that comprise the intelligence-sharing alliance \u2014 are in agreement that the Russian government\u2019s ability to use those tools must end. <\/p>\n<div class=\"Enhancement\">\n<div class=\"Enhancement-item\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cAG Garland, alongside other justice ministers of the Five Country Ministerial, called on Interpol and its Exec Committee to decide this week on the immediate suspension of Russia&#8217;s access to its systems,\u201d Anthony Coley, the director of public affairs at the Justice Department, <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AnthonyColeyDOJ\/status\/1500617089962418177\">said<\/a> Sunday night. <\/p>\n<p>Priti Patel, Britain&#8217;s home secretary, <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/pritipatel\/status\/1500585311646232580\">said<\/a> that she and the other Five Eyes partners had <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/pritipatel\/status\/1500585313625948161\">called upon<\/a> Interpol to deny Russia\u2019s continued access to Interpol\u2019s law enforcement databases and other systems, contending that \u201cRussia\u2019s actions are a direct threat to the safety of individuals and to international law enforcement cooperation.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Interpol\u2019s website <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.interpol.int\/en\/Who-we-are\/Member-countries\/Europe\/RUSSIA\">says<\/a> the organization&#8217;s National Central Bureau in Moscow deals with \u201cidentifying, investigating, and preventing serious crime across Europe and Asia\u201d and that its \u201cglobal police cooperation activities are centered on Russia\u2019s crime areas of priority concern,\u201d including terrorism, organized crime, \u201cand the international fugitive investigations these generate.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>An <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.interpol.int\/en\/How-we-work\/Notices\/View-Red-Notices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Interpol Red Notice<\/a> \u201cis a request to law enforcement worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Russia has been accused of abusing the Red Notice system in the past. <\/p>\n<p><b><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/ccp-internal-police-leader-elected-to-interpol-executive-committee-despite-international-outcry\">CCP INTERNAL POLICE LEADER ELECTED TO INTERPOL EXEC COMMITTEE DESPITE INTERNATIONAL OUTCRY<\/a><\/b> <\/p>\n<p>The Kremlin has repeatedly <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-russia-browder\/russia-asks-interpol-to-arrest-kremlin-critic-bill-browder-again-letter-idUSKCN1RL0PY\">asked<\/a> Interpol to arrest businessman Bill Browder, the head of Hermitage Capital and a Putin critic who has championed the <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/monkey-cage\/wp\/2018\/10\/12\/what-is-the-global-magnitsky-act-and-why-are-u-s-senators-invoking-this-on-saudi-arabia\/\">Magnitsky Act<\/a><\/u>, named for his tax lawyer and <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/international\/archive\/2017\/07\/magnitsky-act-kremlin\/535044\/\">corruption whistleblower<\/a><\/u> Sergei Magnitsky, who died in a Russian prison in 2009 after his investigation allegedly uncovered hundreds of millions of dollars of tax fraud implicating Russian officials. Browder was sentenced in absentia by a Russian court for crimes he denies committing. <\/p>\n<p>Interpol wrote to Browder\u2019s lawyers in 2019 that \u201cthe NCB of Russia has authorized the Commission to disclose to you its wish to request police cooperation for your client through an INTERPOL diffusion to arrest.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Interpol has not carried out Russia\u2019s arrest requests. <\/p>\n<p>Republican Sen. Roger Wicker <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.csce.gov\/international-impact\/press-and-media\/statements\/authoritarian-abuse-interpol\">warned<\/a> in November that Russia \u2014 as well as China, Turkey, and Venezuela \u2014 \u201chave routinely misused Interpol to oppress their critics.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe case of Bill Browder, a free critic of the Putin regime and advocate for the Magnitsky Act, is probably the most well-known example of such abuse,\u201d Wicker said. \u201cVladimir Putin has issued no fewer than eight INTERPOL diffusions seeking to have Bill Browder extradited, none of which thankfully have been obeyed.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Browder has also <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/book-ties-russian-intel-linked-lawyer-fusion-gps\">alleged<\/a> that the opposition firm Fusion GPS acted as an agent for Russian interests when Putin tried to combat the Magnitsky Act and its sanctions on Russian officials. <\/p>\n<p>Concerns abound that China has also <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/gop-and-exiled-activists-fight-chinese-push-to-join-interpol-leadership\">exerted<\/a> undue influence over Interpol.
