Taiwan\u2019s Ministry of National Defense confirmed its air force issued \u201cradio warnings\u201d to the Chinese aircraft in an attempt to \u201cdrive [them] away\u201d from Taiwan\u2019s ADIZ. The Taiwanese air force additionally deployed \u201cair defense missile systems\u201d as a precaution.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/air_traffic\/publications\/atpubs\/pcg_html\/glossary-a.html#$AIR%20DEFENSE%20IDENTIFICATION%20ZONE\">defines<\/a> an ADIZ as \u201can area of airspace over land or water in which the ready identification, location, and control of all aircraft\u2026 is required in the interest of national security.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>China\u2019s\u00a0PLAAF regularly orders air sorties to penetrate Taiwan\u2019s ADIZ in an effort to intimidate Taiwan militarily. Beijing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news.cn\/english\/2021-11\/20\/c_1310322772.htm\">considers<\/a> Taiwan \u2014 an independent island nation located off China\u2019s southeastern coast \u2014 to be a province of China and has repeatedly <a href=\"https:\/\/news.cgtn.com\/news\/2021-10-09\/China-s-complete-reunification-will-be-and-can-be-realized--14dMFwf8iIw\/index.html\">vowed<\/a> to \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.xinhuanet.com\/english\/20211231\/d10c11b68a5648808904687945a0bea3\/c.html\">reunify<\/a>\u201d the island with China.<\/p>\n<p>The number of Chinese aircraft involved in the PLAAF\u2019s March 14 intrusion into Taiwan\u2019s ADIZ \u201cwas well off the last large-scale incursion, 39 Chinese aircraft on Jan. 23, and since then, such fly-bys have been sporadic with far fewer aircraft,\u201d Reuters observed.<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s military ordered a Shaanxi Y-8 electronic intelligence plane to fly through Taiwan\u2019s ADIZ on March 10.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne People\u2019s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) Shaanxi Y-8 electronic intelligence plane flew into the southwest corner of Taiwan\u2019s ADIZ,\u201d Taiwan News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taiwannews.com.tw\/en\/news\/4469400\">reported<\/a> on March 11, noting the incident marked the sixth such intrusion into Taiwan\u2019s ADIZ that month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo far this month, 17 Chinese military aircraft have been tracked in Taiwan\u2019s identification zone, including nine fighter jets, six spotter planes, and two helicopters,\u201d the online newspaper observed at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Beijing ordered a record-high number of air incursions into Taiwan\u2019s ADIZ last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChinese planes were tracked in Taiwan\u2019s identification zone 22 times in April, 18 times in March, 17 times in February, and 27 times in January,\u201d Taiwan News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taiwannews.com.tw\/en\/news\/4202348\">recalled<\/a> on May 13, 2021. The publication noted the actions while reporting on the Chinese PLAAF\u2019s seventh penetration of Taiwan\u2019s ADIZ within that month alone.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese military ordered an additional air sortie into Taiwan\u2019s ADIZ less than 30 days later, on September 5, 2021.
