And I would vote to ensure that if the judiciary is reviewing an abortion law that they follow the Constitution, it\u2019s quite clear. That Alabama case is in point did not include those exceptions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut, Dr. Oz, that\u2019s currently being debated at the Supreme Court,\u201d Cain said. \u201cSo, setting aside the exceptions, which I appreciate, what about, what is your position as both a doctor and a senatorial candidate on when life begins? When should we draw the line when abortion is is legal?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Oz responded by emphasizing that \u201cas a doctor,\u201d he appreciates \u201cthe sanctity of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd for that reason, I\u2019m strongly pro-life with the three exceptions I\u2019ve mentioned,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s how I would vote.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd when does that life begin?\u201d Cain pressed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know, I get it. If I\u2019m pro-life, then that\u2019s a decision that comes back to the sanctity of when you think life does begin,\u201d Dr. Oz responded. \u201cAnd I believe it begins when you\u2019re in the mother\u2019s womb.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you\u2019re in the mother\u2019s womb?\u201d Cain asked. \u201cBut that carries you all the way up to nine months of pregnancy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, of course not,\u201d Oz said \u201cLife\u2019s already started when you\u2019re in your mother\u2019s womb. It\u2019s a rathole to get trapped into different ways of talking about it. We need as a nation to make sure the Constitution is appropriately followed. And people like me and you may be in the same camp, who are pro-life, have our feelings respected. And this is something that should not be taken away from us by judiciary legislating from the bench.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though Oz discusses how \u201cstate legislatures nationwide have taken action to protect the most vulnerable among us\u200b\u201d in his Washington Examiner op-ed \u2014 and hits at Democrats attacking these laws \u2014 the senatorial candidate said in 2019 he was \u201creally worried\u201d about a pro-life law pushed by Alabama Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/10\/29\/us\/alabama-abortion-ban.html\">was blocked<\/a> by a federal judge after Republican Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey signed it into law, was one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/alabama-abortion-law-passed-alabama-passes-near-total-abortion-ban-with-no-exceptions-for-rape-or-incest-2019-05-14\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">most restrictive abortion laws<\/a>\u00a0in the country at the time and banned almost all abortions with no exceptions for rape or incest, though it would make exception if the mother\u2019s health was in serious danger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really worried about it,\u201d he told The Breakfast Club at the time. \u201cI\u2019ll tell you, I\u2019ve taken care of a lot of women who\u2019ve had issues around childbirth. The problem with the law as it stands now, and I think they\u2019ll always really only pass to generate a Supreme Court challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH:<\/strong><\/p>\n[embedded content]\n<p>\u201cBut most women don\u2019t know they\u2019re pregnant, it\u2019s only, it\u2019s two weeks past your last period is when you have to decide by,\u201d he continued. \u201cWell, I have people on the show all the time who never know they were pregnant even when they were delivering. 50% of women don\u2019t know they\u2019re pregnant when they\u2019re pregnant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In that same Breakfast Club interview, Oz not only defended <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> as a measure that prevents coat hanger abortions, he also said that he did not \u201cwant to interfere\u201d with a woman\u2019s ability to abort her baby, accused pro-lifers of \u201cpicking fights,\u201d and suggested that pro-life laws would make businesses leave red states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt a personal level, I wouldn\u2019t want anyone in my family to have an abortion,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u00a0told my kids this, I mean I love the lives that they\u2019re creating so much that I personally wouldn\u2019t want it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I don\u2019t want to interfere with everyone else\u2019s stuff because it\u2019s hard enough getting through life as it is,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>Oz explained that, as a physician, he thinks that if the litmus test for abortion must be that the baby\u2019s heart is beating, \u201cthen really make it the heart beating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t make some surrogate version of it when you know cells are, you know, have electrical path,\u201d he said at the time. \u201cThat\u2019s not what the average person thinks. The average person is envisioning a little acorn heart beating in there.
