But the problem this survey is how it\u2019s being used to bolster claims of liberal intolerance. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/WAR0LH77xH\">https:\/\/t.co\/WAR0LH77xH<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ida Bae Wells (@nhannahjones) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nhannahjones\/status\/1501669643810918405?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 9, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-123b907a=\"\"><\/section>\n<section data-v-123b907a=\"\">\n<p>She further <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nhannahjones\/status\/1501670708660903941\">says<\/a> it\u2019s wrong that conservatives use this report to bolster their claims about college campuses being excessively liberal and &#8220;too intolerant&#8221; to handle. Hannah-Jones <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nhannahjones\/status\/1501671121791373316\">asserts<\/a> that it\u2019s wrong for white conservatives to claim they are suffering, because students of all stripes experience the phenomenon. <\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-123b907a=\"\">\n<p>To decode what Hannah-Jones is trying to say: she seems to believe white people and minorities can\u2019t both have this problem mutually. To her it\u2019s <em>one <\/em>or the <em>other<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-123b907a=\"\">\n<p>The reality of what the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefire.org\/critics-of-fires-free-speech-rankings-get-it-wrong-again\/\">FIRE blog post<\/a> points out is that students in the &#8220;white,&#8221; &#8220;black,&#8221; &#8220;hispanic,&#8221; and &#8220;Asian&#8221; blocs experience LESS feelings of self-censorship from their multiracial and American Indian counterparts.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-123b907a=\"\">\n<p>FIRE&#8217;s analysis of the data reads: &#8220;According to the survey, one in five [b]lack students report self-censoring &#8216;fairly&#8217; or &#8216;very&#8217; often, as do almost one in give Hispanic (18%) and Asian (17%) students. These percentages are higher for multiracial students (22%), American Indian students (25%), and students who identified their race\/ethnicity as &#8216;Something else&#8217; (32%). when it came to sexuality, students identifying as heterosexual\/straight or as &#8216;something else&#8217; self-censored most often.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-123b907a=\"\">\n<figure class=\"kg-card kg-image-card\"><\/figure>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-123b907a=\"\">\n<p>It\u2019s only with the demographics of sexuality that Hannah-Jones can even begin to make the unilateral claims she asserted within her tweets. But even then it\u2019s straight people who feel compelled to self-censor beyond any other demographic.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-123b907a=\"\">\n<p>Otherwise things just don\u2019t match up.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-123b907a=\"\">\n<p>When it comes to the FIRE blog post, the organization attempts to address critique brought forward by Hannah-Jones. Which resulted from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/07\/opinion\/campus-speech-cancel-culture.html\"><em>New York Times<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>op-ed by former FIRE intern Emma Camp.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-123b907a=\"\">\n<figure class=\"kg-card kg-embed-card\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Many of these articles\/columns site the same study but it\u2019s never been clear to me which type of students are self-censoring and which views. How do we know racial minorities or LQBTQ students or progressives are not included in this number? Truth is, we don\u2019t. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/YzsLqxvQRL\">pic.twitter.com\/YzsLqxvQRL<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ida Bae Wells (@nhannahjones) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nhannahjones\/status\/1500816006666760202?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 7, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-123b907a=\"\">\n<p>Much of the group\u2019s response to feedback was a mix of saying people who were critical haven\u2019t taken a meaningful look at the data, alongside saying the parties involved in this discussion to begin with approaching the discussion from a purposefully sensible point of view.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-123b907a=\"\">\n<p>&#8220;We don\u2019t just protect speech from the right. We don\u2019t just protect speech from the left. We defend protected speech, period,&#8221; the post on FIRE reassures amid the claims by Hannah-Jones.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-123b907a=\"\">\n<p>In support of that, FIRE points to how not only they\u2019ve defended the likes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefire.org\/in-for-a-pence-in-for-a-pound-mike-pences-appearance-at-stanford-marks-victory-for-free-speech\/\">Mike Pence<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefire.org\/dartmouth-evades-questions-after-moving-andy-ngo-event-online-so-fire-goes-to-the-source\/\">Andy Ngo<\/a> in the past, but also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefire.org\/fire-statement-unc-trustees-alleged-nixing-1619-project-creator-tenured-position\/\">Hannah-Jones<\/a> in her pursuit of a tenure at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-123b907a=\"\">\n<p>FIRE points to their <a href=\"https:\/\/rankings.thefire.org\">openly available data<\/a> for critics to review when making their observations and assessments.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-123b907a=\"\">\n<p>The free speech group acknowledges both sides of the conversation. On one hand there\u2019s a student at Arizona State University who said they are &#8220;scared to be openly transgender&#8221; at their school given what they see as an overtly conservative climate.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-123b907a=\"\">\n<p>But also: FIRE&#8217;s rebuttal goes as far as taking a meaningful look at the question posed by Hannah-Jones. What kind of censorship do black and colored students face on campus?<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-123b907a=\"\">\n<p>People who fit that demographic provide responses:<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-123b907a=\"\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Barnard College<\/strong>: &#8220;In a class discussion after a controversial &#8216;racist&#8217; incident involving a black student and public safety officers, I wanted to express that I didn&#8217;t think the actions of the officers were entirely unjustified. I felt like I couldn\u2019t say this because everyone around me was saying how racist it was (even though none of these students were black but I was).&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>University of Virginia<\/strong>: &#8220;As a person of color at a university that is predominantly white and has a culture around the rich, white lifestyle, it can be hard to express opinions that call out those attitudes.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-123b907a=\"\">\n<p>But when it comes to the general mission objectives as set forth by the body of work presented by Hannah-Jones, she&#8217;s someone who in the past <a href=\"https:\/\/thepostmillennial.com\/1619-project-founder-doxes-reporter-in-now-deleted-tweet-over-question-about-her-use-of-racial-slurs\">targeted<\/a> those who questioned her.
