They say the children in the movie are overtly disobedient and rude, plus there are sexual themes including the main character twerking as a panda in front of her mother while taunting her, plus multiple instances of the girl rebelling against her \u201coverbearing\u201d Chinese-Canadian mother to the point of being disrespectful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The film is touted as a \u201ccoming-of-age sensation where the supernatural and the mundane happily walk hand in hand,\u201d at least according to one <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/moviefreak.com\/turning-red-2022-movie-review\/\"><span>critic<\/span><\/a><span>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Rotten Tomatoes synopsis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/turning_red\">says<\/a>, \u201cIn \u2018Turning Red,\u2019 Mei Lee is a confident, dorky thirteen-year-old torn between staying her mother\u2019s dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence. And as if changes to her interests, relationships, and body weren\u2019t enough, whenever she gets too excited (which for a teenager is practically ALWAYS), she \u2018poofs\u2019 into a giant red panda!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It\u2019s true that the movie is rated PG and is intended for slightly older audiences compared to other Pixar films, especially since it deals with the subject matter of puberty specifically. However, even considering the target demographic, some parents and reviewers are insisting this project goes a few steps too far and what\u2019s worse, that it lacks the charm inherent to so many other Disney\/Pixar projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonsensemedia.org\/movie-reviews\/turning-red\/user-reviews\/adult\"><span>reviewer<\/span><\/a><span> on Common Sense Media, \u201cThe movie contains repeated storylines and scenes of the kids lying to their parents and sneaking out of the house. All of this is portrayed as cool and ok because the main character\u2019s mom is portrayed as overbearing, way too protective, and \u2018psycho.\u2019 \u2026 the 13 year old main character talks about how honoring your parents is great, but that sometimes honoring them \u2018too much\u2019 means you aren\u2019t honoring yourself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Even the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/movies-and-tv\/2022\/3\/9\/22967167\/turning-red-review-disney-pixar-movie-billie-eilish-finnian\"><span>reviewer<\/span><\/a><span> from the Chicago Sun Times was less than enthused. \u201cIf you\u2019re a parent watching \u2018Turning Red\u2019 with kids who aren\u2019t yet at the age where they should be learning about puberty, fair warning: You\u2019re going to be answering a LOT of questions after this movie,\u201d Richard Roeper wrote.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He went on to describe the scene when the main character, Mei Lee, first turns into a panda. Her mother mistakes her shock on the other side of the bedroom door as her teen getting her period for the first time, prompting her mom to exclaim, \u201cDid the red peony bloom? I have pads \u2026 regular, overnight, scented, unscented, thin, ultra-thin, ultra-thin with wings. \u2026 You are a woman now, and your body is starting to change. \u2026 You are now a beautiful, strong flower who must protect her delicate petals and clean them regularly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This scene makes the film squeamish for parents of little ones but possibly instructive for older kids. However, that wasn\u2019t the only issue Roeper had with the movie.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe problems are mostly with the script, which often requires Meilin to be almost irritatingly obnoxious,\u201d he wrote. \u201cMeanwhile, her mother behaves like a monster for much of the story, which takes on an increasingly supernatural element to the point where there\u2019s a \u201cGhostbusters\u201d homage.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Roeper also mentions the much-maligned moment when Meilin\u2019s mom, Ming, tries to stop her daughter from turning into a panda and receives the reply, \u201cMy panda, my choice, Mom.\u201d The reviewer said, \u201cit sticks out like a tweet more than an organic moment of expression.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This line was also another point of contention for conservatives who see this movie as just more propaganda from Disney.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Still, plenty of reviewers loved \u201cTurning Red,\u201d claiming it was quirky and weird yet captured an essential truth about coming of age. The Guardian\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2022\/mar\/13\/turning-red-review-pixar-fizzing-journey-through-female-adolescence\">reviewer<\/a> called it, \u201ca fizzing, squealing adolescent explosion of a movie that nails a fundamental truth about growing up. Puberty may be something that pretty much everyone has to endure, but at the time it feels like a uniquely mortifying and personal experience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe message is one of female friendship, embracing change and cuddling your inner panda, of working through mother-daughter friction,\u201d the reviewer continues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cTurning Red\u201d is currently streaming on Disney+.
