Ro Khanna, an advocate of aggressive climate policies, acknowledged Wednesday that the U.S. must increase domestic oil production in the \u201cshort term.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Khanna, the chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee\u2019s environment panel, added that an increase in oil production shouldn\u2019t cut against the nation\u2019s long-term climate goals, Bloomberg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgov.com\/core\/news_articles\/R8HUGST0G1KX\">reported<\/a>. President Joe Biden has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/04\/22\/fact-sheet-president-biden-sets-2030-greenhouse-gas-pollution-reduction-target-aimed-at-creating-good-paying-union-jobs-and-securing-u-s-leadership-on-clean-energy-technologies\/\">pledged<\/a> that the U.S. will have a completely carbon-free power grid by 2035 and that the country will produce net-zero emissions by 2050 while Democratic lawmakers, including Khanna, have <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/14\/democrats-progressive-caucus-joe-biden-climate-change\/\">pushed even more aggressive actions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the short term, yes, we need domestic increase in oil production,\u201d Khanna told Bloomberg on Wednesday. \u201cAnd that obviously, is going to not be consistent in the very short term with climate aspirations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I think over the long term, we can still have our climate goals,\u201d he continued. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/16\/saudi-arabia-uae-boris-johnson-energy-oil-joe-biden\/\">(RELATED: Saudi Arabia, UAE Welcome UK Prime Minister For Oil Talks After Reportedly Shunning Biden)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s ongoing military assault of Ukraine has caused uncertainty in global energy markets, leading to higher <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/02\/24\/crude-oil-prices-100-per-barrel-russia-ukraine\/\">oil<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/07\/gasoline-prices-all-time-high-russia-white-house\/\">gasoline prices<\/a> around the world. (Joe Raedle\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In the weeks following Russia\u2019s invasion, Khanna has <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/02\/25\/democrats-congress-strategic-petroleum-reserve-joe-biden\/\">asked<\/a> Biden to tap the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepRoKhanna\/status\/1500249005716082688\">argued<\/a> the crisis proves the need for a swift national transition to renewable power and <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/14\/democrats-progressive-caucus-joe-biden-climate-change\/\">joined<\/a> a Democratic letter to the White House urging rapid movement of a proposal to boost climate spending by $555 billion. But the California lawmaker has stopped short of directly calling for more oil production.<\/p>\n<p>In October, Khanna <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/27\/democrats-ro-khanna-carolyn-maloney-oversight-committee-big-oil-disinformation\/\">initiated<\/a> an investigation into Big Oil\u2019s alleged decades-long \u201cdisinformation\u201d campaign covering up the harmful impacts of carbon emissions. During the initial hearing, during which CEOs of the largest fossil fuel companies testified, Khanna suggested the industry should decrease production.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet me just ask a \u2018yes\u2019 or \u2018no\u2019 question on this, Mr. Wirth. Are you embarrassed as an American company that your production is going up while the European counterparts are going down?\u201d Khanna <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.house.gov\/meetings\/GO\/GO00\/20211028\/114185\/HHRG-117-GO00-Transcript-20211028.pdf#page=34\">asked<\/a>\u00a0Chevron CEO Michael Wirth during the hearing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOK. You are not embarrassed,\u201d he continued after Wirth responded that global energy demand was increasing. \u201cI am just asking an open question. It is not a \u2018gotcha\u2019 question. Do you commit to do anything to matching your European counterparts to try to bring the actual demand of oil production down?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A follow-up hearing was <a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/news\/press-releases\/chairs-maloney-khanna-demand-big-oil-board-members-testify-at-march-hearing\">slated<\/a> for March 8, but was <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/04\/democrats-oversight-committee-fossil-fuel-industry-hearing-climate-change\/\">abruptly canceled<\/a> without warning amid the Ukraine crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Khanna\u2019s office didn\u2019t immediately respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
