Joyce Beatty (D-OH) and Rep. Brenda Lawrence (D-MI) wrote the commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) on Monday to demand an investigation into the \u201ccorruption\u201d in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) \u2014 which presents the Golden Globe Awards \u2014 according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/congresswomen-irs-investigation-hfpa\/\">letter obtained<\/a> by The Wrap.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe recently became aware of the longstanding and questionable business practices exercised by the leadership of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA),\u201d the letter read.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>The Congresswomen went on to call into question the\u00a0HFPA\u2019s tax exempt status:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>For more than a year, entertainment and national media outlets have detailed the seemingly corrupt\u00a0and unacceptable deal making patterns of HFPA raising questions whether the organization solely responsible for awarding the once coveted Golden Globe Award is meeting its IRS section 501(C)(3) demands.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe believe at minimum, HFPA\u2019s current leadership has colluded to benefit themselves, either directly or indirectly and therefore violated the IRS statute,\u201d the letter continued.<\/p>\n<p>According to its tax returns, the HFPA is a 501(c)(6), which is similar to a 501(c)(3) in that the organization is exempt from taxes, but is generally used for groups such as trade associations that promote the common business of its members, reports TheWrap.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The letter also pointed out the HFPA\u2019s \u201cfailure to embrace robust diversity and inclusion practices that we are now seeing being implemented in Hollywood and across all business and government sectors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time the\u00a0HFPA has been publicly\u00a0scrutinized.<\/p>\n<p>In May of last year, actress Scarlett Johansson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/entertainment\/2021\/05\/09\/actress-scarlett-johansson-calls-out-golden-globes-org-hfpa-for-sexist-questions-and-remarks\/\">called out<\/a> the HFPA, saying she has faced \u201csexist questions\u201d at press conferences. The actress also urged the entertainment industry to \u201ctake a step back\u201d from the HFPA.<\/p>\n<p>Last year,\u00a0the HFPA\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/news\/hfpa-commits-to-having-13-percent-black-membership\/\">committed<\/a> to having 13 percent black membership after it was criticized for not having a black journalist among its members, and after 100 PR firms sent a letter demanding the organization make changes.<\/p>\n<p>By that summer, two members of the HFPA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/entertainment\/2021\/06\/19\/golden-globes-in-tatters-as-two-hfpa-members-resign-over-corruption-and-verbal-abuse\/\">resigned<\/a>, saying the organization is \u201ca toxic place,\u201d with a culture one \u201cinsulation, silence, fear of retribution, self-dealing, corruption and verbal abuse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>You can follow Alana\u00a0Mastrangelo on\u00a0<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ARmastrangelo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">Facebook<\/a>\u00a0and Twitter at\u00a0<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ARmastrangelo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">@ARmastrangelo<\/a>, and on\u00a0<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/alanamastrangelo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">Instagram<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Congressional Black Caucus members Rep.
