Many tout <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/bitcoin-boom-or-bust\/\">bitcoin<\/a>, the world&#8217;s largest cryptocurrency by market value, as a long-term store of value. There&#8217;s a raft of other, smaller digital tokens, too.<\/p>\n<p>Crypto backers say it remains early earnings for the industry \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/BTC.CM=\">bitcoin<\/a> itself has only been around since January 2009. Still, crypto startups are attracting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/02\/02\/crypto-start-ups-raised-huge-venture-funding-rounds-in-january.html\">billions of dollars of venture capital<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the burgeoning asset class remains volatile, and regulators like Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/gary-gensler\/\">Gary Gensler<\/a> have warned about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/10\/19\/cnbc-transcript-sec-chair-gary-gensler-speaks-with-cnbcs-squawk-on-the-street-today.html\">its &#8220;highly speculative&#8221; nature<\/a> and the lack of investor protection. The outgoing chair of the U.K.&#8217;s financial regulator also has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/12\/24\/cryptocurrencies-why-the-imf-is-concerned.html\">warned about pump-and-dump schemes<\/a> in certain digital tokens.<\/p>\n<p>Among crypto&#8217;s detractors, billionaire businessman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/charlie-munger\/\">Charlie Munger<\/a>, a longtime partner of Warren Buffett and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/BRK.A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Berkshire Hathaway<\/a> vice chair, has also been critical of digital currencies and their volatility. In February, he said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/02\/16\/charlie-munger-calls-inflation-the-no-1-danger-apart-from-nuclear-war-pans-crypto-and-trading-apps.html\">he wishes the U.S. had banned them<\/a>. Buffett is no fan either, calling bitcoin in 2018 &#8220;rat poison squared.&#8221; Others have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/04\/23\/bitcoin-a-gimmick-and-resembles-a-ponzi-scheme-black-swan-author-.html\">likened bitcoin to a Ponzi scheme<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"RegularArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 class=\"RelatedContent-header\">Read more about cryptocurrencies from CNBC Pro<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Asked by CNBC&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/andrew-ross-sorkin\/\">Andrew Ross Sorkin<\/a> whether some cryptocurrencies will not even be around in a decade, O&#8217;Leary said he&#8217;s taken that risk factor into consideration.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You have to be diversified. I own 32 different positions, including equity FTX itself,&#8221; O&#8217;Leary said while disclosing he&#8217;s a paid spokesperson for the cryptocurrency exchange, founded by 30-year-old billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The whole point is, you don&#8217;t know who is going to win. Is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/ETH.CM=\">Ethereum<\/a> going to win? Is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/SOL.CM=\">solana<\/a> going to win? Is it Helium or is it Avalanche? I own them all,&#8221; said O&#8217;Leary, who is a co-host of &#8220;Shark Tank&#8221; and makes other venture capital investments. He&#8217;s also the founder and chairman of <a href=\"https:\/\/oshares.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">O&#8217;Shares ETFs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>O&#8217;Leary&#8217;s comments Friday come two days after President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/joe-biden\/\">Joe Biden<\/a> signed an executive order that directs the U.S. government to analyze the cryptocurrency industry. The administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/03\/09\/fact-sheet-president-biden-to-sign-executive-order-on-ensuring-responsible-innovation-in-digital-assets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says the order&#8217;s goal<\/a> is to both address risks while &#8220;harnessing the potential benefits of digital assets and their underlying technology.&#8221; \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It wasn&#8217;t an all out ban, so that&#8217;s good news,&#8221; O&#8217;Leary said. However, he expressed concerns about the way Biden&#8217;s directive includes an emphasis on climate risks associated with cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n<p>The act of mining bitcoin \u2014 which, in practice means running computers to verify transactions across the blockchain network \u2014 requires a lot of power. As a result, critics have lamented the carbon footprint of bitcoin mining.<\/p>\n<p>O&#8217;Leary said he&#8217;s invested in at least one private bitcoin mining facility.
