The rate was 20 per 100,000 in 2019.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/lifestyle\/baby-born-2-22-22-at-222-am-room-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>BABY BORN 2\/22\/22 AT 2:22 AM IN ROOM 2: &#8216;BLESSING FOR HER FAMILY&#8217;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Among Black people, there were <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/coronavirus-pandemic-science-health-health-statistics-00f3a7a2ecf362d06d6b3131a2bf5cf2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">55 maternal deaths per 100,000 births<\/a> \u2014 almost triple the rate for whites.<\/p>\n<p>The report from the National Center for Health Statistics does not include reasons for the trend and researchers said they have not fully examined how COVID-19, which increases risks for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">severe illness<\/a> in pregnancy, might have contributed.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image-ct inline\">\n<div class=\"m\"><source media=\"(max-width: 767px)\" \/><source media=\"(min-width: 767px)\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/a57.foxnews.com\/static.foxnews.com\/foxnews.com\/content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/640\/320\/Pregnant-Woman-Doctor.jpg?ve=1&#038;tl=1\" alt=\"A pregnant woman visits the gynecologist\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"caption\">\n<p>\n      A pregnant woman visits the gynecologist<br \/>\n      <span class=\"copyright\">(iStock)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The coronavirus could have had an indirect effect. Many people put off medical care early in the pandemic for fear of catching the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/science\/wild-nature\/viruses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">virus<\/a>, and virus surges strained the health care system, which could have an impact on pregnancy-related deaths, said Eugene Declercq, a professor and maternal death researcher at Boston University School of Public Health.<\/p>\n<p>He called the high rates &#8220;terrible news&#8221; and noted that the U.S. has continually fared worse in maternal mortality than many other developed countries.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/mothers-vaccinated-against-covid-during-pregnancy-reduce-risk-infants-hospitalized-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>MOTHERS VACCINATED AGAINST COVID DURING PREGNANCY MAY REDUCE RISK OF INFANTS BEING HOSPITALIZED WITH COVID-19<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Pregnancy-related deaths per 100,000 births climbed from 44 in 2019 to 55 in 2020 among Black people and from 13 to 18 among Hispanics. The 2020 rate among whites, 19 per 100,000 births, was essentially unchanged.<\/p>\n<p>Reasons for those disparities are not included in the data. But experts have blamed many factors including differences in rates of underlying health conditions, poor access to quality health care and structural racism.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is incredibly sad news and especially scary for Black women,&#8221; said Dr. Laura Riley, OB-GYN chief at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Janelle Bolden, an assistant OB-GYN professor at Northwestern University\u2019s Feinberg School of Medicine, said the report is not surprising.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The pandemic has uncovered the disparities in access to care, healthcare quality and delivery. It has also laid bare the lack of support for public health and social agencies that many people rely on for basic needs,\u2033 Bolden said. &#8220;These disparities and inadequacies lead to poor care and worse outcomes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/apps-products\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The U.S. maternal mortality rate has more than tripled in 35 years. A decade ago, it was 16 deaths per 100,000 births. It has climbed along with rising rates of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/nutrition-and-fitness\/obesity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">obesity<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/heart-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">heart disease<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/medical-research\/surgery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cesarean sections<\/a>, which all increase risks for people giving birth.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
