\/><\/div>\n<p class=\"subheading\">Britain\u2019s Conservative Party government has indicated that they will not take action to prevent the European Union from interfering with Northern Ireland while the Ukraine crisis rages on.<\/p>\n<p>Northern Ireland \u2014 an integral part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland \u2014 has been in political limbo since the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/explainers-53724381#:~:text=Despite%20signing%20up%20to%20the,Great%20Britain%20and%20Northern%20Ireland\">signing<\/a> of the Northern Ireland Protocol of Britain\u2019s Brexit deals, which granted the European Union several concessions including document checks between Great Britain and Northern Ireland and a requirement for goods in Northern Ireland to follow EU rules.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>The protocol has been hugely unpopular with Ulster unionists \u2014 those in Northern Ireland who wish to remain in the United Kingdom rather than join the Republic of Ireland \u2014 as it has divided Northern Ireland from the rest of the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Boris Johnson could trigger Article 16 of the Northern Ireland Protocol to pause the arrangements and pave the way for a renegotiated settlement, but government sources have suggested that he is \u201cunlikely\u201d to do so due to the entirely unrelated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2022\/03\/05\/british-journalists-hit-by-gunfire-in-ukraine-team-evacuated\/\">Russian invasion of Ukraine<\/a>, supposedly on grounds that resisting EU dominance in the province would increase conflict in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The optimum time for London to trigger Article 16 would be before Northern Ireland\u2019s regional elections in May, with a British government minister admitting that \u201cthe Protocol becomes much more difficult after May\u2019s elections because Jeffrey [Donaldson, the leader of Northern Ireland\u2019s biggest unionist party] may refuse to go back into Stormont [Northern Ireland\u2019s regional government] if it isn\u2019t ripped up entirely\u201d,\u00a0GB News <a conflict in Ukraine should not put a \u201cfreeze\u201d on triggering Article 16.<\/p>\n<p>Former Brexit minister and Conservative MP Steve Baker also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/politics\/2022\/03\/04\/dont-delay-triggering-article-16-ukraine-war-says-senior-brexiteer\/\">urged<\/a>\u00a0the government on Friday to trigger Article 16 \u201cimmediately\u201d, saying that it was \u201crisible\u201d to consider any further delay.<\/p>\n<p>Tensions over the Protocol bubbled over in January 2021 when the EU attempted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-55865539\">block<\/a> coronavirus vaccines from crossing the land border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland \u2014 despite so-called \u201chard border\u201d having been deemed unthinkable during Brexit deal negotiations \u2014 although they sharply U-turned after an international outcry, including from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2021\/12\/28\/eu-drafting-law-allowing-seizure-of-private-property-during-pandemic-emergencies-report\/\">Dublin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Protocol has also contributed to riots in Northern Ireland, with British loyalist community leaders saying that the Irish sea border created by the new Irish Sea border has become a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-northern-ireland-56664378\">major grievance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/B_HQ\">Ben Harris-Quinney<\/a>, chairman of the Bow Group conservative think tank, condemned the government\u2019s decision \u201cto\u00a0take their eye off the ball on key domestic issues because there is a war in Ukraine, in which we are rightly not involved\u201d as \u201cunacceptable\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMedia coverage may pull the attention of the public for a short time, but ultimately people are going to have very difficult questions about the cost of living, core goods, border security, and the integrity of this government\u201d, Harris-Quinney said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe mistake of Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and Syria was to enter into a dream world where the UK government thought its role was to hobnob in Davos and police the world, rather than govern in the interests of the British people\u201d, he continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the Bow Group <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BreitbartLondon\/status\/1344564010688131073\">warned when it was published<\/a>, the Northern Irish Protocol was never fit for purpose; it must be renegotiated to suit the needs of the Northern Irish people or Article 16 must be triggered.
