That was our position during the migration crisis, when Hungary was the fifth or sixth safe country in the conflict, and we made it clear that we were under no obligation. It is again our position now, when Hungary is the first safe country in the Ukrainian conflict stemming from the Russian attack,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>This \u201celementary, human, Christian\u201d attitude towards ordinary Ukrainians has not, however, caused Hungary to soften its firm stance against the Ukrainian government\u2019s little-reported laws discriminating against minorities.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>These include not only a substantial Russian-speaking population but also some 150,000 ethnic Hungarians, cut off from Hungary proper by the shifting borders of the 20th century.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Hungary&#8217;s FM: Ukraine &#8220;stabbed Hungary in the back&#8221; over law that violates the rights of Hungarian minority<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/rmmIaJQM8J\">https:\/\/t.co\/rmmIaJQM8J<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/05DM6J0GV4\">pic.twitter.com\/05DM6J0GV4<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 About Hungary (@abouthungary) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/abouthungary\/status\/906185656107499520?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 8, 2017<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAt least 150,000 Hungarians live in Transcarpathia, and although the members of their community have never moved from their villages or towns, over the past one hundred years these Hungarians have had successive citizenship of five or six different states \u2013 and in some areas even of seven states,\u201d a spokesman for the Hungarian government\u2019s International Communications Office explained to Breitbart London on Friday, referring to the region of Ukraine where most of the Hungarian minority live.<\/p>\n<p>Transcarpathia is one of Ukraine\u2019s westernmost regions and shares a border with Hungary, and no significant hostilities between Russia and Ukraine are ongoing there as of the time of publication.<\/p>\n<p>These ethnic Hungarians, originally stranded on the wrong side of the border by the \u201cdismemberment of the Hungarian nation\u201d in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-52903721\">Treaty of Trianon<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 which deprived Hungary of more than two-thirds of its territory and cut it off from the sea after the First World War \u2013 have \u201calways remained with us in spirit,\u201d the spokesman said, highlighting the aid Budapest has extended to its extraterritorial compatriots as well as their non-Hungarian neighbours in recent years.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWhen we provided health care [in Transcarpathia], we provided it for everyone. When we provided education, we provided it not only for Hungarians, but also for Ukrainians. When we offered to build new roads to replace those which are now in such an appalling state of repair, those roads are and will also be used by Ukrainians,\u201d the spokesman said. \u201cWhat we have done has been unselfish, and we have adopted a pro-Ukraine position; but in return for this pro-Ukraine position previously the response has been anti-Hungarian Ukrainian policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt follows from this that, in response to the discriminatory laws affecting Hungarians in Transcarpathia, we\u2019re blocking cooperation with Ukraine at every European Union and NATO forum,\u201d they added, vowing that \u201cin all matters adversely affecting the Hungarian communities or the minority groups living in Ukraine, we [will], if needed, take issue with \u2013 or even take a stand against \u2013 the Ukrainian government.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>If adhered to, this pledge likely guarantees that Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky\u2019s high-profile appeals for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2022\/02\/28\/ukraine-president-calls-immediate-eu-membership-under-special-procedure\/\">a fast-track to EU membership<\/a> are dead on arrival unless the laws Hungary deems discriminatory are repealed, as\u00a0the accession of any new state to the bloc can be vetoed by any existing member-state.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Ukraine President Calls for \u2018Immediate\u2019 EU Membership Under \u2018Special Procedure\u2019<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/IfL1nLgskO\">https:\/\/t.co\/IfL1nLgskO<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Breitbart London (@BreitbartLondon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BreitbartLondon\/status\/1498342230309879811?