The pharmaceutical and biotech company said it signed a memorandum of understanding with the government of Kenya to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-021-02483-w\">construct<\/a> a manufacturing center for mRNA-based vaccine products and candidates \u2014 including those against the Chinese coronavirus, HIV, and the Nipah virus \u2014 in the coming months.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<div id=\"attachment_19135274\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/media.breitbart.com\/media\/2021\/12\/GettyImages-1235142782.png\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Maasai woman is inoculated with a Moderna Covid-19 vaccine at Oltepesi Dispensary in Kajiado, Kenya, on September 9, 2021. (Photo by PATRICK MEINHARDT\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Moderna said it plans to invest up to $500 million towards the business deal with the goal of producing up to 500 million doses of mRNA vaccines per year for the African continent. The Kenya-based factory, which has yet to be built, will \u201cfocus on drug substance manufacturing,\u201d though its functions could later expand to include \u201cfill\/finish and packaging capabilities at the site.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. government helped coordinate Moderna\u2019s mRNA vaccine deal with Kenya, according to Moderna\u2019s March 7\u00a0press release. The statement included remarks acknowledging Washington\u2019s role in the vaccine deal by\u00a0Moderna CEO St\u00e9phane Bancel and Moderna\u00a0co-Founder and Chairman Noubar Afeyan.<\/p>\n<p>Bancel wrote:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote>\n<p>With our mRNA global public health vaccine program, including our vaccine programs against HIV and Nipah, and with this partnership with the Republic of Kenya, the African Union and the U.S. Government, we believe that this step will become one of many on a journey to ensure sustainable access to transformative mRNA innovation on the African continent and positively impact public health.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Afeyan wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>We would like to thank the Government of the Republic of Kenya for their support in bringing our mRNA manufacturing facility to Kenya, and thank the U.S. Government for assisting us in this process.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/StateHouseKenya\/status\/1500851908709343234?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1500851908709343234%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.africanews.com%2F2022%2F03%2F08%2Fcovid-19-moderna-to-build-mrna-vaccine-manufacturing-facility-in-kenya%2F\">issued<\/a> a statement to announce the Moderna deal on March 7. These include potential new mRNA medicines for treating infectious diseases, cancer, rare diseases and cardiovascular disease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe novel mRNA process uses the genetic code for the spike protein of the coronavirus and is thought to trigger a better immune response than traditional vaccines,\u201d according to Africanews. \u201cScientists hope the technology, which is easier to scale up than traditional vaccine methods, might ultimately be used to make vaccines against other diseases, including malaria.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Africanews is owned by Euronews.
