In short, the devices hack themselves through an attack nicknamed \u201cAlexa vs. Alexa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ars Technica <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/information-technology\/2022\/03\/attackers-can-force-amazon-echos-to-hack-themselves-with-self-issued-commands\/\">reports<\/a> that researchers have developed a new method to take control of Amazon Echo smart speakers. The vulnerability was discovered by researchers from\u00a0Royal Holloway University in London and Italy\u2019s University of Catania.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The researchers have dubbed the vulnerability \u201cAvA\u201d for \u201cAlexa vs. Alexa.\u201d The attack requires only a few seconds of a hacker being in close proximity to the Echo device. The hacker can then state a voice command connecting the Echo to the hacker\u2019s Bluetooth-enabled device. Once this device is within radio range of the Echo, the attacker can issue commands.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/2202.08619.pdf\">paper<\/a> that the attack\u00a0\u201cis the first to exploit the vulnerability of self-issuing arbitrary commands on Echo devices, allowing an attacker to control them for a prolonged amount of time.\u201d The paper added:\u00a0\u201cWith this work, we remove the necessity of having an external speaker near the target device, increasing the overall likelihood of the attack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another variation of the attack used a hijacked radio station to generate the self-issued commands, but this attack appears to have been patched by Amazon.
