Many fans are excited by the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is uniting on one platform, while some leading family entertainment advocates question the move.<\/p>\n<p>Years before Disney\u2019s own streaming plans took shape, in 2015 their Marvel division partnered with Netflix to take a group of lesser-known, street-level heroes (\u201cthe Defenders\u201d) from past comics and produce shows for adult viewers that push the boundaries of superhero TV.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><\/figure>\n<p>Their first entry, \u201cDaredevil,\u201d about a lawyer-turned-vigilante whose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theamericanconservative.com\/birzer\/the-brilliant-and-profoundly-catholic-daredevil\/\">Catholic faith<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/relevantmagazine.com\/culture\/daredevil-is-what-happens-when-a-tv-show-takes-faith-seriously\/\">motivates<\/a> his quest for justice, in particular gained a loyal following over three seasons.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s smart, sophisticated, and delivers big-screen action on a small screen,\u201d said Christian Toto, founder of the entertainment website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/\">Hollywood in Toto<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2022\/feb\/9\/netflix-reboots-masters-universe-cowboy-bebop-irk-\/\">author of<\/a> \u201cVirtue Bombs: How Hollywood Got Woke and Lost Its Soul.\u201d \u201c\u2018Daredevil\u2019 is one of the MCU\u2019s more complex heroes, and that makes for compelling content. Seeing these shows shift to Disney Plus is a marketing coup.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet Melissa Henson, program director at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parentstv.org\/\">Parents Television and Media Council<\/a> (PTC) based in Hollywood, called it \u201coff-brand\u201d for these edgy series to make the leap from Netflix to Disney Plus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s certainly counter to how most parents perceive Disney Plus,\u201d she said in an interview. \u201cOut of the gate, Disney Plus branded itself as: \u2018Everything on here, you can be comfortable sitting down and watching these shows and films with your kids.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Signaling their change in brand identity, Disney\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/whatsondisneyplus.com\/marvel-live-action-series-and-updated-parental-controls-in-the-u-s-coming-to-disney\/\">press release<\/a> about \u201cThe Defenders\u201d notes subscribers will have to opt in to these new titles. Still, for families with young kids at home, the move presents new challenges to navigate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"hyper-violent-shows-clash-with-family-marketed-platform\">Hyper-Violent Shows Clash with Family-Marketed Platform\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Michael Foust, an entertainment writer for Crosswalk, has sampled all the top streaming services and become an expert on the best options for families. Raising four kids in rural Illinois, he and his wife seek to guard their kids from explicit content as they enjoy a weekly family movie night.<\/p>\n<p>No streaming service should be used as a babysitter, he and parents\u2019 advocates are quick to note. But with a trusted family brand like Disney, parents \u201cdon\u2019t constantly worry about kids stumbling upon something that conflicts with your values,\u201d Foust said in an interview.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That changed for him recently, after his nine-year-old watched a promoted show without a parent\u2019s permission. \u201cWe actually deleted Disney Plus off of our Roku (TV device) for several weeks,\u201d he said, preferring not to disclose the specific adult animation title. \u201cWe have Disney Plus back now, but with parental controls on. I think that\u2019s a lesson for every parent.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>These conflicts arise from confusion about genres, he says. \u201cThe problem is kids automatically believe animated shows and superhero films are kid-friendly. Companies like McDonald\u2019s are partly to blame for that. One of my boys, four years old at the time, got a Happy Meal and started playing with toys promoting \u2018Avengers: Endgame.\u2019 We wouldn\u2019t let him see that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marvel has become a cornerstone of Disney\u2019s streaming strategy, which is why in late 2018 Netflix\u2019s \u201cDaredevil\u201d and companion series were abruptly canceled as Disney began a process of pulling Marvel content from other platforms. Last year, Disney Plus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familytheater.org\/blog\/wandavision-marvel-falcon-winter-soldier-disney-plus\">premiered<\/a> five original Marvel series. All were rated either TV-PG or TV-14, usually featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/12\/03\/marvels-street-level-hawkeye-series-delivers-comical-culprits-with-a-christmas-flair\/\">bloodless battles<\/a> rather than the brutal decapitations and grisly violence seen on Marvel Netflix shows.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rolling out this slate of TV-MA series signals a sea-change, bringing Disney Plus closer to Netflix. \u201cThese shows really increase the violence, along with adding innuendo and sexual content,\u201d says Henson. \u201cThis is a dramatic departure. It\u2019s puzzling why these edgy shows aren\u2019t heading to Hulu instead, which is known for adult-targeted content.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For some observers, it\u2019s a welcome shift. From R-rated \u201cJoker\u201d to Prime Video\u2019s \u201cThe Boys,\u201d a years-long trend of hyper-violent comic adaptations has rejected formulaic storytelling.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Toto praises \u201cDaredevil\u201d as \u201ca gritty show for grown-ups, no doubt.\u201d He adds: \u201cIt also has a real-world feel that some MCU shows lack. Like the \u2018Dark Knight\u2019 trilogy, you can imagine Daredevil existing in our current times.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"disney-plus-ally-or-antagonist-to-parents\">Disney Plus: Ally Or Antagonist to Parents?<\/h2>\n<p>Considering Disney Plus has <a href=\"https:\/\/dejaview.news\/comparing-streaming-services\/\">lagged behind<\/a> streaming competitors in building up its library, the sudden influx of series makes sense. Families seeking a show within existing Marvel rating boundaries \u2014 some coarse language and non-gory violence in TV-14 territory at worst \u2014 should note they\u2019re also adding ABC drama \u201cAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D.\u201d on March 16.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Although known as critics, Parents Television and Media Council has often <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/04\/27\/streaming-services-like-disney-and-netflix-market-themselves-as-family-friendly-but-are-they-really\/\">praised<\/a> Disney Plus as \u201cmostly family-friendly,\u201d according to Henson. \u201cThey\u2019ve created a lot of original shows in the Star Wars franchise, from \u2018The Mandalorian\u2019 to animated titles, that are really on-brand. I think it would be a mistake for them to depart from what has drawn many people to their streamer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For others, it was a foregone conclusion that Disney Plus would eventually be home to all Marvel titles. Despite the explicit nature of \u201cThe Defenders\u201d shows, Toto says, \u201cIt adds gravitas to what Disney is trying to build with their platform.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Justifying explicit content in superhero stories, Toto points to \u201cX-Men\u201d spin-off \u201cLogan,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2017\/03\/03\/logan-hands-best-superhero-movie-ever-made\/\">with its themes<\/a> of pain and redemption. \u201cIt proved an R-rating wasn\u2019t just about more blood being spilled but mature themes that aren\u2019t always suitable for young minds,\u201d he said. \u201cThe comic book world is vast and layered, leaving room for many different, and valuable, interpretations.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To redraw content boundaries on a platform trusted in households with young kids, Foust says it gives parents an assignment. We have a couple of weeks to learn and then use parental controls, which he and Henson say are <a href=\"https:\/\/whatsondisneyplus.com\/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-upcoming-disney-parental-controls-update\/\">fairly adequate<\/a> on Disney Plus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis move creates a dilemma of having to more closely monitor Disney Plus,\u201d he said. \u201cSimilar to Netflix, Disney is becoming more of an antagonist than an ally.
