President <b>JOE BIDEN<\/b> will announce the move today, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-war-live-updates-381a42b2a97f933ff1e336983c7a8101\">per the AP<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><b><i>IN RUSSIA:<\/i><\/b> As he faces down sanctions that are bruising the Russian economy, President <b>VLADIMIR PUTIN<\/b> on Thursday \u201copened the door to nationalizing the assets of Western companies pulling out of Russia and exhorted senior officials to \u2018act decisively\u2019 to preserve jobs,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/10\/world\/europe\/russia-economy-ukraine.html\">per NYT\u2019s Anton Troianovski<\/a>.<b><i> In response,<\/i><\/b> White House press secretary <b>JEN PSAKI <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PressSec\/status\/1502099530577289220\">warned via Twitter<\/a> that the move \u201cwill ultimately result in even more economic pain for Russia.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><b><i>IN UKRAINE:<\/i><\/b><i> <\/i>\u201cMissile strikes were reported overnight in places far from the Russians\u2019 main advance,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2022\/03\/10\/world\/ukraine-russia-war\">per the NYT<\/a>, including two cities in the country\u2019s western reaches. \u201cRefugees from cities under bombardment have been fleeing to Ukraine\u2019s west believing it was safer,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/live\/world-europe-60685883?ns_mchannel=social&#038;ns_source=twitter&#038;ns_campaign=bbc_live&#038;ns_linkname=622aee7d0ce87e491a0ef053%26Russia%27s%20strikes%20move%20west%2C%20into%20new%20territory%262022-03-11T06%3A43%3A16.195Z&#038;ns_fee=0&#038;pinned_post_locator=urn:asset:9e90c398-065a-4be6-a156-95ec15d1ac5a&#038;pinned_post_asset_id=622aee7d0ce87e491a0ef053&#038;pinned_post_type=share\">notes the BBC<\/a>. As of this morning, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FilippoGrandi\/status\/1502209903062142979\">the U.N. estimates<\/a> that the number of refugees from Ukraine has hit 2.5 million.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>THE NYT\u2019S PROJECT VERITAS QUAGMIRE \u2014 <\/b>At a Thursday lunch in the New York Times Washington bureau, upset reporters pressed executive editor <b>DEAN BAQUET<\/b> about a recent sting operation targeting national security reporter <b>MATTHEW ROSENBERG<\/b>, according to two people present.<\/p>\n<p><b>Project Veritas, a group that has <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/james-okeefe-project-veritas-sting-fails-2017-11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">singled out&#8221;,&#8221;link&#8221;:{&#8220;target&#8221;:&#8221;NEW&#8221;,&#8221;attributes&#8221;:[],&#8221;url&#8221;:&#8221;https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/james-okeefe-project-veritas-sting-fails-2017-11&#8243;,&#8221;_id&#8221;:&#8221;0000017f-8870-d301-a3ff-8f7e55f50001&#8243;,&#8221;_type&#8221;:&#8221;33ac701a-72c1-316a-a3a5-13918cf384df&#8221;},&#8221;_id&#8221;:&#8221;0000017f-8870-d301-a3ff-8f7e55f50002&#8243;,&#8221;_type&#8221;:&#8221;02ec1f82-5e56-3b8c-af6e-6fc7c8772266&#8243;}&#8221;><b>singled out<\/b><\/a><b> journalists and Democrats<\/b> in undercover operations, posted a pair of videos this week showing Rosenberg divulging details about sensitive newsroom dynamics and disparaging his colleagues. Rosenberg suggested that the media was overhyping the siege on the Capitol on Jan. 6, scoffing at colleagues who were there that day who said they were traumatized, and blasted what he called left-leaning younger Times reporters wrapped up in a \u201cwoke\u201d culture influencing coverage.<\/p>\n<p><b>The videos immediately caused tensions to flare among Times staff,<\/b> according to more than a half-dozen reporters who were granted anonymity to speak candidly. During the Thursday lunch, multiple reporters said they were upset about Rosenberg dissing their own coverage and badmouthing his coworkers.<\/p>\n<p><b>Baquet, the Times staffers told us, responded by criticizing<\/b> Rosenberg for being careless and stupid. The <a href=\"https:\/\/ad.doubleclick.net\/ddm\/clk\/522889182;330935784;w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>survey<\/b><\/a> also shows a majority find health care coverage costs unreasonable and a top priority health care issue for policymakers to address today.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p><b>The Times comms staff declined to comment, <\/b>and Rosenberg did not respond to requests for comment. But as WaPo\u2019s <b>Jeremy Barr <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jeremymbarr\/status\/1502035763801829397?s=21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweeted last night<\/a>,<b> <\/b>Baquet has blasted Project Veritas before. In 2017, he chided the group for ensnaring a junior-level employee. While the reporter said \u201creally stupid stuff,\u201d Baquet said at the time, he pinned most of the blame on Project Veritas.