The <em>Korea Herald<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.koreaherald.com\/view.php?ud=20220228000935\">described<\/a> Yoon as \u201cthe South Korean Trump,\u201d referring to former United States President Donald Trump, in a profile of the conservative politician on March 2. The newspaper offered several parallels between Yoon and Trump that may have contributed to their comparison, including the following:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote>\n<p>On top of using anti-China rhetoric, the two also like to speak to their base on social media and announce policies that read like slogans. For example, Yoon\u2019s \u201cAbolish the Gender Equality Ministry\u201d could be compared to Trump\u2019s \u201cBuild the Wall.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Yoon served as South Korea\u2019s prosecutor general from July 2019 to March 2021 under current leftist South Korean President Moon Jae-in. South Koreans elected Moon as their president in May 2017 after he successfully ran for the office as the candidate of South Korea\u2019s left-wing Democratic Party of Korea (DPK). Moon will finish his single, five-year term as president of South Korea on May 10, 2022, clearing the way for Yoon to succeed him in the office.<\/p>\n<p>Yonhap News Agency described the 2022 South Korean presidential election on March 9 \u2014 the day of the vote \u2014 as a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.yna.co.kr\/view\/AEN20220308006755315?section=national\/politics\">dead heat<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.yna.co.kr\/view\/AEN20220308006756315\">too close to call<\/a>\u201d hours before reporting Yoon\u2019s victory on March 10. Minutes earlier, the news agency <a href=\"https:\/\/en.yna.co.kr\/view\/AEN20220310000600315\">revealed<\/a> Yoon\u2019s opponent in the race, Lee Jae-myung, had \u201cconceded defeat.\u201d Lee ran for the presidency as the official nominee of the left-wing DPK.<\/p>\n<p>Lee\u2019s campaign manager, Song Young-gil, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2022\/03\/08\/70-year-old-youtuber-beats-head-south-korean-ruling-party-hammer\/\">attacked<\/a> by a man wielding a hammer during a campaign rally in Seoul on March 7. Song, who is also the DPK\u2019s chairman, suffered minor head injuries requiring stitches during the assault.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI was struck in the head from behind with a hammer, but luckily it missed fatal parts,\u201d Song <a href=\"http:\/\/www.koreaherald.com\/view.php?ud=20220308000472\">wrote<\/a> on his Facebook page on March 8 after being discharged from a Seoul hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince there is no brain hemorrhage, I will leave the hospital and will join the final campaign rallies,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Police arrested Song\u2019s attacker on March 7, identifying him as a 70-year-old man who ran a South Korean politics-focused YouTube page.<\/p>\n<p>South Korea\u2019s presidential election included early voting from March 4 to March 5. The early balloting drew a record-high turnout of voters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than 16 million, or 36.93 percent, of a total of some 44 million registered voters already cast their ballots in early voting Friday and Saturday [March 4-5],\u201d Yonhap <a href=\"https:\/\/en.yna.co.kr\/view\/AEN20220308006752315?section=national\/politics\">observed<\/a> on March 9.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe turnout marked the highest since the early voting system was introduced in 2014.
