Version: 4.0.47--><p>As experts warn of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodmorningamerica.com\/wellness\/story\/organization-15-million-donation-mackenzie-scott-working-change-82879780\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:growing mental health crisis among kids\" class=\"link\">growing mental health crisis among kids<\/a> due to the coronavirus pandemic, new data shows the mental health struggles kids faced even prior to the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Between 2016 and 2020, the number of children ages 3 to 17 who were diagnosed with anxiety grew by 29% and those with depression by 27%, according to a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) study <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamapediatrics\/fullarticle\/2789946?guestAccessKey=41fde697-e79f-411c-bed3-743faeb63055&#038;utm_source=For_The_Media&#038;utm_medium=referral&#038;utm_campaign=ftm_links&#038;utm_content=tfl&#038;utm_term=031422\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:published Monday in JAMA Pediatrics, a medical journal\" class=\"link\">published Monday in JAMA Pediatrics, a medical journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>From 2019 to 2020, researchers found a 21% increase in children with behavior or conduct problems, according to the study.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur research highlights a critical need to support both children and their caregivers to improve families\u2019 mental and emotional well-being,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrsa.gov\/about\/organization\/bureaus\/mchb\/mwarren.html#:~:text=Michael%20Warren%20is%20the%20Associate,America&#039;s%20mothers%2C%20children%20and%20families.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Dr. Michael Warren\" class=\"link\">Dr. Michael Warren<\/a>, a co-author of the study, said in a statement. \u201cThis includes ensuring access to timely health care services and addressing social determinants of health to support children and families\u2019 overall well-being.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The study was conducted using data from the National Survey of Children\u2019s Health (NSCH), which collects data on 36 separate health-related measures, including preventive health checkups, mental health diagnoses, physical activity and caregiver well-being, according to HHS.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caas-figure\">\n<div class=\"caas-figure-with-pb\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"caas-img-container caas-img-loader\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"VIDEO: New study shows spike in kids diagnosed with mental health disorders (ABCNews.com)\" src=\"https:\/\/cndimages.nyc3.digitaloceanspaces.com\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/16075107\/df4551fc3f21c28d7a155ec8f256298e\" class=\"caas-img\" \/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><figcaption class=\"caption-collapse\">VIDEO: New study shows spike in kids diagnosed with mental health disorders (ABCNews.com)<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>In addition to finding an increase in the diagnosis of mental health conditions, the study also found that children&#8217;s physical activity decreased by 18% between 2016 and 2020. In addition, the proportion of kids with unmet health care needs grew by 32%, according to the study.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodmorningamerica.com\/wellness\/story\/organization-15-million-donation-mackenzie-scott-working-change-82879780\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:MORE: Experts warn of youth mental health crisis. Here&#8217;s what one nonprofit is doing about it<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The study comes on the heels of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodmorningamerica.com\/news\/story\/pandemics-impact-youth-mental-health-devastating-surgeon-general-82749265\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:warning last year from the U.S. surgeon general\" class=\"link\"> warning last year from the U.S. surgeon general <\/a> of a growing mental health crisis among young people. Organizations representing child psychiatrists, pediatricians and children\u2019s hospitals also declared a national emergency for youth mental health in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m deeply concerned as a parent and as a doctor that the obstacles this generation of young people face are unprecedented and uniquely hard to navigate and the impact that&#8217;s having on their mental health is devastating,&#8221; U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said in testimony before senators in December.<\/p>\n<p>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported last year that emergency department visits for suicide attempts among teen girls were <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Health\/sharp-uptick-suspected-suicide-attempts-teenage-girls-cdc\/story?id=78225955\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:up more than 50% at the beginning of the pandemic\" class=\"link\">up more than 50% at the beginning of the pandemic<\/a> compared to the same period in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Darien Sutton, a board-certified emergency medicine physician and ABC News medical contributor, said parents should realize that mental health conditions, including anxiety, may look different in kids than adults.<\/p>\n<p>In children, anxiety in particular can manifest with irritability, mood changes, changes to interest in activities, and in physical conditions like stomachaches and headaches, according to Sutton.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodmorningamerica.com\/wellness\/story\/son-died-suicide-mental-health-resources-schools-80950208\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:MORE: Our son died by suicide.
