Biden responded to some of that political pressure Tuesday <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/08\/joe-biden-ban-russian-oil-invasion-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">when he announced<\/a> that the United States would no longer be purchasing <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/08\/shell-russian-crude-oil-energy-ukraine-sanctions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Russian oil and gas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/poll.qu.edu\/poll-release?releaseid=3838\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Quinnipiac poll<\/a> released Monday found that 56% of respondents said that the steps taken by Biden so far to punish Russia for invading Ukraine were not strong enough, with only 30% saying they were sufficient. In the same poll, Americans approved of banning the import of Russian energy by a margin of 71%-22%, even if it leads to higher gas prices.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s just the move Biden announced Tuesday, the same day that gas prices <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/07\/gasoline-prices-all-time-high-russia-white-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reached an all-time record high<\/a> of $4.14, according to AAA, surpassing levels hit during the 2008-2009 financial crisis. <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/03\/08\/how-much-oil-does-us-import-from-russia-what-biden-ban-means\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nearly 10%<\/a> of America\u2019s imported energy comes from Russia, meaning prices could continue to rise due to the ban.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.cdn.yougov.com\/omtmdczu48\/econToplines.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A separate poll<\/a> taken by The Economist and YouGov between Feb. 26 and March 1 found that only 11% of Americans would not impose additional sanctions on Russia. 40% said they supported more sanctions even if it resulted in higher gas prices. 49% of Americans said the government\u2019s response to Russia should be tougher, compared to only 28% who said it was about right or should be softer.<\/p>\n<p>Biden was delayed in taking some actions that Americans broadly approved of, such as sanctioning Putin directly. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JacquiHeinrich\/status\/1501189231040991237\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">multiple reports<\/a>, the White House also stepped in to nix a bipartisan plan in Congress to ban the import of Russian energy, in order to not be seen as leading from behind on the issue. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/08\/joe-biden-cant-do-much-rising-gas-prices-russia-inflation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Biden Says He \u2018Can\u2019t Do Much Right Now\u2019 About Rising Gas Prices)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Members from both parties expressed frustration that they spent the whole weekend working in a bipartisan fashion only to get rolled by the WH.<\/p>\n<p>**and as I type this, Reuters reports a WH announcement to ban Russian oil is imminent.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Jacqui Heinrich (@JacquiHeinrich) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JacquiHeinrich\/status\/1501189240796983301?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 8, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/russia-ukraine-biden-state-of-the-union-opinion-poll-2022-02-29\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A CBS poll<\/a> released March 1 found that Biden\u2019s approval rating on the Ukraine crisis is heavily underwater with independents. On the whole, only 41% of Americans approved of how he\u2019s handled the situation. Predictably, Democrats approved 71%-29% and Republicans disapproved 83%-17%. But among independents, only 35% approved and 65% disapproved.<\/p>\n<p>On the campaign trail, Biden positioned himself as the choice that would be harder on Russia and Putin after Democrats for years accused former President Donald Trump of colluding with the Russian government to advance his own personal interests. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Biden tweeted<\/a> in Feb. 2020 that Putin \u201cdoesn\u2019t want me to be President.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Vladimir Putin doesn\u2019t want me to be President. The Russian stock market <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/livecoverage\/russia-ukraine-latest-news-2022-03-08\/card\/ruble-will-trade-but-russia-s-stock-market-to-remain-closed-wednesday-D04iUWo46VyQEGFNqmut\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">has been closed<\/a> for a week and a half and counting, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/currency\/rubusd?mod=mw_quote_switch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">value of the ruble<\/a> has plummeted more than 40% in the past month.<\/p>\n<p>More hawkish options remain available to Biden, and the next one the White House and its NATO allies may consider is the institution of a no-fly zone over Ukrainian airspace. Initially dismissed by many pundits, calls for such a policy have grown louder from defense experts and American politicians in recent days. Ukrainian President <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/08\/i-am-not-afraid-of-anyone-ukrainian-president-reveals-location\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Volodymyr Zelenskyy<\/a> has repeatedly asked the west to secure Ukrainian airspace.<\/p>\n<p>White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki has consistently reiterated that a no-fly zone would be a bad idea. Such a policy would require NATO aircraft to shoot down Russian planes in the event they fly over Ukraine, potentially leading to a wider, more destructive conflict between Moscow, Washington and Europe. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/07\/republicans-democrats-poll-united-states-invasion-russia-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Poll: Republicans And Independents Would Defend America If Invaded \u2014 Dems Say They Would Flee)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But the American people are coming around to the idea that the Biden team is hesitant to broach. A new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/exclusive-americans-broadly-support-ukraine-no-fly-zone-russia-oil-ban-poll-2022-03-04\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reuters-IPSOS poll<\/a> released Friday found that 74% of Americans supported instituting a no-fly zone enforced by NATO over Ukraine. Majorities of both Republicans and Democrats were in favor of the policy. The question\u2019s wording did not fully explain the possible implications of the policy.<\/p>\n<p>Thus far, the war in Ukraine has claimed thousands of lives between the two sides, including <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/08\/2-million-refugees-flee-ukraine-un\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">many civilians<\/a>.