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cThe greater sin wasn\u2019t his, it was theirs,\u201d <\/b>he said. \u201cThey\u2019re just awful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Those comments reflect the mixed feelings over the current situation<\/b> among many reporters at the Times. While some reporters told us that management needs to address this issue or even want to see Rosenberg punished, there\u2019s deep concern about fueling Project Veritas\u2019 work.<\/p>\n<p><b>The group has used hidden cameras and\/or false identities<\/b> in an attempt to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/james-okeefe-project-veritas-sting-fails-2017-11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">catch members of the media or Democrats<\/a> saying embarrassing things. It has recently singled out New York Times reporters who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/11\/11\/us\/politics\/project-veritas-journalism-political-spying.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have written<\/a> about the group\u2019s tactics as well as an ongoing Justice Department investigation over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/12\/16\/us\/politics\/ashley-biden-project-veritas-diary.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">how the group obtained<\/a><b> <\/b>Biden\u2019s daughter <b>ASHLEY\u2019s<\/b> diary.<\/p>\n<p><b>Those reporters include ADAM GOLDMAN<\/b>, <b>MICHAEL SCHMIDT<\/b> and <b>MARK MAZZETTI<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Project Veritas has also sued the New York Times<\/b> for defamation.<\/p>\n<p><b>Many at the Times \u2014 even those unhappy with Rosenberg \u2014 view the latest Project Veritas <\/b>hit as an attempt at intimidation. And they\u2019re loath to be seen as reacting to such tactics, which they say have crossed a line into harassment.<\/p>\n<p><b>Complicating the situation further, <\/b>the group in the past has released videos that were later found to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thetwo-way\/2011\/03\/14\/134528545\/npr-okeefe-inappropriately-edited-video-execs-words-still-egregious\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">selectively edited <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/rickungar\/2013\/03\/08\/james-okeefe-pays-100000-to-acorn-employee-he-smeared-conservative-media-yawns\/?sh=19350cf814bd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">or misleading<\/a>. No problem. The other day he was about to take one, holding a Tito\u2019s and soda, when someone interrupted the photo opp: \u2018OK, but you gotta take the Tito\u2019s out\u2019 \u2014 to make sure the mayor didn\u2019t look bad. But no, Adams said, the Tito\u2019s can stay. \u2018Like, why?\u2019 he tells me later. \u2018I drink Tito\u2019s and seltzer!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>\u2014 On this \u201clove at first sight\u201d with Biden: <\/b>\u201cYou see [Adams] behind the darkened windows of the presidential motorcade, riding thigh-to-thigh with Joe Biden himself. Sitting in the backseat, Adams felt it was \u2018love at first sight.\u2019 That this was a guy who gets it. <b>\u2018He pulled out his lunch,\u2019 the mayor says. \u2018A peanut butter and jelly sandwich \u2014 and he said, \u201cYou want half?\u201d\u2019\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u2014 And this reaction from Schumer: <\/b>\u201cWhen I reached [Senate Majority Leader] <b>CHUCK SCHUMER<\/b> to talk about Adams, the New York senator praised the mayor\u2019s confidence and work ethic. \u2026 When I asked if he agreed that Adams is the new face of the party, Schumer cut me off before I could finish the question. \u2018Yeah, I\u2019m not going to comment on that.\u2019 I asked if there was a reason he was not going to comment on that. \u2019No,\u2019 he replied, and the call ended moments later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>CRUZ CRUISES WITH CONVOY \u2014<\/b> The \u201cPeople\u2019s Convoy\u201d \u2014 the group of truckers protesting protective pandemic measures around the Beltway \u2014 received a visit from Sen. <b>TED CRUZ<\/b> (R-Texas) on Thursday. Cruz dropped in on the group \u201cat the Hagerstown Speedway, telling crowds their voice was being heard,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2022\/03\/10\/peoples-convoy-protest-ted-cruz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WaPo\u2019s Ellie Silverman, Karina Elwood, Dana Hedgpeth and Luz Lazo write<\/a>. \u201cHe then boarded a truck and detoured just past noon to head into Washington, where he and convoy organizers called for an end to such mandates.