Which you would know if you have been paying attention. The Kremlin <a href=\"https:\/\/tass.com\/politics\/1407581\">declared<\/a> its intention to formally recognize the independence of two Russian-backed breakaway states in eastern Ukraine\u2019s Donbas region on February 21 and <a href=\"https:\/\/tass.com\/politics\/1409329\">sent<\/a> additional Russian troops into those territories 72 hours later. Moscow\u2019s military operation in Ukraine soon expanded beyond Donbas and remained ongoing at press time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/world-news\/looking-ahead-to-2022-russia-time-tested-relations-with-broadening-horizons-101640856901509.html\">New Delhi<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/english.news.cn\/20220205\/9530195cb5b54ab4999103a282bcc2de\/c.html\">Beijing<\/a>, two of Moscow\u2019s biggest political allies, have so far chosen not to publicly condemn the Kremlin\u2019s recent military action in Ukraine. This was evidenced on February 26 when India and China, along with the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.), abstained from a vote by the U.N. Security Council toward a resolution that would have demanded Russia immediately withdraw all of its armed forces from Ukraine. The resolution ultimately <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2022\/02\/1112802\">failed<\/a> to pass because Russia,\u00a0a permanent member of the U.N. The body\u2019s permanent members are: China, France, Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States,\u201d according to the U.N. noted.<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s state-run <em>Global Times<\/em> on March 4 offered the following explanation for why many people in India may have expressed support for Russian President Vladimir Putin this week:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The topics supporting Russia have attracted more Indian netizens especially after some media cited US officials as saying that the US is considering sanctions on Indian over the purchase of a missile defense system from Russia after India had abstained from a vote at the UN General Assembly condemning Russia over the conflict in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Some Indian netizens commented that Russia helps India when needed and therefore India should support Russia amid this tough time when \u201ceveryone is blindly hating our biggest ally.\u201d Some praised Russia President Vladimir Putin for fighting for his country and fighting for the destruction of the monopoly of US and Western countries.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>India <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/india-news\/india-russia-conclude-ak-203-deal-renew-10-yr-pact-for-military-cooperation-101638796549322.html\">renewed<\/a> an existing defense pact with Russia in December 2021 for an additional ten years. The deal included 28 agreements to cooperate across a variety of military sectors. Indian Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla announced the pact\u2019s signing on December 6, 2021. When announcing the development, Shringla <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/12\/07\/india-russia-broaden-ties-and-military-cooperation.html\">confirmed<\/a>\u00a0Russia had \u201cstarted delivering its long-range S-400 surface-to-air missile defense systems to India, based on a deal the two countries signed in 2018,\u201d CNBC reported at the time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSupplies have begun this month and will continue to happen,\u201d Shringla said, adding, \u201cIt is important to note that, whether it is us or Russia, we conduct an independent foreign policy and I don\u2019t think we need to look at our relationship in the light of any other relationship that is there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shringla referred to \u201cthe backdrop of US threats to impose secondary sanctions on the S-400 deal under the Countering America\u2019s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA),\u201d the <em>Hindustan Times<\/em> observed on December 6, 2021.<\/p>\n<p>CNBC described the\u00a0S-400 deal at the time as having the potential to \u201clead to sanctions from the United States under a 2017 law aimed at dissuading allies from purchasing Russian arms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The administration of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi led New Delhi to finalize its recent defense deals with Moscow despite the U.S. government\u2019s public disapproval of their S-400 agreement. Modi leads India\u2019s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The <em>Global Times<\/em> on March 4 suggested some opposition parties in India have accused Modi\u2019s administration of encouraging Hindu nationalist social media users to express pro-Russian and pro-Putin sentiments online amid Russia\u2019s latest military operation in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[S]ince the start of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, the Modi government has tried to keep a delicate balance, which is why it abstained at the UN meetings.
