The rare, in-person meeting with Venezuelan officials represented the highest-level visit to the authoritarian-run nation in years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt does seem like there\u2019s a potential for things to shift, I think the question is what the U.S. is going to get in exchange,\u201d Geoff Ramsey, the Venezuela director at the Washington Office on Latin America, told the Post. \u201cIt\u2019s very unlikely that senior Biden officials would go to Caracas and meet with Maduro and be able to sell a major policy shift like this if they were to come home empty-handed.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/07\/stock-market-crude-oil-white-house-energy-sanctions\/\">(RELATED: Stock Market Sinks, Oil Tops $130 As West Considers Russian Energy Sanctions)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The surprise meeting occurred as Russia pressed forward with its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/07\/stock-market-crude-oil-white-house-energy-sanctions\/\">injecting uncertainty<\/a> into global energy markets. Crude oil prices worldwide have surged in recent weeks as investors have balked at supply uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of bicameral Republican and Democratic lawmakers, meanwhile, have pushed the Biden administration to ban Russian oil imports. (Federico Parra\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>However, experts doubted whether a policy replacing Russian oil with Venezuelan supply would have an easing effect on pump prices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis won\u2019t help ease the pain at the pump for American consumers,\u201d Francisco Monaldi, the director of the Rice University Baker Institute\u2019s Latin America Energy Program, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/u-s-officials-meet-with-regime-in-venezuela-to-discuss-oil-exports-to-replace-russias-11646591752\">told<\/a> The Wall Street Journal.<\/p>\n<p>Monaldi added that Venezuela\u2019s production would be a \u201cdrop in the bucket in the world oil market,\u201d according to the WSJ.<\/p>\n<p>While the U.S. has pursued an aggressive sanctions regime against Venezuela for more than 15 years, in 2019, the Trump administration imposed a fresh swath of restrictions on the South American nation\u2019s oil industry to renew pressure on President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, a 2021 report from the Congressional Research Service <a href=\"https:\/\/sgp.fas.org\/crs\/row\/IF10715.pdf\">showed<\/a>. Trump administration White House officials <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2019\/02\/22\/venezuela-oil-nicolas-maduro\/\">said<\/a> the sanctions would reduce Venezuela\u2019s oil exports by $11 billion.<\/p>\n<p>As a result of the sanctions, the U.S. hasn\u2019t imported oil from Venezuela since May 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/dnav\/pet\/pet_move_neti_a_EP00_IMN_mbblpd_m.htm\">according<\/a> to government data.
