Raskin maintained that position in her letter and blamed Senate opposition and special interest groups who were \u201cunwilling to acknowledge the economic complications of climate change and the toll it has placed, and will continue to place, on Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Senators\u2019 point of contention, Raskin wrote, \u201cwas my frank public discussion of climate change and the economic costs associated with it. It was \u2014 and is \u2014 my considered view that the perils of climate change must be added to the list of serious risks that the Federal Reserve considers as it works to ensure the stability and resiliency of our economy and financial system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not a novel or radical position,\u201d Raskin contended, arguing that central banks around the world, and even current Biden nominee for Chairman of the Federal Reserve, Jerome Powell, have \u201crecognized climate change as a significant risk that needs to be incorporated into the supervisory process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny vice chair for supervision who ignored these realities \u2014 which are manifesting every day across this country \u2014 would be guilty of gross dereliction of duty,\u201d Raskin wrote. \u201cWe are entering an era of financial economic war, inflation, and climate transition. These risks cannot be dismissed for political reasons, certainly at this moment when the possibilities of mitigating them still exist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/03\/15\/statement-from-president-biden-on-the-withdrawal-of-sarah-bloom-raskins-nomination-to-serve-as-vice-chair-for-supervision-of-the-federal-reserve-board-of-governors\/\">statement<\/a> reacting to the withdrawal, Biden blasted Senate Republicans, claiming they ignored Raskin\u2019s \u201cbroad support\u201d and previous experience at the Fed, in favor of partisan interests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah Bloom Raskin knows better than anyone how important the Federal Reserve is to fighting inflation and continuing a sustainable economic recovery,\u201d Biden wrote. \u201cShe has unparalleled experience pursuing solutions to enhance our country\u2019s critical financial infrastructure, with expertise in cybersecurity and climate risk, and protecting consumers in the financial marketplace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah\u2019s nomination had broad support\u2014from the banking and financial services community, former members of the Board of Governors, multiple Nobel Prize winners, consumer advocates, and respected economists from around the country,\u201d Biden added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite her readiness\u2014and despite having been confirmed by the Senate with broad, bipartisan support twice in the past\u2014Sarah was subject to baseless attacks from industry and conservative interest groups,\u201d he continued. \u201cUnfortunately, Senate Republicans are more focused on amplifying these false claims and protecting special interests than taking important steps toward addressing inflation and lowering costs for the American people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biden then called on Republicans to swiftly vote to confirm the other nominees to the nation\u2019s central bank.<\/p>\n<p>Despite Biden\u2019s gripes with Senate Republicans\u2019 boycott, it was likely moderate Democratic West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin who sunk Raskin\u2019s confirmation. Manchin does not sit on the Banking Committee but is the swing vote in the evenly-divided Senate. He has recently taken a hard-line stance on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/two-democrat-senators-join-republicans-in-calling-for-u-s-to-increase-domestic-oil-production\">domestic energy production<\/a> and has already held up the nomination of an Interior Department appointee until the Biden administration commits to boosting domestic oil and gas drilling.
