Recent PR stunts can\u2019t erase their years of complicity in Communist China\u2019s genocide.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Western businesses have exited Russia in droves since the country\u2019s invasion of Ukraine, often citing humanitarian reasons as justification \u2014 yet many continue to maintain healthy relationships with China.<\/p>\n<p>Following Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine, American and European companies, particularly in the technology and entertainment sectors, announced they would be restricting service and sales in the country, with many suspending operations altogether. However, many of these companies not only operate in China, but have been linked to alleged human rights abuses and forced labor of the Uyghur Muslim population.<\/p>\n<p>Apple <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/03\/01\/apple-app-store-tim-cook-russia-ukraine\/\">announced<\/a>\u00a0Tuesday it would no longer sell its products in Russia and that certain services would be suspended in the country, expressing solidarity with \u201call of the people who are suffering\u201d from violence.<\/p>\n<p>The American tech giant is active in China, where it manufactures many of its devices and sells to the Chinese market. It has also been alleged that Apple is complicit in the ongoing repression of Uyghurs; an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theinformation.com\/articles\/seven-apple-suppliers-accused-of-using-forced-labor-from-xinjiang\">investigation<\/a>\u00a0by The Information in May 2021 found that seven Apple suppliers were accused of using forced labor from China\u2019s Xinjiang province.<\/p>\n<p>The company has\u00a0 previously <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/24\/apple-retail-groups-lobbying-chinese-slave-uyghur-labor-bill\/\">lobbied<\/a> on legislation aimed at curbing the use of forced labor in American supply chains. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/01\/31\/amazon-foxconn-whistleblower-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Amazon Whistleblower Who Was Imprisoned And Beaten In China Asks Company For Apology)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Apple reported $25 billion in revenue from the Greater China region in the first quarter of 2022 alone, almost as much as the company took in from the entirety of Europe, according to financial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/0000320193\/000032019322000007\/aapl-20211225.htm\">filings<\/a>. (AFP PHOTO \/ Philippe Lopez \/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Another Silicon Valley giant, cloud computing company Oracle, publicly <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/oracle\/status\/1499058658583490568\">announced<\/a> its exit from Russia Wednesday, citing \u201csupport of both the elected government of Ukraine and for the people of Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Oracle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oracle.com\/webfolder\/college-recruiting\/projects\/oracle-china.html\">maintains<\/a>\u00a0a presence in China, employing \u201chundreds of developers\u201d at \u201cthree centers in Oracle China\u201d and conducting research and development in the Shenzhen economic zone.<\/p>\n<p>The company has also been accused of aiding human rights abuses in China; The Intercept <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2021\/02\/18\/oracle-china-police-surveillance\/\">published<\/a>\u00a0an investigation in February 2021 purporting to detail an Oracle marketing plan to sell its software to Chinese authorities for use in a domestic surveillance campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Oracle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oracle.com\/interceptresponse\/\">characterized<\/a> The Intercept\u2019s reporting as \u201cdeeply at odds with reality\u201d and noted that the company has been reducing its presence in China over the past few years, claiming the outlet failed to provide any evidence that the plans were implemented. The company did not respond to the DCNF\u2019s request for comment. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/01\/07\/intel-xinjiang-china-forced-labor-uyghur\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Intel Bends Knee To China, Scrubs All Mentions Of Xinjiang Forced Labor From Letter)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>U.S. clothing company Nike, which manufactures many of its products in China, has also been <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/12\/30\/uighur-slave-labor-companies-brands-china\/\">linked<\/a>\u00a0to forced labor, and has lobbied on bills that seek to excise Xinjiang slave labor from U.S. supply chains. The company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/livecoverage\/russia-ukraine-latest-news-2022-03-03\/card\/nike-to-temporarily-close-stores-in-russia-6yFY1bfl4grJvqK3IxwI\">said<\/a>\u00a0it was closing stores in Russia<\/p>\n<p>The companies\u2019 inconsistencies in their stance toward China and Russia have raised eyebrows among lawmakers such as Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio and Indiana Republican Rep. Recent PR stunts can\u2019t erase their years of complicity in Communist China\u2019s genocide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Banks, who chairs the Republican Study Committee, <a href=\"https:\/\/rsc-banks.house.gov\/news\/press-releases\/rsc-introduces-countering-communist-china-act\">led<\/a>\u00a0the Countering Communist China Act which among other things restricts how certain American companies can do business with the Chinese state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChina is Russia times a thousand. Their economy is way bigger, their military might is superior at this point,\u201d Rubio said. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/12\/23\/intel-china-xinjiang-uyghur-forced-labor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: US Tech Giant Apologizes To China After Telling Suppliers To Avoid Products From Xinjiang)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s not forget there are American companies and their CEOs who are basically lobbyists for the Chinese government\u2019s position on a range of issues because they\u2019re desperate for market share over there, because they\u2019ve got factories and production over there,\u201d Rubio added.<\/p>\n<p>European companies with strong ties to China have also exited Russia, with German industrial conglomerate Siemens <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/livecoverage\/russia-ukraine-latest-news-2022-03-02\/card\/siemens-freezes-new-business-in-russia-vyvDY3YfEN0XwSdbcEX2\">announcing<\/a> it would be freezing business in Russia Wednesday and claiming to \u201cfully support all sanctions\u201d against the country.<\/p>\n<p>Siemens has <a href=\"https:\/\/new.siemens.com\/cn\/en\/company\/about\/siemens-in-china.html\">invested<\/a> heavily in China, claiming the country is now the company\u2019s \u201csecond largest overseas market\u201d and that the company has \u201c4,600 R&#038;D and engineering staff in Greater China, and 21 R&#038;D hubs, as well as nearly 11,000 active patents and patent applications\u201d in the country. The company has also allegedly <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/11\/29\/disney-simpsons-hong-kong-tiananmen-square-censorship-china\/\">censored<\/a>\u00a0content on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party, including a Simpsons\u2019 episode referencing the Tiananmen Square Massacre.<\/p>\n<p>Disney did not respond to the DCNF\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Video game titan Electronic Arts (EA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EASPORTSFIFA\/status\/1499057030857777154\">said<\/a>\u00a0it was removing the Russian national team and club teams from its popular FIFA and NHL franchises, claiming to stand in \u201csolidarity\u201d with the people of Ukraine and citing Russia\u2019s invasion as justification for the move.<\/p>\n<p>EA has not taken similar actions against China, and in fact <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ea.com\/news\/tour-the-ea-china-studio\">operates<\/a>\u00a0a game studio featuring 463 staff members. EA did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>American automakers <a href=\"https:\/\/media.ford.com\/content\/fordmedia\/fna\/us\/en\/news\/2022\/03\/01\/ford-russia-ukraine-statement.html\">Ford<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/gmauthority.com\/blog\/2022\/03\/gm-suspends-business-in-russia\/\">GM<\/a> both announced they were suspending operations in Russia Tuesday, though the companies cited a number of reasons including supply chain issues as justification for the decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs part of the global community, Ford is deeply concerned about the invasion of Ukraine and the resultant threats to peace and stability,\u201d Ford said in a statement. \u201cThe situation has compelled us to reassess our operations in Russia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neither company responded to the DCNF\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
