One of the most disturbing episodes in that relationship occurred when Gates stepped outside the realm of personal computers to help the Chinese improve their nuclear reactors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In 2011 \u2014 after a decade of alternately predicting China would never be able to police the Internet and helping Communist officials do exactly that \u2014 a company called TerraPower that was cofounded by Gates began working with the Chinese National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) on a \u201cnext-generation\u201d reactor.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>The project was ostensibly civilian in nature, although Schweizer notes CNNC also works for the Chinese military \u2014 and the molten salt reactors TerraPower developed just happen to be \u201cincredibly effective at propelling ships at sea, including military vessels.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20105778\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20105778\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/AP22027151993369.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1280\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bill Gates, Chairman of TerraPower, speaks at a U.S. Trade and Investment Cooperation Conference on September 22, 2015, in Seattle. (AP Photo\/Elaine Thompson)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><i><span>Red-Handed <\/span><\/i><span>notes the People\u2019s Liberation Army (PLA) was already working on techniques for installing this type of reactor on its aircraft carriers when Gates\u2019 TerraPower teamed up with CNNC.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>The partnership ended in 2018 when \u201cpolicy changes\u201d under the Trump administration \u201cmade the project difficult to achieve.\u201d CNNC was later included on a list of Chinese companies linked to the PLA, which would seem to have scuttled its partnership with Gates \u2014 although he evidently hopes to continue working on reactor projects with other Chinese companies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe TerraPower thing, that was a setback, but there are ways to come back and engage China in a fairly deep way later in the project,\u201d Gates <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chinadaily.com.cn\/a\/201911\/23\/WS5dd88706a310cf3e35579711.html\"><span>told<\/span><\/a><span> Chinese state media in 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cChina has a lot to contribute,\u201d he gushed in that interview. \u201cChina is building about 40 percent of all the nuclear builds in the world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Gates claimed his sole interest in helping China build advanced nuclear reactors was fighting climate change by helping countries like China and India build \u201czero-emission\u201d power grids.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSo to the degree we\u2019re allowed, we\u2019re going to be very aggressive about building Chinese partnerships. If we don\u2019t have cooperation, then things like climate change will be much more difficult to solve,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>In December 2021, the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Inc. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/japan-help-build-bill-gates-high-tech-nuclear-reactor-wyoming-yomiuri-2022-01-01\/\"><span>announced<\/span><\/a><span> a partnership with TerraPower to build the same kind of nuclear plant Gates wanted to build with CNNC. (AP Photo\/Elaine Thompson)<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>A 2020 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/asiatimes.com\/2020\/02\/molten-salt-and-traveling-wave-nuclear-reactors\/\"><i><span>Asia Times<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span>report on the state of the art in reactor technology pointed out that American firms were leaders in developing molten salt reactors (MSR), but only China has plans to actually <\/span><i><span>build <\/span><\/i><span>them, and they are energetic plans indeed. China\u2019s MSR program is headed by Jiang Mianheng, son of former president Jiang Zemin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Molten salt reactors, as the name implies, use a superheated salt solution to transfer energy from the reactor core to external power feeds. In essence, the reactor shoots out liquified salt, bubbling along at roughly 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, and useful energy is siphoned from that incredibly hot mixture, which flows back into the reactor for another nuclear toasting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Some of the keen interest in MSRs is due to their theoretically high degree of inherent safety. If any of the molten salt should ever leak out of the system, it immediately cools and becomes solid, trapping radioactive material safely inside. The scientists who laid the theoretical groundwork for the reactors in the 1940s imagined them powering <\/span><i><span>airplanes. <\/span><\/i><span>Modern engineers have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2012\/apr\/02\/us-plans-nuclear-drones\"><span>proposed<\/span><\/a><span> nuclear-powered drones that would use miniature reactors to stay aloft for months on end.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Small reactors with safe, sealed systems like MSRs could also lead to an innovation known as the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.neimagazine.com\/news\/newschina-to-develop-travelling-wave-reactor-5937360\"><span>traveling wave reactor<\/span><\/a><span>,\u201d another specialty of Gates\u2019 TerraPower \u2014 and of his erstwhile PLA-linked partner, CNNC.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Traveling wave reactors create their own fuel in a kind of rolling avalanche of nuclear power. They would only require external refueling once every decade or two, and they burn up a great deal of their own waste.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>These are features of clear interest to clean energy proponents, to be sure, but also strong selling points for military planners developing weapons platforms that could be deployed at sea, in the air, or in space for long periods of time.
