Gavin Newsom (D-CA) is rejecting Republicans\u2019 bid to pause California\u2019s gas tax because the move would help \u201cpetro-dictators and oil companies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Prices at the pump have been rising for the past year, reaching new highs amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\/?state=CA\"><span>AAA<\/span><\/a><span>, the average American consumer currently pays $4.31 per gallon; however, the average Californian pays an average of $5.75.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>California also has a $0.51 per gallon tax on gasoline \u2014 a policy which many Republicans are attempting to suspend in order to provide residents with relief from soaring prices. A Honda Civic, for example, has a 12.4 gallon tank \u2014 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fueleconomy.gov\/feg\/Find.do?action=sbs&#038;id=42152\"><span>translating<\/span><\/a><span> to an additional $6.34 per fill from the tax alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In a letter obtained by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/politics\/republicans-newsom-california-gas-tax-inflation\"><span>Fox Business<\/span><\/a><span>, a group of Republican lawmakers led by Rep. David Valadao (R-CA) asked Newsom to pause the gas tax.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cEven as prices skyrocket, California continues to tax gasoline at 51.1 cents per gallon,\u201d the lawmakers wrote. \u201cWhile market forces are responsible for today\u2019s extreme prices, California\u2019s high taxes represent an added burden, and working Californians simply cannot afford gas prices approaching $6 per gallon.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWith the cost of goods rising across the board and the price of a gallon of gas at record highs, now is the time to pursue all avenues of relief,\u201d the letter continued. \u201cWe call on you to immediately suspend California\u2019s excise tax on gasoline for six months.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy was among the legislators who sponsored the letter, according to Fox Business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The letter is not the only bid from California Republicans to suspend the gas tax. Assemblyman Kevin Kiley (R-CA) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abc7.com\/california-politics-gas-tax-democrats\/11651692\/\"><span>introduced<\/span><\/a><span> a bill that would have paused the tax for half a year \u2014 but a party line vote in Sacramento killed the measure on Monday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe are offering the legislature the chance to be on the side of hard-working Californians by suspending the state gas tax in its entirety,\u201d Kiley said at a news conference ahead of the vote. Other lawmakers \u2014 including Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher \u2014 pointed out that California\u2019s $65 billion budget surplus could easily \u201cbackfill\u201d the $4 billion in funds raised through the tax.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Newsom\u2019s office reacted poorly to the conservatives\u2019 legislation. Newsom Communications Director Erin Mellon argued that \u201cthe Republican\u2019s proposal can be manipulated to help line the pockets of petro-dictators and oil companies who are benefiting from the spike in oil prices across the world,\u201d instead pointing to Newsom\u2019s \u201ctax rebate to provide billions in direct relief to Californians who are suffering from rising gas prices across the country\u201d as a \u201cdirect result\u201d of the Russian invasion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cYesterday, the Democratic super majority in California had an opportunity to provide real relief to hardworking California families who are struggling with record breaking gas prices,\u201d Valadao said in a statement to Fox Business. \u201cIt is unfortunate they chose not to put more money back into the pockets of Californians by suspending the gas tax.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
