Larry Hogan <a href=\"https:\/\/governor.maryland.gov\/2022\/03\/10\/governor-hogan-statement-on-budget-surplus-and-suspension-of-the-gas-tax\/\">said<\/a> in a statement Thursday. \u201cWe also support ongoing efforts in the legislature to suspend automatic increases in the gas tax.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I have called on the Biden administration to increase domestic energy production to help lower costs,\u201d he continued. \u201cNow more than ever, we must come together to take bold, bipartisan action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maryland House Speaker Adrienne Jones said the gas tax suspension was \u201cthe right thing to do,\u201d NBC affiliate WBAL-TV <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbaltv.com\/article\/gas-tax-maryland-emergency-suspension\/39399009\">reported<\/a>. On Friday, the average price of gasoline in Maryland jumped to $4.31 per gallon, <a href=\"https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\/state-gas-price-averages\/\">according<\/a> to AAA which tracks gasoline costs daily. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/10\/democrats-aim-to-increase-taxes-on-big-oil-amid-record-gas-prices\/\">(RELATED: Democrats Aim To Increase Taxes On Big Oil Amid Record Gas Prices)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, a coalition of six governors \u2014 Michigan, Colorado, Minnesota, New Mexico, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1Qc8bEUPqHkq5Yhc8UxzAZadhoiE3zO8k\/view\">wrote a letter<\/a> to bipartisan congressional leadership, urging a suspension of the federal gas tax. The current federal gas tax rate is 18.4 cents per gallon while the average state rate is 30.63 cents per gallon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt a time when people are directly impacted by rising prices on everyday goods, a federal gas tax holiday is a tool in the toolbox to reduce costs for Americans,\u201d the governors wrote.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7390017\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7390017\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maryland Gov. (Shannon Finney\/Getty Images for MGM National Harbor)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Nationwide, gas prices have <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/07\/gasoline-prices-all-time-high-russia-white-house\/\">soared<\/a> past the previous all-time high recorded prior to the Great Recession and housing crisis in 2008. The average price at the pump across the U.S. reached $4.33 per gallon, the AAA data <a href=\"https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\/state-gas-price-averages\/\">showed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine has caused uncertainty in global energy markets,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/02\/24\/crude-oil-prices-100-per-barrel-russia-ukraine\/\">leading<\/a> to higher oil and gasoline prices. But prior to the invasion, gas prices were already elevated and rising, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/petroleum\/gasdiesel\/\">according<\/a> to government data.<\/p>\n<p>Governors and legislatures in Georgia, Michigan, California and Florida have also offered varying tax relief proposals, Reuters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/us-states-weigh-tax-breaks-ease-pain-gas-pump-2022-03-10\/\">reported<\/a>. California\u2019s state gas tax is the highest in the country at 66.98 cents per gallon, <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfoundation.org\/state-gas-tax-rates-2021\/\">according<\/a> to the Tax Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn January we proposed to pause the gas tax increase. Now, it\u2019s clear we must go further,\u201d Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2022\/03\/08\/governor-newsom-delivers-state-of-the-state-address-3-8-22\/\">remarked<\/a> during his state of the state address Tuesday. \u201cThat\u2019s why \u2014 working with Legislative leadership \u2014 I\u2019ll be submitting a proposal to put money back in the pockets of Californians, to address rising gas prices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In early February, before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a group of Senate Democrats <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/02\/09\/democratic-senators-mark-kelly-maggie-hassan-gasoline-tax\/\">introduced<\/a> the Gas Prices Relief Act, legislation that would suspend the federal gas tax.<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
