. The same groups have continued to push for Line 5 to see a similar fate.<\/p>\n<p>Nessel echoed to the local Democrat club the same messaging as the Biden administration as she advocated for ending Line 5, saying, \u201cThe Trudeau administration has been very vocal about wanting to make sure that that they can provide as much, you know, dirty oil to Canadian citizens as possible, because that\u2019s who Line 5 benefits, not us here in Michigan.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>She added, \u201cIt benefits the Canadians.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19166578\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/media.breitbart.com\/media\/2021\/12\/wi\/ap\/16\/michigan-pipeline-an-ground-of-enbridge-at-mackinaw-city-mich-pump-station-is-photographed.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">An above-ground section of Enbridge\u2019s Line 5 at the Mackinaw City, MI, pump station is photographed in October 2016. (AP Photo\/John Flesher, File)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Enbridge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enbridge.com\/projects-and-infrastructure\/public-awareness\/line-5-michigan\/about-line-5#:~:text=They%20start%20underground%20onshore%2C%20taper,the%20Straits%20for%204.5%20miles.&#038;text=The%20products%20moved%20on%20Line,of%20Michigan&#039;s%20statewide%20propane%20needs.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">counters<\/a>, however, that \u201cLine 5\u00a0supplies 65% of propane demand in the Upper Peninsula, and 55% of Michigan\u2019s statewide propane needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In terms of costs, one study, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/news\/local\/michigan\/2022\/03\/06\/why-line-5-s-closure-would-cost-up-2-2-b-year-more-gas-diesel\/9377981002\/?gnt-cfr=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conducted<\/a> by the Consumer Energy Alliance, found that \u201coverall, the [Line 5] closure could increase regional fuel prices by 9.5% to 11.7%, if the fallout from prior disruptions to refineries due to natural disasters is any indication,\u201d according to the <em>Detroit News<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The outlet noted the National Wildlife Federation disputed that study, claiming, \u201cit was not grounded in fact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brendan Williams, president of the fuel supplier PBF Energy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/05\/14\/colonial-steroids-refinery-reveals-economic-catastrophe-gretchen-whitmer-kills-michigan-pipeline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> Breitbart News last May that closing the pipeline \u201cwould be devastating for the region\u201d and noted that the amount of crude oil moving through Line 5 is \u201cthe equivalent of 40 percent of the crude capacity of regional refiners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The White House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/11\/08\/white-house-confirms-biden-effort-to-shut-down-another-major-pipeline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0in November that a study was underway to explore the impacts of shutting down Line 5.<\/p>\n<p><em>Write to Ashley Oliver at <a href=\"mailto:aoliver@breitbart.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">aoliver@breitbart.com<\/a>.
