Listen to the full podcast:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>1) Texas Gov Calls For Investigations Into Transgender Procedures On Minors<br \/><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>The Topline: <\/b><span>Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) made headlines last week when he called on members of the public to report parents suspected of giving gender transition treatments to their children.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_350595\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-350595\" class=\"size-full wp-image-350595\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Brandon-BellGetty-Images-.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Brandon-BellGetty-Images-.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/dw-wp-production.imgix.net\/2022\/03\/Brandon-BellGetty-Images--300x169.jpeg 300w\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-350595\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brandon Bell\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><b>The Directive<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Governor Greg Abbott issu<\/span><span>ed a directive last week a<\/span><span>s part of a letter he <\/span><span>sent on Tuesday to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. He told the agency to \u201cconduct a prompt and thorough investigation\u201d of any instances involving minors receiving \u201celective procedures for gender transitioning.\u201d Abbott wrote that such treatments should be classified as \u201cchild abuse.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The governor also wrote that licensed professionals who work with children \u2014 people like teachers, nurses, and doctors \u2014 as well as \u201cmembers of the general public\u201d should report parents to state authorities if they believe they\u2019re putting their child through gender transition treatments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Abbott wants parents who are putting their child through gender transition treatment to be subject to child abuse charges. The governor also wrote that <\/span><span>anyone who fails to report this type of behavior is subject to criminal penalties, as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Response<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Within the state legislature, there are signs that lawmakers could support the measure, or others like it, in the future, but the governor also received harsh criticism from LGBT activists who argue that medical transition is necessar<\/span><span>y healthcare for children who experience gender dysphoria. This week, the ACLU filed a suit against the state in an attempt to block the new policy on behalf of one 16 year-old.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On Wednesday, a Texas judge sided with that 16 year-old\u2019s family, blocking them from investigation. The judge did not go as far as to stop the state from investigating other reports of children receiving gender transition treatments. However, she did set <\/span><span>a March 11th hearing to decide whether to temporarily block Abbott\u2019s order.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In February, <\/span><span>Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R), issued an opinion saying that existing state law already makes it child abuse to have minors put on puberty blockers or hormone therapy, or receive gender transition surgery. However, some county and district attorneys don\u2019t interpret the law that way, and they\u2019re<\/span><span> already saying they won\u2019t enforce Abbot\u2019s order.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Last year, the Texas legislature attempted to pass a bill that would have made <\/span><span>it a felony to provide those kinds of transgender treatments to minors, but the bill failed. That bill would have put these treatments in the same category as physical and sexual abuse of children.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That said, the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services investigated the issue in 2021 and concluded that gender <\/span><span>reassignment surgery is child abuse because it inflicts \u201cirreversible harm\u201d on children, who \u201clack the legal capacity to consent to surgical treatments.\u201d So the issue is far from settled in Texas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Elsewhere: <\/b><span>In Arkansas, it\u2019s illegal for doctors to prescribe hormones or perform gender reassignment surgery on minors. In the 2018 baker case, Jack Phillips told a same-sex couple that he wouldn\u2019t make a wedding cake for them because his religious convictions don\u2019t allow him to support same sex marriage. However, he did say he would sell them other goods instead.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Colorado <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/codes.findlaw.com\/co\/title-24-government-state\/co-rev-st-sect-24-34-601.html\"><span>law<\/span><\/a><span> holds that businesses can\u2019t discriminate against any customer based on a variety of factors, including sexual orientation. They also can\u2019t announce their intention to do so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I\u2019m 2018, the Supreme Court ultimately <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/2017\/16-111\"><span>ruled<\/span><\/a><span> on the side of the baker, essentially agreeing that Phillips received hostile treatment from the Colorado Civil Rights Commission because of his religious views, and that the commission had violated the Free Exercise Clause. However, the high court did not rule on freedom of speech in that case. That\u2019s the issue they\u2019re taking up now with this case.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The specific <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/qp\/21-00476qp.pdf\"><span>question<\/span><\/a><span> the Justices will weigh in on is \u201cwhether applying a public-accommodation law to compel an artist to speak or stay silent violates the free speech clause of the First Amendment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The Case<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Lorie Smith owns a web company called 303 Creative and says she is willing to serve all customers regardless of their sexual orientation. However, the company is planning to restrict wedding-related work to exclusively heterosexual marriages.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/DocketPDF\/21\/21-476\/193619\/20210924115918275_USSC%20Petition%20for%20Writ%20of%20Certiorari.pdf\"><span>petition<\/span><\/a><span> to the Supreme Court, her proposed statement reads, \u201cThese same religious convictions that motivate me also prevent me from creating websites promoting and celebrating ideas or messages that violate my beliefs. So I will not be able to create websites for same-sex marriages or any other marriage that is not between one man and one woman. Doing that would compromise my Christian witness and tell a story about marriage that contradicts God\u2019s true story of marriage \u2013 the very story He is calling me to promote.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Smith hasn\u2019t put that message up yet, and 303 Creative hasn\u2019t even started offering wedding websites yet, because Smith knows it would be breaking the law. This makes it harder to keep large military operations a secret, which has benefited Ukraine, and it also makes it almost impossible to cover up war crimes and other human rights abuses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>From the start, Putin\u2019s message to his people has been that Ukraine is a \u201cneo-nazi\u201d regime full of an oppressed people longing to be united with Russia. Due to social media, ordinary Russians have been able to see what\u2019s going on in Ukraine, and hear directly from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and actual victims of the invasion, which has allowed people to see how untrue Putin\u2019s message has been, creating an environment in Russia where there\u2019s a surprising level of pushback among the people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Negative Impact<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>There have been multiple examples of false reports getting millions of views and shares before they\u2019re corrected. For example, countless outlets reported on a group of 13 soldiers who\u2019d told a Russian warship to \u201cGo F\u2014 themselves\u201d before fighting to the death. The story was massive on social media, but according to Ukraine\u2019s Navy, it was untrue. The soldiers might have sent that message, but ended up surrendering and are all \u201calive and well.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There were also reports of a Ukrainian pilot known as the \u201cghost of Kyiv\u201d who\u2019d supposedly shot down half a dozen Russian jets in one day.
