The episode shows how conservatives across the movement are attempting to navigate the political minefield that is discussing transgenderism, highlighting the consequences \u2014 intended or otherwise \u2014 of language choice.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cNo matter what one thinks of Lia\u2019s ability to swim with women <strong>her<\/strong> story deserves our compassion. It will be interesting to hear Lia\u2019s pov in 30 years,\u201d he tweeted on March 6, sharing a link to a <em>New York Post<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/03\/03\/transgender-swimmer-lia-thomas-says-i-belong-on-the-womens-team\/?utm_source=NYPTwitter&#038;utm_medium=SocialFlow&#038;utm_campaign=SocialFlow\">article<\/a> about<em> Sport\u2019s Illustrated\u2019s<\/em> exclusive interview with Thomas. [emphasis added].<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">No matter what one thinks of Lia\u2019s ability to swim with women her story deserves our compassion. It will be interesting to hear Lia\u2019s pov in 30 years. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/NLY9f6TO6I\">https:\/\/t.co\/NLY9f6TO6I<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Matt Schlapp (@mschlapp) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mschlapp\/status\/1500609348854288385?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 6, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>For background, Lia Thomas (formerly known as Will) is a man who believes he is a woman and has competed on the school\u2019s men\u2019s swim team for nearly three years. \u201cLia\u201d has since joined the UPenn women\u2019s team despite\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/health\/2022\/02\/08\/ivy-league-oks-lia-thomas-for-swimming-championships\/\">numerous complaints<\/a> from inside and outside the university and has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/sports\/2022\/02\/18\/trans-swimmer-lia-thomas-destroys-pool-record-beats-competition-by-more-than-7-seconds\/\">smashing records<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 many unlikely to be broken by female competitors.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>At least 16 Ivy League female swimmers say they have been afraid to publicly speak out against the pro-transgender university officials who are helping Thomas swim in their competitions, according to the <em>Washington Post<\/em>. Thomas, who has not undergone any surgical procedures to \u201ctransition\u201d and is allegedly attracted to women sexually, also has reportedly walked around the locker rooms with his male genitalia exposed, making his female teammates uncomfortable, the <em>Daily Mail<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/sports\/2022\/01\/28\/teammates-uncomfortable-changing-locker-room-trans-swimmer\/\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Schlapp, who worked as\u00a0White House director for political affairs under President George W. Bush and has led the ACU, which has hosted CPAC for several years, defended his original post on Tuesday via Twitter after receiving pushback, calling it a \u201cfalse controversy,\u201d and saying he does not \u201cwish to normalize it but simply deal w it w compassion [sic]. He added that\u00a0conservatives should \u201cdefend girls sports against competing w men aggressively but in the end remember that all people deserve respect.\u201d [sic]\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Jenna all I am saying is in the end trans people deserve our love and compassion. You can show kindness without suspending reality. #txlege,\u201d wrote\u00a0Matt Schaefer, a\u00a0member of the State of Texas House of Representatives.<\/p>\n<p>In an exclusive interview with Breitbart News via phone on Tuesday, Schlapp cordially addressed the flurry of online contention following his post, calling Twitter a \u201cdangerous vehicle, oftentimes because you can only use so many characters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople can misinterpret, and if anybody misinterpreted CPAC\u2019s commitment to ending the war and confronting the war on gender, keeping this whole idea of gender confusion out of our classrooms and doing everything we can to protect girls and women\u2019s sports, then that\u2019s unfortunate, and I\u2019d like to clarify the fact that I think we\u2019re leading voice and all that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Schlapp explained his intentions for tweeting in favor of \u201ccompassion\u201d for Thomas \u2014 he said the specific part of the article that quoted Thomas\u2019 father caused him to sympathize with what the family has gone through during Thomas\u2019 \u201ctransition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The line from the story goes:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>We will do everything and anything we need to do to have Lia be a part of this family,\u201d Thomas\u2019 father, Bob, told Sports Illustrated. \u201cWe were not going to lose her.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAs the father of five \u2014 and I think parents everywhere can feel compassion toward the agony that must happen in a family when this occurs,\u201d Schlapp explained. \u201cAnd so the initial tweet was just to express sympathy for people not only who are confronting gender confusion, but their parents and their siblings \u2014 because if, you know, if you look at the stories around this, there\u2019s a lot of sadness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Breitbart News asked Schlapp why he referred to Thomas as \u201cher\u201d in his tweet and whether he intends to continue referring to Thomas by his \u201cpreferred pronouns.\u201d The first time, Breitbart News asked verbatim: \u201cDo you think using someone\u2019s preferred pronouns constitutes sympathy and compassion in your view?\u201d Schlapp did not directly answer the question about pronouns but affirmed his position on men in women\u2019s sports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, let me just be clear. I think that you can\u2019t alter your gender. You can have surgeries, you can change your physical appearance, but your gender is immutable,\u201d he answered. \u201cAnd I believe that your gender should determine whether or not you compete in women\u2019s sports, and a biological male should not compete in those meets and those activities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we should be fierce in our defense of women\u2019s sports and biological men should not be allowed to compete in those activities,\u201d he continued when asked whether he believes conservatives can have sympathy for transgendered individuals while also supporting sex-exclusive sports teams. \u201cBut at the same time, we should treat people with decency, and we try to do that every day at CPAC, and we\u2019re going to keep doing that.