He was 71.<\/p>\n<p>Hurt\u2019s son, Will, said in a statement that Hurt died Sunday of natural causes. He said Hurt died peacefully, among family. Deadline first reported Hurt\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>In a long-running career, Hurt was three times nominated for an Academy Award, winning for 1985\u2019s \u201cKiss of the Spider Woman.\u201d After his screen debut in 1980\u2019s Paddy Chayefsky-scripted \u201cAltered States\u201d as a psychopathologist studying schizophrenia and experimenting with sensory deprivation, Hurt quickly emerged as one of the 1980s foremost leading men.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>In Lawrence Kasdan\u2019s 1981 steamy neo noir \u201cBody Heat,\u201d Hurt starred alongside Kathleen Turner. In 1983\u2019s \u201cThe Big Chill,\u201d again with Kasdan, Hurt played the Vietnam War veteran Nick Carlton, one of a group of college pals who gather for their friend\u2019s funeral.<\/p>\n<p>Having started in New York theater, Hurt then returned to the stage to star on Broadway in David Rabe\u2019s \u201cHurlyburly,\u201d for which he was nominated for a Tony. Shortly after came \u201cKiss of the Spider Woman,\u201d which won Hurt the best actor Oscar for his performance as a gay prisoner in a repressive South American dictatorship.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cActing is a very intimate and private thing,\u201d Hurt told <em>The New York Times<\/em> in 1983. \u201cThe art of acting requires as much solitude as the art of writing. Yeah, you bump up against other people, but you have to learn a craft, technique. It\u2019s work. There\u2019s this odd thing that my acting is assumed to be this clamor for attention to my person, as if I needed so much love or so much attention that I would give up my right to be a private person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Albert Brooks, his director and co-star in \u201cBroadcast News,\u201d was among those responding to Hurt\u2019s passing. \u201cSo sad to hear this news,\u201d wrote Brooks. \u201cWorking with him on \u2018Broadcast News\u2019 was amazing.
