Gavin Newsom\u2019s efforts last year. The\u00a0<span class=\"rollover-people\">Golden State governor splashed<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"rollover-people\">hundreds of dollars in direct payments to roughly\u00a0two-thirds of his constituents when facing a recall \u2014 which he\u00a0survived with a wide margin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cGovernor\u2019s careers live or die by whether people think the state is moving in the right or wrong direction,\u201d\u00a0Thad Kousser, a state government expert who chairs the political science department at the University of California-San Diego, told the\u00a0<em>Hill.\u00a0<\/em>\u201cNothing says I love you to your constituents like a check.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Vulnerable Democrat governors are looking into how they can ask their state\u2019s legislature to allow them to spend\u00a0hundreds of millions of dollars of their states\u2019\u00a0unanticipated tax revenue to cut checks to the voters in their state. In many cases, like Newsom last year, the money going to the voters to\u00a0politically benefit themselves could come from \u201cpandemic-era federal relief checks and a rapid economic rebound,\u201d the\u00a0<em>Hill\u00a0<\/em>stated.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wisconsin Democrat Gov.\u00a0<span class=\"rollover-people\">Tony Evers asked the Republican legislators, who turned him down Tuesday, to approve a $150 stimulus check for every resident.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"rollover-people\">Maine Democrat Gov.\u00a0Janet Mills proposed a budget that included $500 checks that would go out to roughly 800,000 eligible taxpayers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Kansas Democrat Gov. Laura Kelly proposed a one-time $250 tax rebate to any resident who filed a tax return last year.<\/li>\n<li>Michigan <span class=\"rollover-people\">Democrat\u00a0<\/span>Gov. <span class=\"rollover-people\">Gretchen Whitmer said that she wanted to use the $5 billion surplus in the state\u2019s\u00a0insurance fund to dish out a $400 rebate for each vehicle owned by drivers in the states.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"rollover-people\">New Mexico Democrat Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has pushed for there to be a statewide cut in gross receipts taxes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"rollover-people\">Connecticut Democrat Gov. Ned Lamont has proposed\u00a0cutting property taxes for a million residents.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"rollover-people\">Minnesota Democrat Gov.\u00a0Tim Walz\u00a0proposed giving more than 2.7 million Minnesotans checks \u2014\u00a0$500 per person and $1,000 per couple \u2014\u00a0in specific tax brackets.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cVoters want to see that their governor gets what they\u2019re going through and is trying to do something about it. A direct payment is a tangible way for a governor to show that they understand their constituents\u2019 economic challenges,\u201d\u00a0Jared Leopold,\u00a0former Democratic Governors Association advisor, told the\u00a0<em>Hill.\u00a0<\/em>\u201cAverage voters aren\u2019t combing through the state budget proposal, but they\u2019re definitely going to notice when a check shows up in their mailbox.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Hill\u00a0<\/em>acknowledged the Republican legislators being put in a difficult place by not approving their constituents free money had offered alternatives. The\u00a0Republican-controlled state Senate in\u00a0Minnesota\u00a0proposed permanent tax cuts while the\u00a0Republican-controlled legislature in\u00a0Kansas agreed with the governor to\u00a0eliminate a grocery tax.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt took\u00a0Joe Biden\u2019s plummeting approval ratings, an awful 2021 election season and their own lackluster poll numbers for Democrat governors to shamelessly start behaving like they care about inflation and lower taxes,\u201d said Republican Governors Association Spokesman Jesse Hunt. \u201cVoters prefer elected officials who fight to keep money in people\u2019s pockets year-round, no matter the election season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i>Jacob Bliss is a reporter for Breitbart News.