\u201d <b><i>The convoy\u2019s impact:<\/i><\/b> \u201cLaw enforcement authorities in Virginia and Maryland said there have been no major incidents from the convoy\u2019s circling of the Beltway other than some minor congestion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>PHEW, THIS ONE\u2019S A DOOZY \u2014 ELENA BRANSON,<\/b> aka <b>ELENA CHERNYKH,<\/b> is a Russian American national who \u201cstands accused of illegally pushing pro-Russia policies in the United States for nearly a decade, at the direction of top Kremlin officials, without registering under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), according to a criminal complaint federal prosecutors filed this week in the Southern District of New York,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/accused-russian-agent-elena-branson-gave-to-one-politician-tulsi-gabbard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Daily Beast\u2019s Roger Sollenberger and Shannon Vavra report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cBut, in all her time lobbying for Russian goals,<\/b> she gave money to just one federal candidate: [former Democratic Hawaii Rep. <b>TULSI<\/b>]<b> GABBARD. <\/b>\u2026 While the combined total of those donations isn\u2019t colossal by any means \u2014 a whopping $59.95 \u2014 they do raise questions about why an alleged Russian agent, tasked with currying favor with U.S. politicians, would zero in on Gabbard, and only Gabbard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span><b>VALLEY TALK<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>AMAZON\u2019S \u2018F-U APPROACH\u2019 \u2014 <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/amazon-washington-biden-carney-antitrust-11646763777\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WSJ\u2019s Dana Mattioli has a big read<\/a> on Amazon\u2019s standing in Biden\u2019s Washington. <b><i>The conclusion:<\/i><\/b> The mega-company is \u201cfacing a multifront battle with the U.S. government \u2014 with few allies.\u201d That\u2019s led Amazon execs to deploy a \u201ccombative strategy\u201d that has \u201calienated many of Amazon\u2019s executives in Washington, causing a number of departures at its D.C. offices.\u201d <b><i>Some highlights:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u2014 JAY CARNEY, the former Biden aide turned policy chief at Amazon,<\/b> \u201chasn\u2019t appeared to hold much sway at the White House. Since Mr. Biden\u2019s inauguration, he has visited the White House only once, according to White House visitor logs. \u2026 Last year, Mr. Carney directed a frustrated message at [<b>RON<\/b>] <b>KLAIN,<\/b> the White House chief of staff, after Mr. Biden hosted the CEOs of Walmart Inc., Gap Inc., Lowe\u2019s Cos. and JPMorgan Chase &#038; Co., said people familiar with the exchange. Amazon wasn\u2019t invited, and Mr. Carney pleaded for Amazon to be considered for future events, the people said. In December, Mr. Carney messaged Mr. Klain questioning him about a Politico article stating that Mr. Biden was embracing Amazon rival Walmart, said one of the people.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/12\/03\/biden-walmart-doug-mcmillon-523702\" target=\"_blank\" data-debug-source-uuid=\"0000017d-7e1f-dca7-a1fd-ff1f0a620003\" data-debug-source-site=\"POLITICO\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><i>ICYMI, the POLITICO article in question, by Hailey Fuchs<\/i><\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>\u2014 \u201cThe public-policy team has a strategy called \u2018watering the flowers,\u2019<\/b> said the current and former employees. An internal database tracks employee interactions with policy makers, keeping notes on meetings and talking points, to ensure that everyone important for Amazon\u2019s agenda is getting sufficient attention.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cWhile the D.C. team was metaphorically watering flowers<\/b>, they complained of Amazon executives in Seattle \u2018stomping them out,\u2019 one of the people said. Last March, for example, Amazon\u2019s public-relations account on Twitter posted a series of aggressive tweets directed at the politicians Amazon\u2019s D.C. team meets with. \u2026 The tweets departed from the tone of traditional corporate public-relations accounts. Unlike most tweets from Amazon\u2019s news account, these tweets were crafted by executives including [<b>JEFF BEZOS<\/b>]<b> <\/b>and Carney, said people at Amazon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>\u2014 \u201c\u2018Amazon had the biggest middle-finger-to-Congress<\/b> approach that I\u2019ve ever seen with any company I\u2019ve ever dealt with,\u2019 said <b>GARRETT VENTRY,<\/b> former chief of staff to Rep. <b>KEN BUCK<\/b> of Colorado, a ranking Republican member on the Antitrust Subcommittee. Since hiring Mr. Carney, Amazon has expanded its lobbying operations. \u2026 Amazon also has built a sizable policy team of employees who once worked at agencies such as the FTC and Congress, many of whom have deep experience navigating the nuances of Washington relationships.
