as a result of war, sanctions cutting supply  <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/U9wyutmO7A\">https:\/\/t.co\/U9wyutmO7A<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Breitbart London (@BreitbartLondon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BreitbartLondon\/status\/1499372770815139842?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 3, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Svein Tore Holsether is not the only person putting forward a bleak picture of future food security, however.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Scannell \u2014 a senior figure in the EU\u2019s Agriculture Department \u2014 has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2022\/03\/03\/eu-official-warns-suffering-ahead-as-european-farmers-lose-access-to-ukrainian-animal-feed\/\">said<\/a> that the knock-on effects of the war in Ukraine will be \u201cpainful\u201d for Europe\u2019s Agri-Food sector, with a lot of the bloc\u2019s fertiliser and animal feed being sourced from either Russia or Ukraine.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>However, the EU bureaucrat was convinced that the European bloc would be able to get through the crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe consequences of this Russian aggression will have a major impact on our agri-food sector, and it will be painful, but, we have to suffer that pain,\u201d Scannell said, noting that \u201cUkrainians are paying with their lives, not in Euros\u201d, and so the cost did not seem so steep for the EU within that context.<\/p>\n<p>Local politicians within the EU appear to have also grown increasingly concerned regarding the possibility of future shortages.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Hungarian Prime Minister\u00a0Viktor Orb\u00e1n has <a href=\"https:\/\/abouthungary.hu\/blog\/pm-orban-at-farmers-congress-the-most-important-thing-is-to-keep-hungary-out-of-this-war\">said<\/a> his country must stay out of the conflict in Ukraine, noting the country\u2019s reliance on Russian imports, while his government\u2019s agriculture minister has <a href=\"https:\/\/abouthungary.hu\/news-in-brief\/ministry-of-agriculture-domestic-food-supply-must-be-protected\">emphasised<\/a> that the country\u2019s food supply must be protected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe condemn the war, especially that it is here in our neighborhood; we say no to violence, we stand together with our allies, and all this is important, but the most important thing is that Hungary should stay out of this war conflict,\u201d Orb\u00e1n is reported as saying.<\/p>\n<p>Ireland also appears to be on a war footing in regards to the crisis, with the country\u2019s minister of agriculture <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/politics\/minister-to-ask-irish-farmers-to-grow-grain-due-to-wartime-supply-issues-1.4819712\">confirming<\/a> that he will be asking farmers to increase grain production in the hopes of combatting supply shortages, mirroring government policy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/news\/politics\/2022\/0305\/1284650-mcconalogue-ukraine-farming\/\">implemented<\/a> within the country during the Second World War.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Irish Farmers\u2019 Association has warned officials against taking top-down measures without consulting farmers first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would be very unwise of the Government to make any decisions on this before engaging fully with farmers,\u201d a spokesman for the organisation said. \u201cIrish farming is very different than it was in the 1940s.
