Senate Minority Leader \u00a0<\/span><span class=\"r-18u37iz\">@LeaderBookFL <\/span>&#038; Democratic Rep. <span class=\"r-18u37iz\">@AnnaForFlorida <\/span>are with them, among other lawmakers.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Protesters are gathering inside the Capitol Rotunda in opposition to the \u201cDon\u2019t Say Gay\u201d bill. <\/p>\n<p>Senate Minority Leader <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LeaderBookFL?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@LeaderBookFL<\/a> &#038; Democratic Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AnnaForFlorida?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@AnnaForFlorida<\/a> are with them, among other lawmakers. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/aBFjdMxUmo\">pic.twitter.com\/aBFjdMxUmo<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Jason Delgado (@byJasonDelgado) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/byJasonDelgado\/status\/1499449279106195458?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 3, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Critics of the proposal have branded it the \u201c\u2018Don\u2019t Say Gay\u2019 bill,\u201d claiming it would harm LGBT students by preventing discussion, making them feel unwelcome, and possibly creating an environment of harm at home.<\/p>\n<p>But as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/02\/24\/1082969036\/florida-house-passes-controversial-measure-dubbed-the-dont-say-gay-bill-by-criti\">pointed<\/a> out by NPR, what the bill actually does is prohibit instruction on LGBTQ topics for kindergarten through third-graders, provides parents more transparency by requiring schools to notify them of any change in mental, physical, or emotional well being, and allows schools to opt-out of that if there is a \u201creasonable\u201d fear that notifying a parent would result in abuse:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>The legislation prohibits any instruction about sexuality or gender between kindergarten and third grade \u201cor in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It would also guarantee parents access to their children\u2019s education and health records and require that schools notify parents \u201cif there is a change in the student\u2019s services or monitoring related to the student\u2019s mental, emotional, or physical health or well-being and the school\u2019s ability to provide a safe and supportive learning environment for the student.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Schools could withhold information from parents if they believed that disclosing it could result in abuse, abandonment or neglect.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Still, the far-left, including President Joe Biden, have declared the bill to be \u201chateful\u201d and homophobic \u2014 and many wrongly believe that it prevents the word \u201cgay\u201d from even being mentioned in any public school setting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis legislation is about respecting the rights of parents and protecting kids,\u201d Jon Schweppe, a director at the American Principles Project, told The Daily Wire. \u201cParents shouldn\u2019t have to fear sending their kids to public school in America, but they do because woke ideologues have become obsessed with teaching kids as young as five that they can change their gender.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis bill doesn\u2019t do anything the Left claims \u2014 kids can talk about their families, even if they\u2019re LGBT. Classroom discussions can still take place about LGBT history,\u201d Schweppe said. \u201cBut this bill tries to provide boundaries, prevent unwanted indoctrination, and give parents more control over the upbringing of their kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the protest Thursday, people shouted vulgarities about DeSantis, who supports the bill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018F*ck DeSantis\u2019 is their latest rallying cry,\u201d Delgado reported at one point.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">They\u2019re growing in numbers. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cF*ck DeSantis\u201d is their latest rallying cry. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/YYhI6CwE0i\">pic.twitter.com\/YYhI6CwE0i<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Jason Delgado (@byJasonDelgado) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/byJasonDelgado\/status\/1499450415783493642?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 3, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Schweppe argues that the vulgarities from the protesters only prove why the bill is necessary in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe vulgarity and the nastiness of the school protests, egged on by woke teachers and school administrators, really only proves the need for the bill,\u201d Schweppe said.<\/p>\n<p>The bill passed both Florida\u2019s House last week and is expected to be voted on by the Senate this week.
