There was no underlying reason for the declaration other than \u2018I\u2019m a Democrat, and I\u2019m different.\u2019 The world ate it up. The liberals ate it up. Everyone thought the norms, which many have erroneously thought were not followed, would return. The adults were back in charge. That all fell apart in less than a year. Afghanistan showed what many of us already knew about Joe Biden and this administration. They\u2019re appalling at foreign policy. There\u2019s a forty-year track record of Joe Biden being utterly incorrect in this area. The Afghan dash last August finally showed Europe that this guy really isn\u2019t some ace on international affairs. His diminished mental capacity also doesn\u2019t help.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the aftermath of the Kabul catastrophe, Europe would obviously remain our ally, but these nations had contingency plans for when this administration became a \u2018deer in the headlights&#8217; again. We might be seeing that with Ukraine. Russia has launched a full-blown invasion. Now, we have signed off on arms packages that are flowing into the nation, but it\u2019s the steps after the initial arms packages are delivered that seem to be posing trouble. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You see that with this Polish-US dispute over whether to <a href=\"https:\/\/townhall.com\/tipsheet\/mattvespa\/2022\/02\/21\/russia-might-have-just-made-one-giant-leap-towards-invasion-n2603571\">transfer old MiG fighter jets to Ukraine<\/a>. We supposedly green-lit this move with the jets. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said so last weekend. Now, the Pentagon says <a href=\"https:\/\/townhall.com\/tipsheet\/katiepavlich\/2022\/03\/09\/biden-shoots-down-polands-jet-transfer-to-ukraine-n2604314\">this move is untenable<\/a>. Biden\u2019s crew was supposedly taken by surprise by this proposal from Poland (via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/03\/08\/poland-transfers-mig-fighters-to-the-us-as-ukraine-asks-for-help-00015259\">Politico<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The Polish government stunned Washington on Tuesday by announcing it was ready to transfer its 28 MiG-29 fighter planes to the U.S., with the understanding that they would be handed over to Ukrainian pilots fighting off the Russian invasion.<\/p>\n<p>The move, which came with a request that the U.S. supply Poland with used jets with \u201ccorresponding capabilities,\u201d came after a week of back-and-forth negotiations between Washington and Warsaw over transferring the jets to Ukraine, which needs replacement jets to fight off the Russians.<\/p>\n<p>After vociferous denials by Warsaw that it was even considering donating MiGs to Ukraine, the offer arrived completely unexpected.<\/p>\n<p>A senior administration official told POLITICO that the U.S. intelligence community and the Defense Department have been opposed to the transfer of the Polish planes to Ukraine, due to the complications in getting them over the border and into the hands of Ukrainian pilots. The Polish government also didn\u2019t consult with their U.S. counterparts before making the announcement.<\/p>\n<p>A statement by Defense Department spokesperson John Kirby reflected that deep concern late Tuesday, saying \u201cwe do not believe Poland\u2019s proposal is a tenable one,\u201d and it is \u201csimply not clear to us that there is a substantive rationale for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Guardian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/mar\/09\/clash-over-poland-and-us-missile-plans-reveals-tensions-in-escalating-war\">has more of the details<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Part of the problem was that the Polish proposal was subtly but critically different to a scheme that had previously been discussed in private. Against the backdrop of highly charged diplomatic tensions, presentation matters.<\/p>\n<p>In essence, Poland said it would cooperate in strengthening the Ukrainian air force so long as this would be seen in Moscow as a US, Nato or EU scheme but not a Polish one.<\/p>\n<p>In its original, US-conceived iteration, the proposal was a trilateral deal whereby Poland would hand over the MiGs to Ukrainian pilots to fly into their homeland, and the US would then provide some substitute planes. Boris Johnson, an enthusiast, described the plan as \u201crent a MiG\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>That proposal, arguably, was not qualitatively different to Nato members providing Ukraine with Javelin anti-tank missiles. In return, Poland would eventually fill the hole in its air force with 28 F-16s being provided by the US.<\/p>\n<p>But under private pressure from the US, Poland felt the plan unduly exposed its citizens to Putin\u2019s ire. So instead, in a game of diplomatic pass the parcel, Poland tweaked the proposals so the planes would be sent free of charge to the US airbase in Ramstein, Germany, rather than being flown out of Poland into Ukraine. The move would literally take Poland out of the line of Russia\u2019s fire since the plan could be labelled as that of the US, Nato or the EU.<\/p>\n[\u2026]\n<p>Either way the public spat is a setback. Over the weekend the US secretary of state, Antony Blinken, had said a plan involving planes was under active consideration.<\/p>\n<p>The upshot after this mini-debacle is Russia retains air superiority. Ukrainian pilots who were being trained in Poland to fly the planes are now grounded with no machines with which to defend their country. An opportunity has been squandered.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The United States used to channel the role of QB1 in these matters. After Afghanistan and calls with Biden whose transcript I\u2019m sure reads like applesauce, we have other nations taking some matters in their own hands. It\u2019s what happens when everyone sees a confused, frail, weak, and stupid president. We\u2019re rudderless.
