On Thursday, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.taipeitimes.com\/News\/front\/archives\/2022\/03\/04\/2003774155\"><span>awarded<\/span><\/a><span> Pompeo the Order of the Brilliant Star for his efforts to bring the U.S. and Taiwan closer.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>At the award ceremony, Pompeo said it was \u201csimple, right, and proper\u201d for the U.S. to end restrictions on diplomatic exchanges with Taiwan. He said Taiwan\u2019s allies should remain firmly committed to protecting the island\u2019s democratic freedoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIf any of us were mistaken or complacent about the risk to that freedom, I think we need only watch what\u2019s taking place in Europe today to see that this continues to demand deep, concerted, focus[ed] leadership from those of us who cherish freedom,\u201d Pompeo said, referring to Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI think these days call for the simple reminder that it is not provocative to say that one demands freedom,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>This might have been intended as a rebuke to China\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/02\/26\/china-calls-us-warship-in-sensitive-taiwan-strait-a-provocation\/\"><span>constant complaints<\/span><\/a><span> that U.S. warship transits through the Strait of Taiwan are \u201cprovocative.\u201d A U.S. Navy destroyer passed through the Strait on Saturday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On Thursday night, Pompeo used Twitter to call for U.S. diplomatic recognition of Taiwan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It is my view that the U.S. government should immediately take necessary, and long-overdue, steps to do the right and obvious thing, that is to offer the Republic of China (Taiwan) America\u2019s diplomatic recognition as a free and sovereign country.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Mike Pompeo (@mikepompeo) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mikepompeo\/status\/1499570460828315651?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 4, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>The United States <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ait.org.tw\/our-relationship\/policy-history\/us-taiwan-relations\/\"><span>switched<\/span><\/a><span> its diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to the People\u2019s Republic of China in 1979, recognizing Beijing as the sole legal government of China, while remaining committed to preserving Taiwan\u2019s autonomy and giving it the means to defend itself. As a matter of longstanding policy, the U.S. \u201copposes unilateral changes to the status quo by either side, and encourages both sides to engage in constructive dialogue on the basis of dignity and respect.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Pompeo said diplomatic recognition would not be a step toward changing the status quo, but rather a recognition of a truth that has persisted for decades.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>\u201cThis isn\u2019t about Taiwan\u2019s future independence, it\u2019s about recognizing an unmistakable already existent reality. That reality is, as many of your past and present leaders have made clear, there\u2019s no need for Taiwan to declare independence because it\u2019s already an independent country,\u201d he argued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIts name is the Republic of China (Taiwan). The people and government of the United States should simply recognize this political, diplomatic and sovereignty reality. The Taiwanese people deserve the world\u2019s respect for a free, democratic and sovereign country,\u201d Pompeo wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Pompeo\u2019s visit to Taiwan did not go over well in Beijing. On Friday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmprc.gov.cn\/mfa_eng\/xwfw_665399\/s2510_665401\/2511_665403\/202203\/t20220304_10648111.html\"><span>dismissed<\/span><\/a><span> Pompeo as \u201ca former politician with bankrupt credibility\u201d and said, \u201chis lunatic remarks will lead nowhere.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>China\u2019s state-run <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globaltimes.cn\/page\/202203\/1253902.shtml\"><i><span>Global Times<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span>punched out a berserk editorial on Friday morning that began by taunting Taiwan over a recent string of power outages, then hectored the island\u2019s governing DPP party for welcoming \u201cthe worst secretary of state in history\u201d with \u201cdrums and gongs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cTsai racked her brains, prepared a ceremony to award him a special honor and planned to livestream it on the internet. She has tried to create the momentum for the awarding ceremony on social media platforms, but an unexpected power blackout made her post overwhelmed by netizens\u2019 anger, forcing her to cancel the live broadcast. Pompeo was also caught up in traffic confusion caused by the outage,\u201d the <\/span><i><span>Global Times <\/span><\/i><span>chortled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The bulk of the rambling editorial used Pompeo\u2019s visit and the blackouts to argue that Taiwan\u2019s government puts too much effort into building futile defenses against Chinese invasion, at the expense of the Taiwanese people:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>Taiwan\u2019s livelihood guarantee is like a tattered tent, through which the rain and wind drive at will. The fundamental reason is that the DPP authority doesn\u2019t take this matter seriously. It is frantically draining the savings of the Taiwan residents accumulated over the past 30 to 40 years. The \u201cdefense budget\u201d is twice the \u201ceconomic expenditure\u201d in the DPP authority\u2019s budget of this year. The so-called international friendship the DPP authority is trying to win costs the island dearly.
