And often despite their own challenges. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Some of the women may be familiar names. Others may be new to you. Each has an inspiring and powerful story.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Of Levine, USA TODAY noted, \u201cLevine, 64, a trained pediatrician,\u00a0became the nation\u2019s highest-ranking openly transgender official last\u00a0March when the Senate confirmed her as assistant secretary of health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Levine told USA TODAY, \u201cI really feel that everything I\u2019ve ever done, whether it was in academic medicine, in education, in clinical research, seeing my patients in my role in public health, in Pennsylvania and now my role nationally\u2026has all led to this moment in terms of helping the nation through this greatest public health crisis that we have faced in over a hundred years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeyond the pandemic, Levine said she is concerned about the challenges women and girls face related to body image,\u201d USA TODAY wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Levine told the outlet, \u201cWe need to be welcoming and celebratory for women of all aspects, of all sizes and shapes. And we have to work towards that compassion for all women and not put such an emphasis on thinness and appearance. I think that we need to work as a culture in the United States, but also globally, to be more compassionate and more accepting of girls and women, no matter what their size and shape,\u201d adding, \u201cWomen are absolutely critical in terms of promoting healthy behaviors for themselves and their families and our communities\u2026I think women are often the creators of change. In terms of the changes that we see in our society and our culture, I think that women are those change-makers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In October 2021, Twitter locked the account of Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN) after he called Rachel Levine a \u201cman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/dailywire.com\/news\/gop-lawmaker-locked-out-of-twitter-after-calling-transgender-biden-official-rachel-levine-a-man\/\">reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Banks\u2019 Twitter account was locked sometime after he referred to Levine as a \u201cman\u201d in an October 18 tweet. \u201cTwitter has censored @RepJimBanks for calling HHS\u2019 Rachel Levine a man. He will be locked out of his account until he deletes the tweet, \u2018The title of first female four-star officer gets taken by a man,\u2019\u201d Daily Signal reporter Mary Margaret Olohan tweeted on Saturday.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">NEW: Twitter has censored <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepJimBanks?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@RepJimBanks<\/a> for calling HHS&#8217; Rachel Levine a man. He will be locked out of his account until he deletes the tweet, &#8220;The title of first female four-star officer gets taken by a man.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/6wdDqJ36kH\">pic.twitter.com\/6wdDqJ36kH<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Mary Margaret Olohan (@MaryMargOlohan) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MaryMargOlohan\/status\/1451885448868007936?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 23, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe tweet in question appeared to have been removed from Banks\u2019 account by Sunday afternoon,\u201d The Daily Wire noted.<\/p>\n<p>At Levine\u2019s confirmation hearing in February 2021, Levine dodged questions from Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) \u00a0regarding Levine\u2019s support for giving children puberty blockers and sex-change surgeries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGenital mutilation has been nearly universally condemned,\u201d Paul stated. \u201cAccording to the WHO, genital mutilation is recognized internationally as a violation of human rights. Genital mutilation is considered particularly egregious because, as the WHO notes, it is nearly always carried out on minors and is a violation of the rights of children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Levine, you have supported both allowing minors to be given hormone blockers to prevent them from going through puberty, as well as surgical destruction of a minor\u2019s genitalia,\u201d Paul continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, senator, thank you for your interest in this question,\u201d Levine said. \u201cTransgender medicine is a very complex and nuanced field with robust research and standards of care that have been developed. And if\u00a0I am fortunate enough to be confirmed as the assistant secretary of health, I will look forward to working with you and your office and coming to your office and discussing the particulars of the standards of care for transgender medicine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paul replied, \u201cLet\u2019s be a little more specific since you evaded the question.