\u201d<\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Breitbart News asked Schlapp if, going forward, he is going to refer to Lia Thomas as a \u201cher.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Schlapp did not answer the question directly.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>\u201cI believe that you can\u2019t change your biology no matter what surgery you get\u2026 you can\u2019t change your gender \u2014 it\u2019s immutable,\u201d he said in response. \u201cI don\u2019t believe that because you\u2019re an athlete and you believe you have transitioned to a new gender that that should allow you or qualify you to compete against women in their sports. And I think we have to fight that hard.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIncluding the way we address them as \u2018he\u2019 or \u2018her\u2019 or? \u2014\u201d Breitbart News pressed.<\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p><span class=\"\">Schlapp again<\/span><span><span>\u00a0did not directly answer the question about pronouns and (without apparently realizing it)<\/span><\/span><span><span class=\"\"><span>\u00a0called Thomas \u201cshe\u201d again.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s a very fair question, and I think for purposes of the law and for purposes of status as athletes, what they prefer to be called is not as relevant as what their gender actually is,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd that\u2019s what should determine what competition they compete in. And she should compete with the men. Wait, you have got me caught there \u2014 Lia should compete with the men.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Schlapp released a statement on his Twitter before Breitbart News published this interview, reaffirming that CPAC believes \u201cin fiercely defending girls and women\u2019s sports at every level.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"und\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/lrOjikI4BV\">pic.twitter.com\/lrOjikI4BV<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Matt Schlapp (@mschlapp) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mschlapp\/status\/1501325442812297216?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 8, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe left\u2019s war on gender must be confronted and CPAC will continue to do just that. And we will continue to demonstrate decency to all those involved,\u201d the statement reads in part.<\/p>\n<p>Breitbart News also reached out to Natasha Chart, who worked in a radical feminist organization for years and is a critic of the transgender movement. Chart said she believes Schlapp\u2019s compassion may be \u201ca little misplaced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cEvery person deserves compassion for their struggles. But it really astonishes me how much a small handful of men [have] been able to completely take the spotlight away from what\u2019s really their cruelty to women to engender support from other men,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Chart continued: \u201cHe\u2019s talking about looking with compassion on a man who is stealing sports titles from women, who is with the full sanction and authority of school officials, who is exposing young women in their locker room to male nudity when we\u2019ve just had a very large and you know, emotionally shattering series of sex abuse scandals in the sporting world where young women were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/sports\/2021\/09\/15\/fbi-agent-fired-after-failing-to-properly-investigate-abuse-claims-against-larry-nassar\/\">silenced for years<\/a> by authorities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span>Chart noted that people are often dangerously duped into using \u201cpreferred pronouns\u201d because doing so is seen as \u201cpro-social\u201d and \u201cgenerous.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThere are a lot of people who want to use what they call preferred pronouns or inaccurate pronouns in order to be kind, and I understand the impulse to be kind. It\u2019s pro-social. It\u2019s generous. You want to make everyone feel respected,\u201d she said. \u201cBut in this situation, you have to look at what\u2019s happening and whether it\u2019s kind in this situation to essentially support a social fiction \u2014 a lie.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>She continued: \u201c<\/span>If Lia Thomas is a \u2018she,\u2019 what\u2019s the problem? What\u2019s the problem that he changes with the women. If he\u2019s \u2018she,\u2019 what\u2019s the problem that he competes with the women. You can\u2019t clearly express the issue if you can\u2019t use accurate words about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span>Additionally, Breitbart News asked Schlapp for comment on a <a href=\"https:\/\/thenationalpulse.com\/2022\/03\/08\/revealed-matt-schlapps-cpac-took-six-figure-social-action-donation-from-soros-linked-dark-money-network\/\">recent investigation<\/a> from <em>The National Pulse<\/em>,\u00a0which found that\u00a0the ACU, which hosts CPAC, took a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/563412520\/NVF-2020-Public-Disclosure-Copy-1\">$183,250 grant<\/a>\u00a0in 2020 from a \u201cleading left-wing fund\u201d called the New Venture Fund for \u201ccivil rights, social action, [and] advocacy.\u201d According to the report, which cited the <em>Atlantic<\/em> magazine, the New Venture Fund is a\u00a0<\/span><span>\u201cMassive Progressive Dark-Money Group\u201d that has ties to billionaire Democrat megadonor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/02\/27\/george-soros-u-s-must-do-whatever-possible-back-ukraine-against-russia\/\">George Soros<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Schlapp did not confirm<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/span><span>himself whether the organization gave ACU money, though he said he was \u201chappy to check.\u201d He did, however say that organizations do not have influence over CPAC and the ACU just because they make a donation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThat\u2019s one of the good things about when a conservative organization succeeds is you are no longer reliant on any particular donor or donors generally because it\u2019s coming from all over the country,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd the thing I\u2019m the most proud about is it\u2019s coming in small amounts as well, which demonstrates grass roots success\u2026.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>He added that if left-wing donors wanted to \u201cweaken our position\u201d on keeping men out of girls\u2019 sports, \u201cthey are failing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSo they should ask for a refund, cause we\u2019re not doing a very good job of doing their bidding,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Katherine Hamilton is a political reporter for Breitbart News.
