Warsaw repeatedly denied that it was even considering sending its own jets, which were designed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2021\/12\/china-is-becoming-the-soviet-union\/\">Soviet Union<\/a>, making the decision to send them to the United States a shock.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/03\/08\/poland-transfers-mig-fighters-to-the-us-as-ukraine-asks-for-help-00015259\">Speaking to POLITICO<\/a>, a senior official from the Biden administration said that both the United States intelligence community and the Department of Defense had opposed plans to transfer Polish planes to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/03\/why-russia-hasnt-taken-over-ukraine-food-and-fuel-shortages\/\">Ukraine<\/a>, citing concerns about the logistics of transporting and handing over the planes. The official also accused Warsaw of not consulting with American counterparts before making the announcement.\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Washington Rejects Proposals<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said that the Pentagon didn\u2019t believe that Poland\u2019s proposal was \u2018tenable.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is simply not clear to us that there is a substantive rationale for it,\u201d Kirby explained. \u201cWe will continue to consult with Poland and our other NATO allies about this issue and the difficult logistical challenges it presents, but we do not believe Poland\u2019s proposal is a tenable one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, that doesn\u2019t mean the jets won\u2019t find their way to Ukraine. Kirby said that the final decision to transfer the planes to Ukraine was \u201cultimately one for the Polish government.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. federal government appears to be unwilling to provide additional arms to Ukrainians for use in fighting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/01\/the-russian-military-4-myths-that-need-to-die\/\">Russian forces<\/a> over threats issued by the Kremlin.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe prospect of fighter jets \u2018at the disposal of the Government of the United States of America\u2019 departing from a U.S.\/NATO base in Germany to fly into airspace that is contested with Russia over Ukraine raises serious concerns for the entire NATO alliance,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/03\/08\/politics\/poland-jets-ukraine-russia\/index.html\">Kirby said.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are Ukrainian Pilots Capable of Using Poland\u2019s Advanced Jets?<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>On February 28, Velina Tchakarova, the director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aies.at\/\">Austria Institute for European and Security Policy<\/a>, predicted that Poland would be most likely to deliver MiG-29 jets to Ukraine first, given that their fleet of 30 jets is the \u201cmost refurbished\u201d compared to Bulgarian and Slovakian jets.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce again, Poland will be at the pole position in defending Ukraine\u2019s sovereignty and freedom,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/vtchakarova\/status\/1498196247345250304\">she said. <\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>It remains to be seen whether Ukrainian pilots are capable of flying the jets as Poland\u2019s MiG-29s could be very different than what Ukraine flies.\n<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, the first round of modernization of Poland\u2019s MiG-29 jets <a href=\"https:\/\/defence24.com\/polish-mig-29-jet-fighters-modernised-fulcrums-compliant-with-the-nato-standards\">was completed<\/a>. On November 4, 2014, deputy leader of the Armament Inspectorate Jan Wo\u017aniak attended a ceremony at Military Aviation Works No. 2 to celebrate the modernization process of their aircraft, which included modern avionics, new mission computers, and a NATO-standards-compliant communications suite.\n<\/p>\n<p>The most notable change in the jets is the new data visualization system, which consists of a 5\u201dx4\u201d modern HUD display in the cockpit.\n<\/p>\n<p>All of this creates an interesting set of questions, specifically, how much different are these MiGs? It is not clear how much new training Ukraine\u2019s air force personnel would need to not only fly Poland\u2019s MiG-29s and how they would do that during wartime.\n<\/p>\n<p>Also, experts have questioned how Ukraine would be able to maintain them depending on the notifications made by Poland to the base Soviet MiG-29.\n<\/p>\n<p><em>Jack Buckby is a British author, counter-extremism researcher, and journalist based in New York.
