Version: 4.0.47--><div><\/div>\n<p class=\"subheading\">(AFP) \u2013 Germany on Monday unveiled plans to buy dozens of US-made F-35 fighter jets, as part of a multi-billion-euro push to modernise its armed forces in response to Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Berlin intends to buy 35 F-35 jets made by Lockheed Martin to replace Germany\u2019s decades-old Tornado fleet, as well as purchasing an additional 15 Eurofighter jets.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Defence Minister Christine Lambrecht called the purchase agreement \u201ca good step forwards\u201d for Germany\u2019s Bundeswehr armed forces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere can only be one answer to Putin\u2019s aggression, and that is unity in NATO and credible deterrence,\u201d Lieutenant General Ingo Gerhartz, commander of the German Air Force, told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>Germany\u2019s Tornados are the only Luftwaffe planes certified to carry US nuclear bombs stationed in Germany that are a key part of NATO deterrence.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Lockheed\u2019s fifth-generation F-35 stealth jets are considered the most modern combat aircraft in the world, and their unique shape and coating make them harder to detect by enemy radar.<\/p>\n<p>The additional Eurofighter jets Germany plans to purchase, made by a consortium that includes Airbus, would be used for other operations, including electronic warfare like jamming enemy air defence systems.<\/p>\n<p>In a landmark speech late last month, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz pledged to invest an extra 100 billion euros ($112 billion) to bring the nation\u2019s chronically underfunded Bundeswehr into the modern age.<\/p>\n<p>The spending boost marks a major reversal for Europe\u2019s top economy, upending its policy of keeping a low military profile in part out of guilt over World War II.<\/p>\n<p>After years of criticism that the country wasn\u2019t shouldering enough of the financial burden in the NATO military alliance, Scholz vowed to spend \u201cmore than two percent\u201d of Germany\u2019s gross domestic product annually on defence, surpassing NATO\u2019s own two-percent target.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>The shift was prompted by Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, which shook Germany\u2019s sense of security and shone a harsh spotlight on the state of its armed forces.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Trump Vindicated: Germany to FINALLY Pay NATO Spending Requirements<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/qvavqZm45k\">https:\/\/t.co\/qvavqZm45k<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Breitbart London (@BreitbartLondon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BreitbartLondon\/status\/1498312036178137094?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 28, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The F-35 purchase however raised questions about the future of a common European fighter jet that is being developed with Spain and France.<\/p>\n<p>Known as the Future Combat Air System (FCAS), that plane is slated to replace French-made Rafale jets and German and Spanish Eurofighter planes from 2040.<\/p>\n<p>Scholz sought to allay fears that the project might become unnecessary, saying in February\u2019s speech that the joint European project was an \u201cabsolute priority\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>But the Bundeswehr has to replace its 40-year-old, 93-strong Tornado fleet in the short term because it has become \u201cobsolete\u201d, Scholz added.<\/p>\n<p>Lambrecht on Monday also reiterated Germany\u2019s commitment to FCAS in the long term.<\/p>\n<p>Lawmaker Johannes Arlt from Scholz\u2019s Social Democratic Party (SPD), said the F-35 deal was good news for FCAS in a roundabout way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe F-35 builds a bridge to FCAS.
