To do that, NATO fighter jets would engage and shoot down any Russian aircraft they encountered. <\/p>\n<p>As noted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/06\/us\/politics\/no-fly-zone-ukraine-congress.html\">multiple lawmakers<\/a> on both sides of the political aisle, as well as other experts, a no-fly zone in Ukraine would be an act of war against Russia. It would quickly usher in a conflict between multiple countries with access to nuclear weapons. A no-fly zone wouldn\u2019t just mean NATO warplanes shooting down Russian aircraft, it would also throw the door open for Russian warplanes to shoot down American aircraft and take American lives in retaliation. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means starting World War III,\u201d Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rubio.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm\/2022\/3\/icymi-rubio-joins-this-week-with-george-stephanopoulous\">said<\/a>. \u201cPeople need to understand what a no-fly zone means. It\u2019s not some rule you pass that everybody has to oblige by. It\u2019s the willingness to shoot down the aircraft of the Russian Federation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the clear consequences of imposing a no-fly zone, Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., who was <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/02\/08\/the-rncs-censure-of-cheney-kinzinger-is-absolutely-justified\/\">censured<\/a> by the Republican National Committee for buying into the Democrats\u2019 lies about the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and targeting political opponents, is just one of the many proponents of this dangerous idea. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"ujipNyqB3nR56cEgIaFhrWQTZtskD1vPdm0ezOGUwYMoK9lJb24SLVXx8f\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">2) History teaches that taking a stand is inevitable and gets more costly with time. Roger Wicker of Mississippi, a likely candidate to become the next ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, was also quick to call for \u201ca strong coalition of like-minded nations\u201d to \u201cstep in and seriously consider\u201d a no-fly zone. <\/p>\n<p>Some congressmen have yet to fully embrace such a rash strategy but have signaled a willingness to move toward an air campaign against Russia if the Ukraine conflict worsens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo take anything off the table, thinking we might not be able to use things because we\u2019ve already taken it off the table, is wrong,\u201d Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/sunday-talk-shows\/597055-manchin-calls-for-keeping-no-fly-zone-as-one-option-to-help-ukraine\">said<\/a> when asked by NBC\u2019s Chuck Todd if he would support a no-fly zone in Ukraine. <\/p>\n<p>South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, who recently called for the assassination of Russian President Vladimir Putin, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-10608679\/Lindsey-Graham-says-open-no-fly-zone-Ukraine-Putin-uses-chemical-weapons.html\">said<\/a> he would endorse a no-fly zone if Putin turned to chemical weapons to fuel his invasion of Ukraine. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><\/figure>\n<p>Republican Sen. Politico jumped on board by publishing an open letter by 27 foreign policy experts who claimed that the United States and NATO should enact a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/f\/?id=0000017f-6668-ddc5-a17f-f66d48630000&#038;nname=playbook&#038;nid=0000014f-1646-d88f-a1cf-5f46b7bd0000&#038;nrid=0000015d-a357-df20-adff-b3ff37130000&#038;nlid=630318\">\u201climited\u201d no-fly zone<\/a> in order to provide humanitarian aid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we seek is the deployment of American and NATO aircraft not in search of confrontation<br \/>with Russia but to avert and deter Russian bombardment that would result in massive<br \/>loss of Ukrainian lives,\u201d the letter states. <\/p>\n<p>In addition to the propaganda press calling for a no-fly zone, some supporters have turned to psychological operations such as lullabies and manipulated videos to emphasize their desire for taking out Russian warplanes. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><\/figure>\n<p>Whether they believe it or not, these bureaucrats and talking heads claim that the only way to end the conflict is to choose the option that will escalate confrontation with Russia and might well lead to U.S. boots on the ground in a full-scale <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/11\/unlike-past-conflicts-with-russia-escalation-in-ukraine-risks-pulling-the-west-into-war\/\">war<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Seventy-eight prominent professors, experts, and other foreign affairs pundits said as much in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2022\/mar\/11\/we-call-on-biden-to-reject-reckless-demands-for-a-no-fly-zone\">open letter<\/a> last week, which they penned in an effort to communicate just how volatile a no-fly zone would be. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe deplore Russia\u2019s aggression, admire the bravery of Ukrainians, mourn the loss of innocent life, and wish for a speedy end to the conflict. However, it strains credulity to think that a US war with Russia would make the American people safer or more prosperous,\u201d the letter states. \u201cTo the contrary, going to war with Russia, a nuclear peer of the United States, would expose Americans to vast and unnecessary risks. A war that expands beyond Ukraine\u2019s borders could also inflict damage across Europe and weaken America\u2019s Nato allies. We call upon the administration to avoid such a gambit and continue to use appropriate diplomatic means and economic pressure to end the conflict.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The type of escalation required by a no-fly zone in the Russia-Ukraine conflict is not only unnecessary, but it\u2019s also unpopular with the American people. While <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/07\/corrupt-media-pollsters-are-using-dishonest-tactics-to-drag-america-into-war\/\">propaganda press pollsters<\/a> drum up support for a no-fly zone, which they promote as the best way to \u201cprotect Ukraine from Russian air strikes,\u201d most Americans <a href=\"https:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/what-would-it-take-for-americans-to-support-war-against-russia\/\">still do not want to go to war with Russia<\/a> over Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>In that, Americans have demonstrated better sense than our talking heads and neocon politicians, who are willing to go to war with Russia under the guise of imposing a no-fly zone.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Jordan Boyd is a staff writer at The Federalist and co-producer of The Federalist Radio Hour.
