Version: 4.0.47--><div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dw-wp-production.imgix.net\/2022\/03\/Olaf-Scholz.jpg?w=1200&#038;h=800&#038;ixlib=react-9.3.0\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/div>\n<p>As much of the Western world debates how best to beat back Russia\u2019s military invasion of Ukraine without escalating the conflict to World War III involving troops from NATO countries, many have speculated that hitting Russian President Vladimir Putin in the proverbial economic jugular \u2014 Russian energy exports \u2014\u00a0 with heavy sanctions would drastically limit the motherland\u2019s ability to fund the war.<\/p>\n<p>Yet on Monday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz put the kibosh on that idea for the European Union, saying that the continent \u2014 especially Germany \u2014 relies on Russian energy for its way of life and cannot afford such sanctions because of the disruption it would bring to the economy and national security.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEurope has deliberately exempted energy supplies from Russia from sanctions,\u201d Scholz said in a statement, the Agence France-Presse <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moneycontrol.com\/news\/world\/russian-energy-imports-essential-to-europeans-daily-lives-olaf-scholz-8203501.html\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSupplying Europe with energy for heat generation, mobility, electricity supply and industry cannot be secured in any other way at the moment,\u201d Scholz <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/articles\/germanys-scholz-defends-exemption-of-russian-energy-from-eu-sanctions\">continued<\/a>. \u201cIt is therefore of essential importance for the provision of public services and the daily lives of our citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe federal government has been for months working urgently with its partners in the European Union and beyond to develop alternatives to Russian energy,\u201d Scholz added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis cannot be done overnight,\u201d the German leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-03-07\/ukraine-update-oil-surges-as-u-s-mulls-banning-russian-imports\">noted<\/a>. \u201cThat is why it is a conscious decision on our part to continue the activities of business enterprises in the area of energy supply with Russia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The announcement comes as President Joe Biden is reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/price-of-oil-per-barrel-doubles-from-what-it-cost-a-few-months-ago\">considering an embargo of Russian oil<\/a> in the United States, while also apparently floating the idea of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/biden-saudi-trip-oil-b7a91070-8045-4155-9120-a35d59fd7603.html\">asking<\/a> Saudi Arabia and Venezuela to ramp up their production <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/buttigieg-slammed-saying-all-options-on-table-oil-iran\">while leaving open the possibility<\/a> of buying oil from Iran.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, The Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/price-of-oil-per-barrel-doubles-from-what-it-cost-a-few-months-ago\">reported<\/a> that gas in the U.S. is currently averaging $4.00 a gallon. Others have reported that cutting off America\u2019s import of Russian oil would only make that cost go higher without an alternative supply of oil:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>The national average price for gas jumped to $4 per gallon over the weekend for the first time since 2008 as prices continue to worsen during the Biden-era.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAs of Sunday afternoon, the national average of a regular gallon of gas was $4.009, according to AAA,\u201d USA Today reported. \u201cThat\u2019s up 8 cents from Saturday and up 40 cents from last week. The U.S. hit the $4 national average a day earlier than analysts expected.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Of course, many have argued that increasing America\u2019s oil production would be a better move than relying on foreign countries \u2014 especially ones with hostilities like Venezuela, Iran, and a less-than-solid relationship with Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n<p>In response to already high gas prices, even electric vehicle maker and billionaire Elon Musk recognized that America should ramp up its oil output, The Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/price-of-oil-per-barrel-doubles-from-what-it-cost-a-few-months-ago\">noted<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/elon-musk-pushes-energy-policy-for-u-s-that-would-negatively-affect-his-own-company-extraordinary-times-demand-extraordinary-measures\">said<\/a>\u00a0late last week that he supported increasing domestic oil and gas drilling to offset energy problems that the U.S. is facing due to policies from the Biden administration and the war in Europe.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHate to say it, but we need to increase oil &#038; gas output immediately.
