Some of the vigorously anti-Russian Chechens are reportedly battle-hardened jihadi fighters from the Syrian civil war.<\/p>\n<p><span>Kadyrov, an eccentric strongman and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/russias-chechen-leader-says-his-forces-deployed-ukraine-2022-02-26\/\"><span>close ally<\/span><\/a><span> of Russian leader Vladimir Putin who has cheerfully described himself as \u201cPutin\u2019s foot soldier,\u201d announced Saturday his fighters had been dispatched to assist the Russian invasion of Ukraine and had already seen action.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<div id=\"attachment_15456332\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/media.breitbart.com\/media\/2021\/01\/wi\/ap\/20\/russia-chechnya-raid-friday-10-2019-file-photo-chechnya-regional-leader-ramzan-kadyrov-speaks-mee.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15456332 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/russia-chechnya-raid-friday-10-2019-file-photo-chechnya-regional-leader-ramzan-kadyrov-speaks-mee-1024x699-1.jpg\" alt=\"The Associated Press\" width=\"1024\" height=\"699\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>In this Friday, May 10, 2019 file photo, Chechnya\u2019s Ramzan Kadyrov speaks during a meeting in Grozny, Russia. (AP Photo\/Musa Sadulayev)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Russian state television <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2022\/2\/26\/putins-chechen-ally-says-forces-deployed-ukraine-to-back-russia\"><span>broadcast<\/span><\/a><span> images<\/span><span>\u00a0that it claimed showed at least 12,000 Chechen fighters assembled in the regional capital of Grozny, supposedly mustering for their march to Ukraine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Kadyrov said Putin \u201ctook the right decision\u201d to attack Ukraine, and \u201cwe will carry out his orders under any circumstances.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAs of today, as of this minute, we do not have one single casualty, or wounded, not a single man has even had a runny nose,\u201d he boasted Saturday, although he <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/putin-ally-kadyrov-admits-troop-losses-calls-new-russia-tactics-2022-3\"><span>admitted<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0Tuesday that at least two of his troops had been killed, with \u201csix more injured to various degrees.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>Ukrainian media, with some backing from outside observers, claimed an entire column of Chechen armor was wiped out:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I&#8217;ve been receiving messages from Chechen sources that after huge losses of Kadyrov&#8217;s personal &#8220;army&#8221; (in particular: @ 70 of them were reported charred alive after a single Bayraktar strike), most of the rest returned across the border. Scenes like this corroborate such reports. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/hPLPEz8V9g\">https:\/\/t.co\/hPLPEz8V9g<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Christo Grozev (@christogrozev) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/christogrozev\/status\/1497941632209108992?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 27, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Ukraine\u2019s Armed Forces on Saturday <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/international\/article-699032\"><span>claimed<\/span><\/a><span> Chechen Gen. Magomed Tushayev of the 141st Motorized Regiment of the Chechen National Guard was killed northwest of Kyiv. (JOHANNA GERON\/POOL\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council Secretary Oleksiy Danilov <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/03\/01\/ukraine-says-it-has-neutralized-chechen-zelensky-hit-squad\/\"><span>claimed<\/span><\/a><span> on Tuesday that two \u201celite Chechen death squads\u201d sent to assassinate Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had been \u201cneutralized\u201d using intelligence provided by Ukraine sympathizers inside Russia\u2019s FSB security service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThey were divided in two groups, we were tracking them. One group was handled near Hostomel, the other one is in our sights,\u201d Danilov said.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>\u201cWe won\u2019t give up our president, our country. This is our land, be gone,\u201d he told the Chechens and their Russian masters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>These developments spurred interest among \u201cyoung Chechen men already preparing to head to fight for Ukraine,\u201d as <\/span><span>Vice News<\/span><span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/5dgjn8\/chechnya-fighters-ukraine-russia-ramzan-kadyrov\">alleged<\/a>\u00a0Wednesday:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cKadyrovtsy are in Ukraine fighting alongside the Russians, that makes it every Chechen man\u2019s responsibility to confront the enemies of Chechnya and our faith,\u201d according to Ramzan, a former jihadist fighter in Syria from Chechnya quietly living in exile in Turkey, speaking under a pseudonym. \u201cKadyrov and his clan control the [Russian-loyal security services] and hunt his political opponents in Russia, in Chechnya, and in Europe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBut now they are in Ukraine for Putin and we can hunt them again,\u201d he said. \u201cWe know these men [sent to kill Zelenskyy] who work for Putin\u2019s dog [Kadyrov].\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;Now they are in Ukraine for Putin and we can hunt them again.&#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/h5vMhSov2j\">https:\/\/t.co\/h5vMhSov2j<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 VICE News (@VICENews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VICENews\/status\/1499119905945313287?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 2, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>Vice News estimated at least a few hundred Chechens opposed to Kadyrov\u2019s \u201cincreasingly brutal rule\u201d were ready to answer Ukraine\u2019s call for foreign volunteers, and claimed there could be thousands \u2013 a rush to the front likely to be slowed by Ukraine\u2019s struggle to vet aspiring foreign legionnaires for criminal and terrorist connections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Terrorism might be a sticking point for Ukraine\u2019s effort to recruit Chechens with military experience, as many of them fought in Syria under the banner of jihadi groups, including the Islamic State. In fact, one of the top ISIS military commanders was a half-Chechen veteran of Georgia\u2019s special forces named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2014\/07\/03\/Chechen-Jihadist-Military-Commander-is-Being-Branded-as-the-New-Face-of-ISIS\/\">Abu Omar al-Shishani<\/a>. His career in ISIS military leadership was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/news\/islamic-state-war-minister-omar-the-chechen-likely-killed-in-u-s-airstrike\/\"><span>evidently ended<\/span><\/a><span> by a U.S. drone strike in 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Vice News noted that some experienced Chechen fighters eager to leave Syria so they can battle Kadyrov\u2019s forces in Ukraine are stuck in Syria because Turkey is reluctant to let them pass through its borders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of guys inside Idlib who would rather be in Ukraine than Syria, but they are not sure if the Turks will let them pass the border on their way,\u201d said a Syrian named Abu Marwan who claims to have fought alongside the Chechens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThey are unsure if they will be arrested. Most of the guys who are left did not join ISIS, but they did come to fight jihad and have associations. They\u2019re asking the Turks for permission to move,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of guys that would be fine to let leave, they\u2019re dangerous if you\u2019re Russian or a Kadyrov fighter, but they\u2019re Chechens focused on Chechen issues not international jihadist dogma. But there are also a handful anyone would want to arrest in transit,\u201d an unnamed regional security official told Vice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Other members of the Chechen diaspora would have less trouble getting to Ukraine, although some might lack the military experience the Ukrainian government is looking for. Chechens living in Europe and Turkey told Vice they felt a strong imperative to get revenge against \u201cPutin and his dog\u201d Kadyrov for driving their families out of Chechnya.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI am going to Ukraine this weekend, inshallah. Each night, all Chechen people pray for the chance to defeat Russia.
