Ron DeSantis is undeterred by Disney\u2019s criticism of the state\u2019s parental notification bill, the governor\u2019s press secretary told The Daily Wire Wednesday evening.<\/p>\n<p>Spokeswoman Christina Pushaw confirmed that Disney contacted the governor\u2019s office to speak with DeSantis, saying that this is \u201cthe first time we have heard from Disney regarding HB 1557.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe governor did take the call from Mr. Chapek,\u201d she said, referring to Disney CEO Bob Chapek. \u201cThe governor\u2019s position has not changed. No in-person meeting has been scheduled yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDisney is known as a family-friendly company that creates wholesome entertainment for kids,\u201d she continued. \u201cThe same Florida parents who take their families to Disney also support parental rights in education, because they do not want their young children exposed to inappropriate content about sex and gender theory at school.\u00a0We expect Mr. Chapek will carefully consider their concerns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chapek spoke out Wednesday in a company shareholder meeting about the bill, telling shareholders that he had called DeSantis on Wednesday morning to express Disney\u2019s \u201cdisappointment and concern,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/03\/09\/media\/dont-say-gay-bill-disney-chapek-desantis\/index.html\">according to CNN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Should the bill become law, Chapek said, it \u201ccould be used to unfairly target gay, lesbian, non-binary and transgender kids and families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe governor heard our concerns and agreed to meet with me and LGBTQ+ members of our senior team in Florida to discuss ways to address them,\u201d the Disney CEO said.<\/p>\n<p>Critics of the state\u2019s legislation have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/floridas-lgbtq-bill-is-being-wildly-misrepresented-here-are-the-facts\">most notably taken issue<\/a> with HB 1557\u2019s statement that\u00a0\u201cclassroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students in kindergarten are typically five years old, while third graders generally are eight or nine years old.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-wrapper\">\n<div id=\"pb-slot-incontent-2\" class=\"ad-unit\" data-google-query-id=\"CIitvJSNuvYCFZVCcgodvgoCCg\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/03\/07\/media\/disney-chapek-dont-say-gay-bill\/index.html\">News outlets like CNN<\/a> call <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myfloridahouse.gov\/Sections\/Documents\/loaddoc.aspx?FileName=_h1557e1.docx&#038;DocumentType=Bill&#038;BillNumber=1557&#038;Session=2022\">HB 1557<\/a> the \u201cDon\u2019t Say Gay Bill\u201d in copy, and critics of the legislation\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/02\/24\/1082969036\/florida-house-passes-controversial-measure-dubbed-the-dont-say-gay-bill-by-criti\">accuse<\/a> Republicans of endangering LGBTQ youth by outing them to their parents or preventing them from learning about their sexuality.<\/p>\n<p>Gov. DeSantis and his team have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/education-department-threatens-florida-over-hateful-school-lgbtq-bill\">repeatedly<\/a> pushed back on this framing.<\/p>\n<p>As recently as Monday, the governor tore into a reporter for misrepresenting the bill during a press briefing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCritics call it the Don\u2019t Say Gay bill,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/greg_price11\/status\/1500971287010852868\">said the reporter<\/a>, to which DeSantis <a href=\"https:\/\/dailywire.com\/news\/does-it-say-that-in-the-bill-ron-desantis-rebukes-reporter-for-pushing-dont-say-gay-narrative\/\">replied<\/a>, \u201cDoes it say that in the bill? I\u2019m asking you to tell me what is in the bill because you are pushing false narratives. It doesn\u2019t matter what critics say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt bans classroom instruction on sexual identity and gender orientation,\u201d said the reporter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor who?\u201d pressed the governor. \u201cFor grades Pre-K through 3. So 5-year-olds, 6-year-olds, 7-year-olds, and the idea that you wouldn\u2019t be honest about that and tell people what it actually says, it\u2019s why people don\u2019t trust people like you, because you peddle false narratives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nowhere in the legislation is the word \u201cgay\u201d mentioned, though the word \u201cparent\u201d is mentioned 32 times and the word \u201cparental\u201d is mentioned eight times. The legislation heavily focuses on parental notification and parental awareness of what children are being taught or exposed to in school.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cGovernor DeSantis has always been open to hearing from Floridians and having conversations about legislation \u2014 as long as those discussions are grounded in facts, not false media narratives,\u201d Pushaw told The Daily Wire on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone who has questions or concerns about the Parental Rights in Education bill is encouraged to read the bill, rather than the distorted coverage in mainstream media, which regurgitates false partisan talking points,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
