In Texas, Republican Gov. Greg Abbott <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/woke-businesses-trans-surgeries-for-kids-arent-child-abuse\">has drawn fire<\/a> for calling transgender treatments for children \u201cchild abuse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Twitter users who spoke out Saturday said that they began taking testosterone as soon as they turned 18. I was too loud, too bossy, too impulsive, too emotional. I had no idea why it felt like so many people just immediately didn\u2019t like me. My parents enrolled me in social skills group therapy when I was 10.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michelle said she began to discover activist gender conversations on the internet, how her mental health was suffering, and how she became suicidal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was vulnerable, desperate, and young,\u201d tweeted Michelle. \u201cOn top of that, I had people online telling me \u2018if you think you\u2019re trans, you are\u2019 and \u2018cis people don\u2019t think about gender this much.\u2019 I heard the \u2018only 1% regret it\u2019 statistic, and I thought I\u2019d be fine. That could never be me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She continued: \u201cWhat reasons did I have to not trust them? Why would so many people tell me things that weren\u2019t true? Why would my doctors go along with it if I weren\u2019t really a man? Why would therapists risk my mental health if they weren\u2019t sure whether I would benefit from transition?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is the state of activist-controlled health care,\u201d said Michelle. \u201cThere is one narrative that is acceptable, and every person who does not fit that narrative \u2014 who regrets transitioning, who returns to living as their sex, who talks about the potential for issues \u2014 is told to shut up.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">On <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/DetransAwarenessDay?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#DetransAwarenessDay<\/a>, I call for safeguarding measures to be put in place for those considering medical transition. An invasive treatment causing permanent changes should be the last resort for a psychiatric condition. But that doesn\u2019t mean they should be ignored. Quite the contrary, actually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Watson <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34665380\/\">cited a 2021 study by Dr. Lisa Littman<\/a>, physician-scientist whose research is focused on gender dysphoria, showing that out\u00a0of 100 detransitioners, 60% detransitioned after they became more comfortable identifying as their biological sex.<\/p>\n<p>The study also found that 49% of that group detransitioned over \u201cconcerns about potential medical complications from transitioning,\u201d and 38% detransitioned after \u201ccoming to the view that their gender dysphoria was caused by something specific such as trauma, abuse, or a mental health condition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe majority (55.0%) felt that they did not receive an adequate evaluation from a doctor or mental health professional before starting transition and only 24.0% of respondents informed their clinicians that they had detransitioned,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34665380\/\">study\u2019s abstract says<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are many different reasons and experiences leading to detransition,\u201d the abstract continues. \u201cMore research is needed to understand this population, determine the prevalence of detransition as an outcome of transition, meet the medical and psychological needs of this population, and better inform the process of evaluation and counseling prior to transition.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Why are we doing this? But the scars remain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I realized that being a trans man wasn\u2019t what I wanted anymore, I fell into despair,\u201d Lidinsky-Smith wrote. \u201cMy body was permanently changed. The surgery was the hardest thing to deal with. The scars hurt. I missed the feeling of having an intact, unscarred body. I was convinced my life had been ruined.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Regret can be crushing for detransitioners, Lidinsky-Smith wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut somehow, eventually, even after the most catastrophic of mistakes, life goes on,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s still your only life, and you still have to figure out how to survive. It took me a while, and I learned I could survive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbove all, I just want to say: you can come back from this,\u201d she continued. \u201cPeople have lived through a lot more. I am not a guide, I have no special wisdom, but I come to you humbled, scarred, and holding out my hand.
