The investigations focus on the Masters of the Universe and their secret \u201cJedi Blue\u201d deal to maintain their duopoly stranglehold on the online advertising business.<\/p>\n<p>TechCrunch <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/03\/11\/google-meta-jedi-blue-eu-uk-antitrust-probes\/\">reports<\/a>\u00a0that the European Commission and the UK have launched formal antitrust investigations into Google and Facebook relating to the companies\u2019 online ad businesses. The probes were announced by the\u00a0EU\u2019s competition division and the UK\u2019s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) earlier this week and focus on allegations of collusion between Google and Facebook.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<div id=\"attachment_17585586\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/media.breitbart.com\/media\/2021\/08\/Sundar-Pichai-CEO-of-Google.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sundar Pichai CEO of Google ( Carsten Koall \/Getty)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_14405447\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Mark-Zuckerberg-Facebook-creepy-smile.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14405447\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Mark-Zuckerberg-Facebook-creepy-smile.jpg\" alt=\"Mark Zuckerberg Facebook creepy smile\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mark Zuckerberg Facebook creepy smile ( KENZO TRIBOUILLARD \/Getty)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The allegations relate to a September 2018 internal agreement between the two tech giants called \u201cJedi Blue\u201d which has been accused of undermining competing ad systems in favor of Google\u2019s Open bidding System.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Breitbart News\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2021\/01\/18\/report-google-and-facebook-made-a-secret-deal-to-dominate-online-advertising\/\">previously reported<\/a>\u00a0that Facebook revealed in 2017 that it was testing a new way of selling ads online that could threaten Google\u2019s control of the online advertising market, but just two years later Facebook announced that it would be joining an alliance of companies backing a similar effort by Google, seemingly abandoning its own plans that would have allowed the company to better compete with Google.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook never clarified why it seemed to abandon its own project, but an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2022\/01\/17\/texas-led-antitrust-lawsuit-mark-zuckerberg-and-sundar-pichai-signed-off-on-facebook-google-ads-collusion\/\">antitrust lawsuit<\/a> filed by Texas attorney general Ken Paxton in 2022 alleges that Google had extended to Facebook a sweetheart deal to be a partner.<\/p>\n<p>The deal between Google and Facebook was reportedly code-named \u201cJedi Blue\u201d and pertains to a segment of the online advertising market called programmatic advertising. A new advertising method called header bidding emerged as part of a workaround to reduce the reliance on Google\u2019s ad platforms.<\/p>\n<p>It has been claimed that Google and Facebook developed a quid pro quo agreement to rig the advertising market in their favor, with Google giving Facebook preferential rates and priority choice of ad placements in return for Facebook supporting its ad system and not developing competing technology.<\/p>\n<p>The EU stated that it is concerned that the Jedi Blue agreement \u201cmay form part of efforts to exclude adtech services competing with Google\u2019s Open Bidding programme, and therefore restrict or distort competition in markets for online display advertising, to the detriment of publishers, and ultimately consumers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The EU\u2019s EVP and competition chief, Margrethe Vestager recently commented on whether Facebook was an active participant in the scheme or whether Google acted alone, stating:\u00a0\u201cWe have not concluded yet if it\u2019s a Google thing alone or if they were in it together. It\u2019s not a given that Meta was conscious of the effects of the deal and that\u2019s what we have to investigate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany publishers rely on online display advertising to fund online content for consumers,\u201d Vestager also said in a statement. \u201cVia the so-called \u2018Jedi Blue\u2019 agreement between Google and Meta, a competing technology to Google\u2019s Open Bidding may have been targeted with the aim to weaken it and exclude it from the market for displaying ads on publisher websites and apps.