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 28, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Clashes between the Hungarian and Ukrainian governments have centred primarily on the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/2215f81c9f86412c888f50a581ff9826\">nationalist language laws<\/a> adopted by Kyiv in the wake of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-26079957\">Euromaidan revolution<\/a> of 2014, aimed at curtailing the use of languages other than Ukrainian in official settings including schools \u2013 a situation Hungarian foreign minister P\u00e9ter Szijj\u00e1rt\u00f3 described as <a href=\"https:\/\/abouthungary.hu\/news-in-brief\/hungarys-foreign-minister-personally-travels-to-ukraine-to-discuss-the-countrys-new-education-law\">\u201coutrageous and unacceptable\u201d<\/a>\u00a0in 2017.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Minister\u00a0Szijj\u00e1rt\u00f3 was also angered by\u00a0Ukrainian security service commandos conducting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abouthungary.hu\/news-in-brief\/fm-summons-ukrainian-ambassador-following-raids-of-ethnic-hungarian-institutions-in-transcarpathia\">raids on Hungarian cultural institutions<\/a>\u00a0for alleged connections to \u201cseparatism,\u201d summoning the Ukrainian ambassador in December 2020 and accusing Kyiv of\u00a0\u201ccontinuously intimidat[ing] and keep[ing] an ethnic minority of a NATO member\u2026 under pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Later that same month, Szijj\u00e1rt\u00f3 accused the Ukrainian authorities of resorting to <a href=\"https:\/\/abouthungary.hu\/news-in-brief\/fm-ukraine-is-using-the-darkest-methods-to-intimidate-citizens\">\u201cthe darkest methods reminiscent of the Soviet era\u201d<\/a> following reports they were investigating councillors in a Transcarpathian village on suspicion of treason for singing the Hungarian national anthem.<\/p>\n<p>There are reports that <a href=\"https:\/\/abouthungary.hu\/news-in-brief\/giant-anti-hungarian-posters-appear-in-several-transcarpathian-settlements-in-ukraine\">Russian agents<\/a> may be trying to exacerbate the dispute between the two countries, with Russia\u2019s\u00a0Federal Security Service (FSB) accused of orchestrating an anti-Hungarian billboard campaign in Transcarpathia to further inflame tensions in 2018, for example.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">July 11. Polish minority of around 140,000 \u2014 a population significantly reduced by the savage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/05\/21\/lens\/poland-ukraine-volhynia-massacre.html\">Wo\u0142y\u0144 (Volyn) massacres<\/a> of 50,000-100,000 ethnic Poles by Ukrainian nationalist guerrillas and local peasants during the Second World War \u2014 and this population has also been impacted by Kyiv\u2019s language laws.<\/p>\n<p>The Polish government, while close to\u00a0Orb\u00e1n\u2019s government on most issues, has adopted a different stance on the Ukrainian crisis, however, backing Kyiv\u2019s efforts to secure EU membership and insisting that \u201cthe free world\u201d must <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2022\/02\/24\/prime-minister-of-poland-free-world-has-to-stop-putin\/\">stop Russian leader Vladimir Putin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Orb\u00e1n, who has said that his primary goal is to avoid being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2022\/02\/24\/hungarian-govt-on-ukraine-we-must-not-let-the-left-drag-hungary-into-this-war\/\">\u201cdragged\u201d<\/a>\u00a0into a wider conflict, has historically taken a much less hostile posture towards Russia, having <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2022\/02\/02\/hungarys-viktor-orban-buys-up-natural-gas-in-moscow-declares-sanctions-doomed-to-failure\/\">negotiated a Russian gas deal<\/a> to keep Hungarian energy prices low and expressed opposition to Russian sanctions shortly before the invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Budapest has <a href=\"https:\/\/abouthungary.hu\/news-in-brief\/fm-hungary-has-never-expressed-any-objection-to-sanctions-against-russia\">denied<\/a> accusations that Hungary has held up EU sanctions on Russia since its offensive began, however, insisting that it has \u201cnever expressed any objection to sanctions \u2026 neither have we blocked sanctions or any related proposals\u201d on areas such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2022\/03\/02\/sanctions-loophole-swift-exemption-europe-lets-itself-pay-for-russian-gas\/\">SWIFT<\/a>, dismissing reports to the contrary as \u201cfake
