Rowling slammed a U.K. official on Tuesday for being unwilling to define what a woman is, seemingly held back from giving a basic biological definition as to not offend transgender advocates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnneliese Dodds is the Shadow Equalities Minister in the UK, and she was recently asked to define what a female is on BBC\u2019s \u2018Woman\u2019s Hour,&#8217;\u201d Evie magazine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eviemagazine.com\/post\/jk-rowling-uk-shadow-equalities-minister-not-having-backbone-define-woman\">reported<\/a>. \u201cDodds responded by saying that it \u2018depends on what the context is,\u2019 and that the Equality Act \u2018doesn\u2019t say how you define\u2019 the word \u2018female.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the partial exchange, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spectator.co.uk\/article\/labour-flounders-to-define-the-word-woman-\">per<\/a> The Spectator:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"ContentPageBodyParagraph-module__paragraph--block ContentPageBodyParagraph-module__paragraph--size-medium--spacing-normal\"><em><strong class=\"ContentPageBodyStrong-module__strong\">EB (Emma Barnett): \u2018<\/strong>And Labour\u2019s definition of a woman?\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentPageBodyParagraph-module__paragraph--block ContentPageBodyParagraph-module__paragraph--size-medium--spacing-normal\"><em><strong class=\"ContentPageBodyStrong-module__strong\">AD (Anneliese Dodds): \u2018<\/strong>Well, I have to say that there are different definitions legally around what a woman actually is. I mean, you look at the definition within the Equality Act, and I think it just says someone who is adult and female, I think, but then doesn\u2019t say how you define either of those things. I mean obviously, that\u2019s when you\u2019ve got the biological definition, legal definition all kinds of things\u2026\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentPageBodyParagraph-module__paragraph--block ContentPageBodyParagraph-module__paragraph--size-medium--spacing-normal\"><em><strong class=\"ContentPageBodyStrong-module__strong\">EB:\u00a0<\/strong>\u2018With respect I didn\u2019t ask for that. What\u2019s the Labour definition?\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentPageBodyParagraph-module__paragraph--block ContentPageBodyParagraph-module__paragraph--size-medium--spacing-normal\"><em><strong class=\"ContentPageBodyStrong-module__strong\">AD:<\/strong>\u00a0\u2018Oh I think with respect Emma, I think it does depend what the context is surely. I mean surely that is important here. You know, there are people who have decided that they have to make that transition. You know I\u2019ve spoken with many of them. It\u2019s been a very difficult process for many of those people. And you know, understandably, because they live as a woman, you know, they want to be defined as a woman. That\u2019s what the Gender Recognition Act, again a Labour government brought into place.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cSomeone please send the Shadow Minister for Equalities a dictionary and a backbone. #HappyInternationalWomensDay,\u201d Rowling responded on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>The author, known for standing up to radical transgender activists, added a follow-up tweet praising Joanna Cherry, MP for Edinburgh South West. The author appeared on an episode of \u201cDr. Phil\u201d in January and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/j-k-rowling-slams-new-transgender-bill-she-says-will-hurt-the-most-vulnerable-women\">asked<\/a> LGBT activists Ethan and Addison just that, tripping up the activist:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cWhat is a woman? Can you tell me what a woman is?\u201d Walsh queried.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cNo, I can\u2019t,\u201d Ethan admitted, \u201cbecause it\u2019s not for me to say. Womanhood looks different for everybody.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Speaking to Addison, Walsh stated, \u201cYou stood up here and said, \u2018Trans women are women.\u2019 What is a woman?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWomanhood is \u2026 something that I cannot define,\u201d Addison said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBut you used the word,\u201d Walsh pushed back. \u201cSo what did you mean when you said, \u2018Trans women are women\u2019?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI do not define what a woman is because I do not identity as a woman,\u201d Addison responded. \u201cWomanhood is something that is an umbrella term.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThat describes what?\u201d Walsh interjected.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cPeople who identify as a woman,\u201d Addison said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Walsh, again, pressed, \u201cIdentify as what?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cA woman,\u201d Addison said. \u201cWhat is that?\u201d Walsh pressed.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cTo each their own,\u201d Addison said, adding that \u201ceach person\u201d is \u201cgoing to have a different relationship with their own gender identity and define it differently.
