According to one report, Romney defended his stance by arguing that elected representatives should, essentially, cede the decision making on matters of public health over to the government medical establishment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Romney may think it prudent to blindly follow the so-called experts, but he could use a lesson from one of President Ronald Reagan\u2019s favorite authors and thinkers, George Gilder.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In April of 2020, Gilder stood practically alone as a prominent thinker arguing that it was the politician\u2019s job not simply to allow health bureaucrats like Dr. Anthony Fauci dictate COVID-19 policy, but that a politician must discern all available information and continue to craft government policy for the greater good with the input of those experts, not necessarily at the direction of those experts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That message was true then as it is now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On Tuesday evening, The Daily Wire<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/senate-votes-to-repeal-mask-mandate-for-planes-public-transportation\"><span>reported<\/span><\/a><span> that after the senate passed the resolution 57-40, with eight Democrats joining the GOP, the lead sponsor of the bill, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), proclaimed, \u201cthe Senate said enough is enough, and sent a message to unelected government bureaucrats to stop the anti-science, nanny state requirement of travel mask mandates.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In April 2020, Gilder was remarkably prescient in an opinion column for The Wall Street Journal, writing, \u201cWe\u2019re told in this plague year that politicians have no role\u2014in essence, that the people have no real rights against consensus science, which can demand that we forfeit our liberties and suspend the Constitution.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cPolitical leaders, elected to exercise judgment on our behalf, must defer to doctors, because the viral threat is addressable only through medical expertise,\u201d the best-selling author of \u201cWealth &#038; Poverty\u201d said at the time, explaining much of D.C.\u2019s view of COVID-19 at that point.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>If we are to believe CNN\u2019s Ali Zaslav, that is almost a word-for-word defense of what Romney had to say Tuesday night after siding with the Democrats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cA GOP aide in Romney\u2019s office says he voted against Sen. Rand Paul\u2019s measure to repeal travel mask mandates because, as he has been vocal about in the past, he believes it\u2019s important for public health officials to make these types of decisions, not politicians,\u201d Zaslav tweeted:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A GOP aide in Romney&#8217;s office says he voted against Sen. Rand Paul\u2019s measure to repeal travel mask mandates because, as he has been vocal about in the past, he believes it\u2019s important for public health officials to make these types of decisions, not politicians<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ali Zaslav (@alizaslav) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/alizaslav\/status\/1503903753220591625?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 16, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>But, to that line of thinking, Gilder offered another area where politicians do not simply hand over complete control to the \u201cexperts\u201d \u2014 the United States Military. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>His comparison in the Journal showed how misguided Romney\u2019s course of action in other government affairs would be: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><i>Yet since many liken fighting the coronavirus to war, we should remember that in war admirals and generals defer to civilian authority\u2014to the president, as commander in chief, on matters of strategy and to Congress on matters of budget.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>This is not a design flaw but how a free people governs itself, even in a perilous crisis. It is how we bring the largest possible perspective to decision-making.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Gilder went on to say that our leaders needed to consider the greater risk of the economy, and whether or not the prevailing precautions like lockdowns would harm society as a whole in unprecedented ways. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He argued they would, and some people may say he was correct. <\/span><span>There are certainly<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/new-york-times-admits-america-sacrificed-childrens-well-being-for-sake-of-adults-safety-in-the-name-of-covid-19\"><span>numerous examples<\/span><\/a><span> of rising drug overdoses, failing childhood literacy, abuse,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ama-assn.org\/system\/files\/issue-brief-increases-in-opioid-related-overdose.pdf\"><span>and more<\/span><\/a> <span>to lend credit to his argument. Others would probably disagree and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/02\/24\/bill-gates-australia-covid-blueprint-could-help-prevent-next-pandemic.html\">point to arguments<\/a> from folks like Bill Gates to make their case.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But Gilder actually took it beyond the debate of the immediate crisis of the pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>The<\/span>\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.profmex.org\/cronicasinfin\/noticias\/The_Man_Who_Predicted_the_iPhone_Technology.pdf\"><span>man who predicted the iPhone<\/span><\/a>\u201c<span> foresaw that the government\u2019s reaction to COVID-19 \u2014 and large swaths of the American people\u2019s willingness to go along with it \u2014 was only the latest sign of a deeper problem with how Americans view the role of science and the role of government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThere are not, and never will be, scientific answers to all public problems,\u201d Gilder<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/we-need-politicians-in-a-pandemic-11586710824\"> <span>warned<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cScientific expertise and specialization inform good policy, but they should never be the final word.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cTo navigate successfully between competing interests or competing calamities, between war and peace, and even between deadly pandemics and deadly economic depressions, we need politics\u2014and politicians,\u201d Gilder opined.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>\u201cWe are beset by more than a virus; we are beset by bad ideas about what government can and should do, and about who should be making crucial decisions,\u201d the man credited with bolstering Reagan\u2019s belief in supply-side economics concluded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Of course, one may expect the Democratic Party to throw their unquestioning trust behind government and \u201cthe science.\u201d That has been their MO for quite sometime. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But it is a little appalling that Romney \u2014 who once <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/mitt-romney-reframes-himself-as-a-severely-conservative-governor\/2012\/02\/14\/gIQAaMiqHR_story.html\">tried selling himself<\/a> to voters as \u201ca severely conservative\u201d politician \u2014 would follow their suit, even after two years of seeing how that method of government has affected American society. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Gilder\u2019s full opinion column, titled, \u201c<\/span>We Need Politicians in a Pandemic,\u201d can be read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/we-need-politicians-in-a-pandemic-11586710824\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><i><span>The views expressed in this piece are the author\u2019s own and do not necessarily represent those of The Daily Wire.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
